Isaiah Austin returning to Baylor

How Scott Drew manages to get these kids to return I have no idea. Did Perry Jones teach Austin nothing?

Literally EVERY top 25 recruit that has gone to Baylor has dropped in draft standings, BIG TIME.

Perry Jones III was projected as a TOP 3 PICK...ended up going 29th!

Quincy Miller was projected top 10...ended up going in the second round.

Unreal.

That just means they were overrated texas recruits out of high school. Who should be surprised? We see this every season with football players from Texas who are consistently overrated.

Pretty much anything to do with Texas has a good portion of hot air associated with it and should be downgraded. Speaking of Texas, does W's library in Dallas have a coloring book section?

I can't believe nobody has thrown out the "they don't want to take a paycut" comment yet.

You would say it's a good decision, but then you wonder if he can get any better.

It's a bad decision because next years draft is much, much stronger. Several big time prospects returned to school (McGary and Robinson III from Michigan, Smart, the guard from Mich St., Cauley-Stein and Poythress from Kentucky), and next years high school and international classes are much better. Even if Austin gets better next year, he's going to fall in the draft.

Really bad decision when it comes to the money. Likewise for Smart. When you're guaranteed to go in the top half of the first round (or really, just make a roster), it makes sense to go pro. The sooner you're there, the sooner you'll get to your second contract and the longer you'll be earning a veteran salary. An extra year in school could cost him as much as $20 million just for that one season.

But if that extra year is actually going to help him develop so that he gets to that second contract, good move. Staying at Baylor (or OSU) isn't going to do that, though.

How many of them think they are going to be the next Blake Griffin and be the #1 pick next year?

Good point. No doubt this enters into the thinking of some of these players.

As a college basketball fan, I like to see these guys play in college for another season.

I did this research recently- but the top 10 recruits who end up actually going in the lottery for the next NBA draft (Freshman year) was surprisingly low- around 25%. Just look at the Big12 for plenty of examples- Josh Selby; Willie Warren; LeBryan Nash; Avery Bradley; Perry Jones; Quincy Miller...

Perry should have come out after his freshman year- but the lockout spooked a lot of guys that year. Quincy Miller should have definitely stayed another year- bad decision on his part. He was rated top 10 going into his senior year and then blew out his ACL and most people would say you are not back to 100% until that 2nd year after the ACL tear.

Austin is an interesting case. I don't know if his stock will improve unless he really gets after it defensively- something he has shown no desire to do consistently. The torn labrum in his shoulder is what seems to have sent him back to Baylor. He had cleaned out his apartment and everyone at Baylor assumed he was gone. And then he tore a muscle late last week which would have prevented him from having work-outs leading up to the draft. He viewed it as too big of a risk to take.

I think Jefferson will be the better pro personally, but maybe my eyes see things that others do not.

Those 2 guys had injury issues before coming to Baylor that hurt their draft stocks.

Said he is staying because he has a shoulder injury and couldn't perform in NBA workouts and he really enjoys his teammates. Said he still would have gone though if he didn't like his teammates so much.

:ez-roll:

Maybe you beat them to it. Made me laugh when I saw it, though.

I also couldn't help but think there may be some truth to what you said. One thing is certain, Drew does not continue to attract high-profile recruits to Baylor because his players or his teams overachieve, or because he's a great coach.

As most of you know, Will Rogers (November 4, 1879 – August 15, 1935) was a famous Oklahoman. He was a cowboy, vaudeville performer, humorist, social commentator and motion picture actor. He was one of the world's best-known celebrities in the 1920s and 1930s.

Among many famous quotes attributed to Will Rogers, there is this: "When should a college athlete turn pro? Not until he has earned all he can in college as an amateur.”

Some things never change.
