I was for keeping Capel, but that is history now. If I was Joe, I would take a hard look at Brooks Thompson at USTA. He has built that program from scratch, has a very loyal and effective recruiting staff (all with ties to the junior college scene and Texas), Brooks is a good recruiter and knows his way around Texas and Oklahoma.

Young guy that could come in and stay. I have seen UTSA play a few times and their style is a mix of hard core physical Eddie Sutton defense and a mixed bag on offense. They really work it around in the half court, but seem to run more than Eddie ever did. So, I don't know really how to describe their offense. I was at the OSU game this year when USTA played them even for 3/4 of the game. I sat behind the USTA bench and really liked how Brooks handled the players -- very very firm, but then supportive. Don't know, but it seemed the kids played very hard for him. Of course, they were outmatched by OSU talent in the end.

Boy...I hated him when he played in Stillwater, but he was one tough SOB and I loved his intensity.

I could get excited about hiring him. He was a heck of a good college basketball player.

I would probably go nuts if Brooks was in Norman and Self in Lawrence.

*UTSA

Hadn't really thought of that. He does seem to be doing a good job down there, but that's a pretty low major job right now (until it moves to the WAC for a few years). Normally a mid major would be the next step for him wouldn't it?

I think he would be a really good fit at TU, once they finally ditch Wojcik.

Every D1 school not in a bcs conference is considered a mid major. UTSA is playing tonight in the NCAA tourney

Valid point about OSU boys in Norman and Lawrence. It would be enough to make you sick.

But, Brooks is an intriguing prospect. He has all of Eddie's contacts and his NBA prospects ((he has a championship ring in fact)). People at OU just don't have any idea of how vast Eddie's coaching tree and influence goes, it has been and is the recruiting lifeblood of that program even now.

With Sean having been fired and Scott not considered for the job, maybe we can steal some of that high school and junior college pipeline for ourselves. Who knows. I know his top assistant, Jeff Rinager (s) is one of the most connected guys in the country in the junior college ranks. He was the main assistant at the Idaho Juco that produced Galloway and Patillo. He told me once to watch out for those two kids when they got to OSU (said they were really special nba type athletes), and then when Sean was fired, they went to Kentucky and OU.

Oh well, I doubt OU would look at an aggie but I just thought I would throw Brooks out there as food for thought. I really do think he is going to be big time one day --maybe another Self. They are cut from the same cloth.

Not how people generally talk about it. Mid majors are conferences like the Mountain West or Missouri Valley, conferences like the Southland are normally considered low majors.

I haven't noticed much difference in UTSA the 35 straight years we've played them.

At least you could tell Self was building ORU on a year-to-year basis. I don't get the same feel from Brooks.

Exactly. Otherwise, what would a mid major be the middle between? There are fairly clear distinctions between high major, mid major and low major from a conference standpoint. There are some individual teams that can blur the lines (i.e. Memphis and Gonzaga are high major programs in mid major conferences).

I know Coach Thompson and he is a great guy. Does a very good job at UTSA and he also tries very hard to get to know local coaches. He went out of his way to invite me to campus when I was in San Antonio and showed me around, sat in his office and talked to me and made me feel at home. His assistant coaches were the same. I liked them all.

He would do a very good job if he were the choice.

I actually like Brooks Thompson. I'd certainly give the guy an interview...but only because he was on the Orlando roster with the GREATEST COLLEGE PLAYER OF ALL TIME SCOTT SKILES!!!!!!!

Brooks is my all-time favorite OSU player. His senior year was my freshman year at OSU.

One of my favorite memories was him shoving Jason Sutherland (who was a freshman) when they got tangled up out of bounds (right in front of me) and calling him a "little b**ch."

You want a coach who can emphasize toughness to his players.

No former aggies please !! Someone also mentioned Danny Manning to Traber today. He shot that down as I would have too !
