Hornbeak and Hield revisited

Went back and watched a couple of their videos today.

Love their slashing and scoring ability in the lane. That's something that's needed.

I'm excited too, but I hope fans don't expect too much from them next year. The dribble drive, penetration, and finishing is probably one of the more difficult things for HS guards to adjust to at the college level. The shooters can still shoot right away, but the other aspects of being a guard sometimes take a bit longer to translate. That is why I'm hoping Hield can come in and be a guy that can shoot 35% from three. That would be great for his first year.

The thing I notice on both films though is that Hield has a low release and doesn't get much lift on his outside shot. His strength seems to be more of the drive and mid-range game. Hornbeak looks better equiped to be able to create his own shot from the 3 or still drive. Both look like nice prospects though.

You're right about Hield's shot. But he seems to have a knack for getting separation and he appears to finish well inside. It's certainly possible he may have trouble in getting his perimeter shots off against bigger, quicker defenders in college. His stroke and his release are so smooth, though, it may not be wise to try and change it at this point in his career.

I believe both players will get meaningful minutes by the start of conference play next year. I was really impressed with Hornbeak in the game I watched several weeks ago. Versatile guards who can score are a plus on every college team, and from what I've seen, these two fit that description.

If they can come off the bench and just score a little it will help. We have no one on the bench now that is a scoring threat. Newell really would have helped, but he failed to understand the meaning of patience.

If they combine to score 6 points per game, Grooms ads 2 points per game and B'Baye adds 10 points per game while everyone else remains the same OU is a way bettter team. Even if you drop the combined averages of Osby, Fitzgerald, and Pledger by 10 a game the team is still up 8 a game. These guys and M'Baye are going to make a big difference.

Besides the pace of the game, biggest adjustment for players (especially slashers) is how hard it is to get from the three point line to the basket in the half court. In high school, pretty easy since there are such few shot blockers, once you hit college, if you take more than a dribble (sometimes two depending on the spacing) your shot is going to get beat.
