With the recent pickups how many schollies does that leave for next year?

I am alittle suprise by the center pickup we just got... From the sounds of it he won't be able to contribute alot next year, we could have used another schollie for next year... Capel must see a huge upside to this kid to use another schollie on him... It's hard to tell what upside this kid has with virtually no info on him

I would bet there will be attrition after the season, one way or another.

What Capel must see is the need to have a positive year next year. Schollys for next year require a next year to exist.

If nobody else is signed, looks like there will be two to give at this point.

What makes you believe he will not be able to contribute next year?

Scholarships are a year to year deal. Depends on how good the players are and which players contribute to the team.

This convinced me ..... stats from his US tournament. It's a big adjustment from HS to D-1 and he didn't overwhelm at the HS level. I would put my money on him needing a year to adjust..... like a Longar Longar. JMHO.

Earlier this February Abdi' team made it over to the US to play in the National Prep School invitational. I believe this is the same tournament that Newell blew up in.

Abdi's stats from those four games.

Tournament Averages
4.8 Points per game, 7.8 rebounds (2.5 offensive), 23.8 minutes a game

and despite those 4 games he still averaged over 18pts. 12reb. and 2 blocks a game for the year...

with the center we have one guy over 6'9" on the team this year and will surely get better next year.

you would like to have an empty scholly this year so basically air or wasted space and then have a new player next year with no experience.

so green 6'10" in 10/11 and exp 6'10" in 11/12
or
100% waste of roster spot in 10/11 and hope somebody good that will be green in 11/12

hmm i wonder which will make the team better? do you get any points for wasting schollies?

I'm sorry but I'm a bit skeptical of the competition level of a basketball academy in the Canary Islands. Hopefully, he has tremendous upside. His stats showed he was a little underwhelming in his only US tournament. Maybe he was injured or sick..... I haven't seen him play but if I had to put my money one way or the other, I would bet he needs a year to adjust to the "speed of the game". I sincerely hope that's not the case.

I once refereed a JV tournament in Houston where Rashard Lewis was playing. I think he was a sophomore..... I couldn't believe he wasn't on the varsity. He's been in the NBA for 8-10 years now so kids can get better.

I'm not dissing Abdi but just think he has a huge learning gap to overcome in one year.

Why can't we just be happy that Capel found an solid big man this late in the signing period. He is an athletic 6' 10 kid. There are not that many people that have that. At worst he can provide depth at the 4 and the 5. If he grows into a star than that is bonus, but I will take an athletic player that puts up 6, 10, and 2.

My thoughts exactly.
