Gibbs joins the Sooners!

I'm sure that Patty, or someone on her staff, watches every player before they offer. But, there are softball recruiting services and I'm sure she gets leads from those services as well as other avenues.

Patti travels to see each individual recruit in person before offering a scholarship. This was a big deal when she had to travel to Australia for Georgia Casey.

She obviously is a great evaluator of talent. Excellent saleswoman as well.

If this young women is good at basketball why is she just now signing? I just hope she's not another stiff like some of our other post players in the last few years.

If anyone sees anything written about Gibbs in the coming weeks, I hope they will post it here. Otherwise, we probably won't know much at all until this fall.

Coale usually has her next years roster posted on soonersports.com by now. The old one is still up.

Is there still some doubt she is joining? Or just if she is on campus this summer? Since the school released a statement, I would think she would be on the team next year.

I feel sure she will be on the team but I doubt if she is at OU at this time.

Have we ever had a player with this many unanswered questions?

I thought all the newbies always enrolled for the summer session. I may be wrong, however.

Due to the language of the announcement, let's make an assumption.
Felisha Gibbs, a 6-2 forward from Earle (Ark.) High School, filed a financial aid agreement and will join the Sooners in the fall.
The statement said two things that bear on this issue:
a) that they have filed a financial aid agreement
b) that she will join the Sooners in the fall.

Now, the second part seems very clear. She will join the Sooners in the fall.
The first part is more curious. Why was a financial aid agreement filed? Why was this terminology used rather than simply saying she had signed a letter of intent?

She is such a late find that I wonder if she had been cleared by the NCAA. Had she not even considered it? Not every highschool curriculum qualifies you for an NCAA scholarship. Had she thought it more likely that she would go to JC? Did she have the right curriculum at the appropriate time? Did they find it necessary to complete some examination, and then to proceed to seek clearance from the NCAA? If this is the case, she may well not be able to attend OU on any scholarship or financial aid until it is approved by the NCAA. Thus, she either pays for it herself, or she waits until she is cleared. She may not even have that option. How important would clearance be before she reported?

I might be able to find the truth, will let you know if I can

All good questions Syb.

If find Gibbs' discovery, her recruitment and signing (or whatever it is) to be extremely interesting.

Does she have someone close to the program or OU athletics like Wyatt?

I've never heard of a situation quite like this.

If she just signed a financial aid package, that does not necessarily mean an athletic scholarship. She could have some kind of funding from the academic side to go ahead and enroll here.

She may not have cleared the NCAA yet -- which in itself is interesting. If she hasn't, why hasn't she? Grades? Maybe she didn't think she was going to get a college basketball scholarship or wasn't going to play in college.

And if she didn't try to clear the NCAA, does that mean no one recruited her before us? If so, why did we?

Coupled with all the summer camp stuff and Hansmeyer's abrupt departure, it seems like we have a bit of interesting, unanswered questions going on in the program.

Gibbs is not in the OU directory yet. Everyone else is.
It could simply be that she needs to pass the NCAA clearinghouse a process that can take months.
Or since she was not able to sign a LOI maybe she cannot enroll until August.
I'm not sure on the rules around LOI versus grant in aid paperwork.

This is what occurred to me too but that's just my guess.

Well OU had to wait for her to be qualified to sign her to a grant in aid.
Likely means that she has not gone thru the NCAA Clearinghouse yet.
And that easily could be the hold up.

A LOI is binding on both the school and the player. The player has agreed to attend the school and the school has agreed to enter into a financial aid agreement.

Skipping the LOI and going straight to the financial aid agreement only binds the school. The player is free to enroll in any school they please in the fall.

There are a variety of reasons that could be in play. After the official signing period has passed, there would be no LOI, just a financial aid agreement. A player only signs a LOI once. So a transfer or a player that had signed a LOI and gotten out of it would only sign a financial aid agreement with the different school.

So, a LOI is a binding agreement for both parties and a financial aid agreement is binding on the school and nothing more than a verbal agreement on the part of the player. There probably isn't anything going on in this case. It could be a NCAA clearing house issue or it could be nothing more that the fact that the financial aid agreement is getting to be trendy with some prospects.

I'm puzzled, if she is good, why did she not have more schools after her?

I have no idea. She has pretty good size, good stats, and according to Sherri is a very good athlete. If all that is true, one would think she would be a hot commodity.

Found this from a little more than 30 days ago on OU Insider: Last we heard OU as waiting on whether she had a passing grade or something like that. Is there any update on this young lady?

Was also intrigued by a Sharri quote: " She's a raw basketball player who has a genuine desire to develop her natural gifts."
