This was a horrible game to watch. Lloyd Noble was completely dead for 90% of the game. No defense played by either team. It's really sad to watch basketball when the players are afraid to play defense. I'm not just talking about OU either. Both teams were scared to touch anybody. I hope those of you who get your kicks out of higher scoring games and more fouls are happy because I can't stand this nonsense; these rule changes/emphasis are garbage. Completely ruining the college game for me. I was hoping things would get better in conference play, but nope it's going to be garbage all season long.

As for the Sooners; I thought the team played hard & smart most of the evening, Kansas was just too big and athletic in the front court, which allowed them to win the game on the offensive boards. One road and home game in the books against good teams and we are 1-1, can't complain about that. Let's beat Iowa State!!

OU is a nice team but KU is a complete team and is a Final Four threat.

Sooners are getting there but need some bigs, though help is on the way for next year.

And both dante and lattin are not going to be the answer right away. Its going to take some time.

Tons of ticky-tacks were called and then hard fouls were ignored. Very difficult to stomach the officials in this game.

However, I doubt it would've made much difference. The Sooners lost the game in the first five minutes and had to spend too many fouls trying to recover.

Wiggins doesn't like he's NBA ready. Selden and Clark do.

Kansas is nowhere near a Final Four team....They've lost to pretty much all the quality teams they have played, except Duke, etc..

I like the new rule changes. They get rid of all the mugging, pushing, and shoving. Teams can still play lock down defense. They just have to move their feet and stay in front of their man. They also have to get back to fundamental help defense. Tonight neither team rotated very well from the weak side. KU is young and will get better at it. OU on the other hand is a little more perplexing because they are a little older and Lon's teams are usually much better defensively.

I appreciate your optimism, but it's clear players are afraid to play aggressive defense. You cannot have a passive mindset and play good/great defense. And unlike so many, I appreciate a physical basketball game. I can hardly stomach what is going on all over the country.

I don't mind jockeying for position on the blocks and bodying players down low. I will say that Bilas made a good point tonight about refs needing to allow the defensive player the rule of verticality especially with the new rule changes.

Then don't. Stay home and watch PBS.

SDSU locked down KU the entire game. Granted they are a top 5 defensive team in the country. Just saying you can play great defense with these new rules. The new rules put an emphasis on protecting the rim, which we cannot do very well.

except now they call touch fouls.

Why can't they just keep the old rules and call the mugging and pushing?

Just wait and watch, KU has struggled because they are young, by March they will be tough to beat.

I'm not a KU fan at all, but they have the pieces to be really good.

If this was the 4th or 5th game of the season, not the 15th, I might agree that the change in the way games are being called is contributing to our porous defense. When you factor in two exhibition games, this team had more than enough time to make the adjustment. It's not like these changes caught anyone by surprise. It's also not like OU is the only team that had to adapt to these changes. The rules are the same for everyone. Yes, a few games lately have taken on the look of last year's games where defenders were allowed to be more physical. But on the whole, the majority of games I have watched have been fairly consistent. Besides, players and coaches have always had to adjust to the way a game is being officiated. It's been that way for as long as I can remember.

I'm baffled by the way this team is playing on defense, or more correctly, the way they're not performing. The biggest surprise is our guards. I honestly thought that our three freshmen last year (Cousins, Hield and Hornbeak) were as good on defense as any group of guards I have seen in years. They seemed to have all of the tools: size, good footwork, quick hands, a nose for the ball and an aggressive style that created problems for our opponents.

All three of those players are mere shells of what they were last season on defense. It's easy to blame it on a concern about getting into foul trouble if they man up more. But that still doesn't explain how we are giving up wide open shots from the perimeter or allowing players to drive the lane without opposition from anyone. I'm not pointing the finger at only those three. It's everyone. Good defense is a team effort.

I know we don't have a big down low who can defend the middle. When Spangler is not on the floor, teams pretty much have their way inside. One would think that means we're getting killed by our opponents' big men, but that is not the case. Our backcourt is creating a new "first team all Big 12" [sarcasm] player in every game. Selden goes off for 24 points on 5 of 10 shooting from three last night; Felix gets 28 in the UT game (Croaker is 5 of 10 from three); Hamilton and Appleby combine for 53 points in the La Tech game (Hamilton with 32). And, that's just the last three games.

Go back through nearly every game this year and the story will be similar. The guards on the teams we're playing are doing the most damage, because our guards our doing a poor job of defending them. It's that simple. Sure, the absence of a shot-blocking, shot-altering big down low makes it more difficult to defend the interior now. Every team we play is driving the lane more. Drive and dish or drive and get fouled is a familiar game plan this season. That still doesn't explain how a team like OU that appeared to be built for defending their opponents the way the games are being called can't find a way to get stops when we need them the most?

If I had an answer, I would gladly share it. The only thing I know is that complaining about the officiating will not change a thing. It is what it is, and this team will have to adjust going forward if they want to get back to the dance this season.

Absolutely! Inconsistent officiating. It is not the rule changes that make it difficult for the players to play today's game. It is the inconsistency of the officiating.

Call the game consistently by the rules and the game will become more of a finesse game basketball was designed to be where defenders played with their feet instead of their bodies and hands. Don't and defenders will try to use the brute force they have been practicing for the last decade. Call it inconsistently and you get the worst of both worlds.

Depth is our issue. We don't have inside guys to play or that that Lon trusts ( Bennett) Spangler, Clark , Neal are afraid to foul and so do not protect the rim as hard as they should. More inside players will help. But I also see our guards reaching for a steal and the next thing you know there guy is by them. I think we need to work on staying infront of our guys and not going for as many steals.

Was it a hard foul or hard contact?

There is a distinct difference.

Jay Bilas said during the broadcast last night that at some point in time they need to play better defense. And I'm sure he's familiar w/the numbers situation.
