Gary Simon

More on this topic. Stoops even credits Kruger for signing Gary Simon.

Looks like Simon is not the only basketball star the football program signed to a LOI. Stoops compares Charles Tapper to Charles Barkley. Tapper is 6' 4" 265. He plays on the Nike Baltimore Elite AAU team, so he must be pretty good.

SIMON ANGLES TO BE TWO-SPORT ATHLETE
Stoops credited Lon Kruger and the basketball staff for Wednesday’s addition of Florida cornerback Gary Simon. Stoops said he was wowed by a Simon dunk when he saw one of his games.
When he visited in late January, Simon met with Kruger. He does have an interest in playing both sports.

Stoops was also impressed with Maryland defensive end Charles Tapper’s hoops prowess.

“He averages about 30 points a game,” Stoops said. “He’s like Charles Barkley in there.”

Stoops likes the basketball players... as footballers. And he's had plenty of good football players who were highly recruited basketballers.

Guys like Dan Cody, who had an in home from Coach K and had considered BB at Duke over football. DeMarco Murray, who was never going to play BB, but gamed well enough to win a state title and be a top 30 BB recruit. I could list a dozen more high school All-Stater basketball players who played for Stoops.

Gary Simon has potential. He knocked down 5 - 3s in a 27 point game the other night.

Bob's "on the record" policy of football players playing basketball does make sense. He said he would allow it IF the player is good enough to be in the rotation. He is not going to allow a football scholarship player to play hoops if he's there basically for practice and mop-up duty. Again, that's his "on the record" policy.

Has there been a football player at OU since Bob took over that anyone here thinks was good enough to crack the hoops rotation?

Gresham was a very good basketball player at Ardmore, and there was talk of him possibly playing both sports before he arrived. Obviously, nothing came of it. He was only 6'5 though, and probably could not have played as a big. Then again, how tall was Abercrombie?

phil loadholt could have played basketball .... we badly needed size .. and he was pretty good bball player and 6'9

Adron "Pooh" Tennell was one of the top basketball players in Texas coming out of high school. As I recall, he averaged something like 28 ppg his senior year, which caught the attention of a number of D-1 BB programs.

That's the way I recall Bob's opinion on the matter, as well. And it applies to all sports... The only player I can recall from the Stoops Era that's played another sport was Brandon Jones (WR); he played baseball at OU as well. I may be missing another player or two that's played another sport, can't recall.

It can be done, but generally there has to be some sort of exception...like the kid is an absolute stud on the hardwood. For example, as BOK mentioned, Ronald Curry was the NPOY coming out of high school in football and basketball.

Andrew Jones. I'm not sure if he plays any for them, but I thought he was an incredible football prospect. Didn't pan out. Injuries I believe.

I bet Lon's position is that sure, I will work with the football program on recruiting. But if you (expletive deleted) me, my help ends.

rw mcquarters was pretty a decent point guard for osu... and had a long nfl career as well...

Brandon Jones also appeared to constantly be in the doghouse for playing baseball. I remember Stoops was not happy with the arrangement.

Based on what I've read in this thread, it appears Bob's "on the record" policy wasn't consistent with his "off the record" policy. With that said, I'm not sure there weren't other reasons Brandon Jones was in the doghouse. I remember that he was a decent #3 or #4 receiver with the Titans, and the 49ers gave him a ridiculous 3-year $18 mil contract with something like a $6 million bonus. Brandon pretty much quit playing at that point. Perhaps his work ethic reared its ugly head at times during his collegiate career.
