Gibbs joins the Sooners!

She's such a raw talent that no D-1 school offered her except us -- and we did it after NLOI day, right?

Well, I hope she turns into a basketball version of "The Natural."

From Sherri's above posted quote, it is clear Gibbs is a project, probably a major one. We haven't faired to well lately with those types of players.

Perhaps we are due to break through and find a diamond in the rough.

She sounds like the complete opposite of some of the projects we've had lately. You can teach basketball skills to an athlete (think Ny Stevenson). You can't teach athleticism to a stiff.

Many on this board keep bemoaning lack of athleticism. Also much wailing and gnashing of teeth that we would leave a scholarship unused. From their stand point this looks like a good chance to take.

I would disagree with that statement as a general rule. If that were true for all athletes, coaches would primarily recruit track stars and make basketball players out of them. I agree that basketball skills can be improved over time with the right athletes and good coaching but I'm not sure it is a good idea to think any great athlete can become a great or even good basketball player.

That said, Gibbs' stats are pretty good so perhaps she has some ability. But, like others have said, it seems odd that no other D-1 coaches offered her.

Hmmmm - I seem to remrmber a young man from OKC by the name of Wes Welker - only TT offered him and he was never high on their (TTs) list of prospects.

Welker is an incredible player and OU coaches didn't think he was big enough to play. Same thing happened when Barry Sanders was in high school... Switzer didn't think he was big enough to play at OU either.

If Gibbs ends up in the WNBA as one of the all time greats, we will all be thrilled.

If Gibbs has a solid career with the University of Oklahoma I will be ecstatic!!!!

Something to think about, One reason she might not have been recruited is she could be an academic challenge to some schools. She may have convinced the staff that she would use the resources to help her succeed at the next level and Sherri was willing to take a chance on her. I hope she surprises all of us.
