I think you're reading way too into that exchange. James was basically saying "you don't want me to do that, look how it turned out last time I tried" as a joke. Not to mention, James wouldn't care if Buddy stays around or not because he's done at OU. He and M'Baye were really good friends. That's why he "tried" to talk him into staying. Although, I would bet he was like any other of the people around M'Baye telling him to do what he thought was right. Doubt he really tried hard to get M'Baye to stay. I really think that tweet was as much to start a convo with M'Baye than it was to actually respond to what the fan said. Players look at these situations completely differently than the fans do.
