Is This Rock Bottom For the Program?

good coaches have players that improve as the year goes on ..

I was thinking about this yesterday in regards to Fears ... early in the year all we heard was "Moser knew he would make mistakes but he has to let him play through them" .. and that worked Fears was playing loose (sometimes too loose ) and free .. and was borderline dominate.

in conf play (especially after the rough start) Moser has gone back to his micro management ways ..

and the Team and Fears in particular are playing tight ..
This. I used to love listening to Kelvin's first postgame interviews in the 90s. "John Ontjes will be much better in February than he is in November. Ernie Abercrombie....". That's one thing I miss. Even though conference is obviously tougher, it's not hard to tell if the team is improving or not. OU hasn't in the Moser or the last part of the Kruger era. With Sampson it was obvious they got better from the beginning to the end of the year. Same with Bob in football. At least in their heydays.. Continuous improvement as the year went on. Haven't seen that in either sport in awhile..

And Kelvin's teams still do that, even as he has stepped into a much better league than he was in when they played in the AAC.

I loved Kelvin from day one, for a lot of reasons, but a main one is that his teams ALWAYS have an identity. He has evolved offensively, but his teams ALWAYS defend, rebound, and don't turn the ball over. Even today, Houston still has too many stretches where they get bogged down offensively, which is frustrating, but you know they will always be good at what they are good at. And players improve, both during the season and throughout their careers. He is one of the toughest coaches in the country on his players, but they never transfer out -- I think they have had three rotation players transfer in his decade at Houston. They know they will improve, they know they will win, and they know they will learn a ton.

I've repeated this many times, but one of the most depressing things about Moser is that we have zero identity, unless you count being mentally and physically soft, There is not a single area of the sport where we have been consistently good. And in some areas, like rebounding and turnovers, we have been consistently bad. It's just maddening that after 123 games, the guy seems to have no idea what he wants to rely on. If he came out and started pressing for 40 minutes and having us shoot 40 threes a game, we may lose by 40 a night, but at least it would be a specific system and approach. Pick something and try it, man!

the other thing with kelvins system (even though this at times could be frustrating keeps bad teams around) is that it shows up against good teams ..

they compete period, defense and rebounding travel ..

I think he has been tailoring the offense to his personel. The team has had huge turnover every season, so that hurts team identity and player development. That is not an excuse but an explaination, and it is definitely on Moser. The development part seems below average in particular.

Lots of fans from other teams have interest in Porter Moser. That Final Four goes a long way, whether or not he is a good person, he still has that rep from Loyola.

Mid-Major teams will be interested if he wants out. Look for dominos to fall with Indiana and see what opens up from there or openings up from plucked head coaches.

IMO, if his buyout was less, he would be gone already.

That being said, he is back on the hot seat. Just need to find a good way to either take a small hit on the buyout for a smaller market school, or bite the bullet.

I will say, per the discord, I do not like the first names floated as replacements, but do not think those are very well sourced. (tbh)
Is the “discord” the Trilly discord? I dropped out after last summer’s portal. Is it still worthwhile?

He’ll go to work at espn as an analyst. Greenberg couldn’t cut it as a coach either. He’ll be the Mack brown of their basketball broadcasts.
Porter would be good on TV.

There is a parallel between Porter and Seth Greenberg. Seth kept barely missing the tournament at Virginia Tech before going into TV.

Who were the names floated again? I know Crutchfield is one.

Sorry, missed this message.

Um, depends on how addicted you are to college basketball? I am a junkie, so I am browsing their chats a lot. The Oklahoma page isn't really worth it until the portal opens back up. So honestly, advising others, I would say wait until portal time. Personal opinion, but I also don't mind $6 a month for all the info when it comes.

Good point, but there was an additional reason Seth got fired - Steph Curry. When your dad is the best player in school history and his son wants a scholarship there, you better have a damn good reason for not giving him one. Yes, all the big programs missed out on Curry, but only one wound up with egg on their face.

I wouldn't be surprised if Moser wound up on ESPN. Why not? He's not going to ever make the money he made at OU again. As such, he can go backwards in coaching or try something new.

Well you need to sadly adjust your expectations bc tradition doesn't really matter at all anymore. It's $$$. Plus, also not having a moron for a coach
You can say that but then you see teams like Mississippi state and Missouri having a better bball program than OU. No way that they are outspending us in men’s bball.
