If he could coach anywhere near as well as he can recruit, he would be a terror.

This sentiment gets expressed often, here and elsewhere, and I just don't see it. I'm not saying he's a bad recruiter, but which season, exactly, would you have been willing to trade OU's players straight up for oswho's?

He doesn't know how to recruit his team's needs ala Felton Jeffrey Capel III.

I can't remember names or years but the Flopper and there was one other forward on that team that, had he had good coaching, would have been an addition to OU.

There have been a couple of players, yeah (I'd want the Flopper only with Kruger at the helm -- Capel wouldn't have been able to rein in his nonsense), but overall, I don't envy the aggies when I look at their players.

Any decent recruiter gets the odd standout here or there, but folks often post about Ford as if his team is loaded with star power year in and year out, and I just don't see it.

His teams are never That loaded, but he did land the number 36 recruit from this past season, and had Marcus Smart and Lebryan Nash. the Team with Smart, Nash, and Markel Brown should have been much better than they were. But good for OU they don't have a good coach.

He's had more pro level players than OU.

Does anyone have any idea how good Igor Ibaka will be? He has very little playing experience in games but you would have to think he has been working out with NBA guys for the past couple of years.

Two players recruited by Ford have spent time in the NBA; two Sooners have also done so in that same span, both recruited by Capel.

But you didn't specify the NBA. I wonder how many players from the two schools have played professionally overseas during Ford's tenure in Stillwater. I suspect OU has more, but haven't looked into it.

But a college coach's task as a recruiter isn't to send players to the NBA; it's to find the right mix of talented players to achieve success at the college level. If a coach sends a player to the NBA every year, but the rest of his players are so-so and his team achieves limited success, is he a good recruiter? I'd say no.

Ford has Marcus Smart, Markel Brown, Joe Anderson, and I could have sworn someone else in the NBA.

Markel Brown was a great college player... that team should have been better.

Four guys who played under him have seen time in the NBA, but he recruited just two of them, and that was the topic of the discussion.
