I have a friend who has connections with the basketball program in Stillwater. Fwiw ... He claims there was a meeting last weekend between Boone and Ford and a buyout is currently being arranged. The part that has me a little skeptical of this information being credible is the list I was given for replacements Marshall, Smart, Buzz, and Gottlieb. Of course if you're replacing the 3rd best coach in your programs history then your list probably has to include those names, well all except the last one.

I actually believe Gottlieb will get a chance at OSU if Ford is out because of the Sutton connection. That will carry some weight with T Boone.

I don't think any of those names are crazy for osu.

I would be estatic if they brought in gottlieb

If OSU was smart they would go get some veteran coach and not take another shot on an "up and comer" type of guy....

Go get Tubby Smith (Oklahoma connection), Larry Eustachy (currently at Colorado State), Doc Sadler (Eddie Sutton coaching tree, currently head coach at Southern Miss), Bob Hoffman... or someone like that.

OU followed this path with Lon Kruger and it worked out really well for OU.

I would want Greg Marshall. He says "no" to a lot of programs. Buzz Williams is reportedly unhappy a Virginia Tech. I don't want Gottlieb as I think a guy should be a coach at some level first.

Buzz would be great, but I get the feeling he's a guy looking for a reason to be unhappy. Keeps jumping ship when he has a good thing going.

Has Doug Gottlieb coached anywhere?

I think he would be a descent coach but I agree he needs a few years learning the trade before he gets a job like OSU. Even Danny Manning had to work some years on the KU staff before he got a shot at Tulsa.

Fred Hoiberg and Steve Kerr don't think you need to coach anywhere first. Not saying Gottlieb will be a good coach but you either get it or you don't.

Gottlieb isn't giving up his ESPN gig to be an assistant coach somewhere. OSU would get his attention.

is the buyout really 9.6 million?

yeah, it wasn't so bad until 2009, when they tacked on 4 more years to make sure he would be there for a 10 more years after the initial one...:facepalm

ya know, that magical 2009 initial season where he took Sutton's players, got 4th in the big 12 with a 23-12 (9-7) record and won 1 game in the NCAA tourney... They were back!

They have long tenures in the NBA learning more about the game and observing coaching. Hobert was also in Management in the NBA. I am not sure four years of college is enough experience but who knows and it is a valid point that former NBA players do go straight into head coaching jobs.

At first I thought gottlieb would be a huge mistake but the guy knows basketball. I think his dad is some sort of big time high school coach or aau coach in California so he's got that connection. Name recognition. And like hoiberg you can expect a bunch off transfers to come in. Mainly also bc that's what Sutton did during that time. Greg Marshall on the other hand is someone you have to go after.

One thing is for certain. Ford has to go

His dad was a good coach. Good HS background, as well as, I believe he was an assistant in college early in his career. Unfortuntely, he died last year.

Doug's dad ran Branch west out of Cali. Big AAU program. I meet him a handful of times. Very knowledgeable. I think doug needs ast time first before taking over a big 12 school. Hurleys are more well know, and they have started a lot lower than the Big 12.

Hurley is the exact same thing as Ford. If they're going to hire a mid major unproven guy then why not keep Ford? You don't spend 9-11 million dollars to bring in Doug Gottlieb.

I think Gottlieb would be a fantastic hire. He can keep on Dickey, or find someoene similar, to help out with some of the non-intuitive parts of running a D1 program. But he's clearly a very smart guy and a great basketball mind.
