My best friend trains the son of Assistant Coach Lew Hill in Norman and talks to Hill any time he comes into his facility. Hill told him Buddy Hield was likely done for the year, including the Big 12 Tournament and the NCAA Tourney if they do make it. He said they told Buddy he could play again this year to keep his spirits up at the time, though it is very unlikely.

But, on a positive note, he said that Hill is very confident that somebody will step up in a big way in place of Hield and that they would win enough games to advance to the NCAA Tourney.

It's much better that he be done for the year and come back 100% next year than he try to come back too early.

he could come back early re break that bone .... then fix it again and he will still be fine next season .. 7 months away

True, but there is no guarantee that a second break wouldn't be worse than the first. I just belong to the 'better to be safe than sorry' school of philosophy. I'm sure that if he does come back this season, the medical staff will have checked and double checked everything.

100% agree. We're not making a final four run this year or anything like that. We just need to make sure he's good to go for next year and beyond.

Why would OU would not say this? To make Buddy feel better? Seems very junior highish.

That is what I was thinking too. Wouldn't a coach and staff have the most trust and respect of their players by simply being honest. Be honest in evaluations, potential for playing time, injuries, etc. etc. It is actually harder to do than being the good guy that never says the tough thing

Agree.

As a HS Track coach we deal with injuries a lot. Theres no reason to sugar coat on our level. So Im not sure why at OU's level they would.

4-6 weeks essentially is anywhere from plays in the postseason to out for the year (assuming he doesn't play the sixth week, it would seem unlikely that we'd be around for the Sweet 16 in the seventh). The range doesn't imply that his return in each of those weeks is equal.

My thoughts exactly. I also wonder why an OU assistant would reveal the "cover up" to someone, knowing full well that Buddy would be unhappy when he learned the truth? The mere fact that it was posted here proves my point.

I don't question the OP on this thread. But something about this story doesn't add up.

Having him playing out there injured isn't just a injury risk, it also would make him a liability on the court. We want Buddy to be a pogo stick out there, not hesitant.

My guess is the real story is that the assistant thinks he won't be back even though there is a small chance. I am guessing the rest is just us being the 3rd or 4th person in the game of telephone.

agreed

We'll all just have to say a little prayer that Buddy has Blake's recuperative powers.

They may have told him there is a chance but not a sure thing.

He is such a positive kid that to him it meant he would come back for sure for the Big 12 and NCAA Tournaments.

It's hard to know but he'll do what he can to get back, that's for sure.

he said on twitter that he will only be out 3 weeks

I've learned over the years that you can't really trust what a player says about their recovery time. Sometimes it is faster, sometimes it is slower. Still, it is probably a good sign that he thinks he will be back in 3 weeks.

It is foolish to believe that anyone has better information than Buddy and his surgeon. That being said there are wide variations in how quickly individuals recover from injuries. It is also foolish to discount the impact a positive attitude and determination has on a recovery time.

Nevertheless, it will be what it will be.

I doubt he needs a surgeon for a bone fracture. That's something you can pretty much only have heal over time. I hope we get to see Buddy in the post season but that's about all we can hope for. Maybe if it's not that bad he can come back the last game of the regular season. But that's probably overly optimistic.
