Fred Hoiberg is well aware of the gaping hole on his résumé -- he has zero coaching experience. So the Iowa State coach went out and found someone to sit beside him that did.
Hoiberg told ESPN.com that he has hired former Charlotte head coach Bobby Lutz as his assistant.
Lutz spent 12 years with the 49ers, making five NCAA tournament appearances and wracking up a record of 218-158.
He was fired this year after Charlotte lost seven of its final eight games, including an embarrassing blunder in the Atlantic 10 tournament. The 49ers were called for a technical foul for having too many men on the court in the final minute. Massachusetts went on to win the game and the 49ers did not receive an NIT bid.
"From all the people I've talked to who have been in this business a long time, they all told me the most important thing was to surround myself with the right people," Hoiberg said. "Bobby has been a very successful head coach, he's been to the NCAA tournament and when I started doing my research and watched his games, I could tell we had the same philosophy."
Hoiberg said Lutz will be on board in Ames before the critical July recruiting period begins.
Hoiberg, who starred at Iowa State as a player, spent five years in the Minnesota Timberwolves front office after retiring from the NBA in 2005 with a heart condition.
He said he didn't know Lutz personally at all prior to beginning his search for an assistant but that several of his contacts in the NBA suggested he put Lutz at the top of his assistant coach wish list. When he met Lutz, the two immediately hit it off.
"This is such an important hire for me," he said. "The fact that I've been able to get someone of his pedigree is critical."
