I wonder why CJ didn't get more recruiting interest?

I don't know if you can't get that type of talent at OU. I think you can but you need to have depth in a program first. When Tubbs left I would say there was almost no way you can get a star like we got with Blake Griffin. We've had a lot of top talents in Oklahoma since the mid 90s and most of them went to Kansas or elsewhere. Giddens, Xavier, Sheldon Williams off the top of my head. There's been a lot more over the years. Early on Kelvin nearly got Stevie Francis. But the thing he did have was constant depth. Even at his worst in his NIT year where everyone was hurt, we won 20 games that year. The only years where I can say we didn't have a lot of depth was a couple early years when we basically just had a decent starting lineup. But from about 98 or 99 on we had some pretty quality depth if you think about it. Then the year where everyone got hurt of course.

The constant mass exodus of recruits needs to stop. It's okay to lose 1 or 2 guys like we did under Kelvin most years but we've really only had a few recruits under Capel stay as long as they should have, and even fewer that were starters stay as long as they should have. We were lucky to have a lot of Kelvin left overs like Godbold, AJ, Crocker, Taylor Griffin that helped us win those first few years.

Selvy is 3x better athlete than CJ. Selvy is 3x the athlete of ALOT of B12 players tho. Now CJ may possess better skills, but comparing him to Selvy is unfair to CJ. He didn't get more recruiting interest because he is a 6'7 post player who is not a great athlete. Being at Connors St had nothing to do with it, as they have had some of the most highly recruitied players in the country over the years. He is not going to be Taj Gray, Darian Selvy, or even Johnnie Gilbert. Hopefully he will be a solid contributor and get us through until we can get some studs back in LNC.

If we would quit over-hyping this kid he might be a pleasant surprise. Otherwise he is going to be a letdown for a lot of fans.

Selvy was a little shorter at about 6-5 or 6-6, probably not a true post because of his athletic ability. At times Selvy would defend some small forwards and guards.

LOL: CJ was a good as signed by ORU until Jeff Capel, in his frenzied efforts to sign some "character guys" in the wake of last season, made the late offer this past spring. Hard for a native Oklahoman to turn down the ol' Crimson & cream when an offer is made; otherwise CJ would be playing for the Golden Eagles this year. Hope he made the right choice - frankly, I think he's undersized for the Big XII, but he could have been a force at a mid-major like ORU.

He really like Murray State as well and they had a really good team last year. Western Kentucky was showing interest as well. Those may not be big conference affiliated teams, but are good programs.

I don't think anyone is over hyping him, I really doubt people expect a 12 point and a 15 board average. I could be wrong, but I know I am not, but I am excited to have him, not because of the talent that he will bring to the team, but more so for the HEART he will bring to the team. I see him in the mold of Ernie Abercrombie, not the most talented person on the floor, but definitely the most DEDICATED and PASSIONATE person on the floor, that was something that was sorely lacking last year and something I look forward to seeing this year.

Why?
'Cause the BanMan CAN!

6'5" PFs who do most of their damage w/in 15 feet are not usually highly sought after regardless of how productive they are.

CJ will play like a highly sought after player...
