The stats are mounting against the current regime... The conference losses, the blowouts, etc. So far they have gotten by in the media and to a large part amongst the fans by beating (even by narrow margins) inferior teams.
Rewind to Saturday, January 8th. They played the least talented top 6 team in the league at home, got beat by 20, and the fan boards went into total meltdown.
There are no more Coppin States, Maryland Eastern Shores, Central Arkansas', etc to stop the bleeding. From here on out, everyone is really good. Even traditional bottom feeders like Colorado and Nebraska are tough. Hell, Colorado has two draft picks, one possible lottery pick. Texas Tech, as bad as they have been, are better. There is nowhere to hide.
Can any program, especially a once proud one like OU, really sustain getting beat by 15+, 20+, 25+ time and time again? Think about how bad things have been for OU in the media and amongst the fans after 1 bad conference loss. What happens after the next one? And the next one?
At some point the situation becomes unsustainable. Even crappy basketball schools fire their coaches after losing enough.
Tonight is actually a huge night... If they get run out of the gym and go to 0-2, not only will the media and fans crumble around the program some more, but the team itself will see that they can't compete.
These are indeed strange times for OU basketball.
