Getting players with Height

Konate is another player from an African country who hasn't been in the U.S. too long.

247 says OU is recruiting him but doesn't show he has an offer yet. Several sites show he has an offer from Louisville, Ol' Miss and Minnesota.

Louisville was in the lead but the player cooled on them and OU became involved.

I trust Kruger, but I'm wondering if another big project kid is really what we need in this class?

Maybe he thinks Konate would be the perfect redshirt candidate. The size is there. I saw where he was listed at 6' 11" on a site or two. It's possible he could sit out a year to work on his game and be an intimidator in the paint someday.

Can you imagine how Spangler would feel to have three long, lanky post players to give him some help down low his junior and senior seasons?

I thought McNease was the big guy we were gonna redshirt? :)

You know, some have said that. But, I have never heard anyone around the program mention McNeace and redshirt in the same sentence.

I was granted a few seconds of chit chat time the other day and used it to ask Kruger how the new recruits were progressing through their senior season. He went right into how well and fast McNeace was coming along. I sort of interrupted him and inquired about Buford. He said, "oh he is doing fine. The fans will like all three of them". Then he launched right back into the McNeace praise.

I am pretty sure I have seen Hornbeak dunk in a game. Regardless I would be shocked if he can't dunk a basketball. He is pretty tall and a very good athlete.

Saw him his junior year. In warm ups he was doing wind mills and 360s what seemed effortlessly.

Maybe he is further along than most of us think. Or maybe LK thinks he can get him where he needs to be. With Spangler, Bennett, Buford, and Lattin, McNease won't get many minutes (unless he is clearly better than one of those guys), so in some ways he doesn't have to be all that progressed to get some mop up minutes. Be interesting to see how it all plays out.

There was an end line to that story. I commented that he had already tipped his hand about his willingness to put a freshman right into the lineup. And then asked if any of the new ones were expected to be a lot of help right away. While walking away he glanced back over his shoulder, grinned, and said, "we don't care how old they are."

Are heights listed with shoes on or shoes off? It seems it should be with shoes on to me.

Love it! Kruger is right, he doesn't care. He proved that last year when he started two freshmen.

I like what he said about McNeace, too. A member of our board (can't remember who now) who watched Jamuni play during the regular season seemed to be convinced that he would play as a freshman. Campbest says he has a lot of potential, but doesn't believe he's ready yet.

If the kid continues to improve, it might not be easy to keep him on the bench. He's a relative newcomer to competitive basketball. Here's an interview I found. Check out the part I put in quotes. He didn't even make the team as a freshman in high school. Be sure to check out the pic. Talk about a kid with long arms!:

JM: So, I lived in Texas my freshman year and I was kind of undersized. I was 5’11” I was an undersized post, so I didn’t make the team my freshman year. I ended up going to live with my mom for that summer after the school year ended and she ended up making me stay down there for my sophomore year. And from that time, from my freshman year to my sophomore year, I grew a few inches. I was 6’3 going into my sophomore year and about 6’6 coming out. My HS coach decided that I was good enough to start playing ball, he came to my class and talked to me and told me he’ll work with me. So before school, I’d go and work out with him at 6 AM on ball handling, and then I’d go to school, and after school we had practice and he helped me a lot. So he’s a big part of that.

Sorry for the mistake on his height but was doing it from memory (which isn't very good these days. I did watch Sunrise play on tv this year and thought I saw him play but can't remember much about him.

You weren't wrong, RobinD. His height depends on the site you're on. I saw him listed anywhere 6' 9" to 6' 11".

The only way to get it right is to measure him ourselves. You hold him down and I'll get the tape measure. :D

I think we will need some of the young guys on this board to hold him down while you measure.

Am I interpreting you correctly to infer that you believe McNease might or perhaps even will contribute as a freshman?

If all three guys contribute and one of them contributes signficantly, I think OU is going to be very good. I truly believe Hornbeak and Booker will both improve enough to do everything they do this year plus what Neal does.

I'm not predicting at this point. Just reporting.

The bigs that can play. The better! Let's roll tonight though!
