Kelvin Sampson news from ESPN

I realize that. That is why I said he better get an offensive genius.
Sampson is a defensive coach.
I wasn't arguing with you. He will get some good people around him. Phil Jackson has won 10 titles with an offense he didn't create. (he's also had a few "decent" players)

I would jump for joy for Kelvin if he got an NBA job! No one deserves it more.

KS lied and cheated and got us put on probation,I don't really care what he does.If Kellen were up for the job I might care because at least he seems to have the integrity that his old man flushed.

Kelvin's coaching philosophy would be a perfect for the Bulls. I would like to see how Rose and LJ would flourish under the guidance of KS. I think LJ would develop some needed toughness playing under Kelvin.

For some reason I am picturing Kelvin being similar to Jerry Sloan at Utah.

Old school, always play hard, always play defense, rebound, and be in the playoffs all the time without having the most talented team in the league.

PG: Derrek Rose
SG:
SF: Luol Deng
PF: Joakim Noah
C:

They have 3 good pieces... They need 2 or 3 more.

If I am Chicago, I would be hoping to get Paul George with the #17 pick. He measured 6'8'' with shoes on at the draft combine. This guy has Rudy Gay written all over him.... He can shoot well from the 3pt line too. Rose, George, and Deng would make quite the backcourt.

Can't say that I disagree...but from an assistant's role I think he'd be much more effective. I'm not sure he has the respect or communication skills to deal with NBA players as the head coach. He's never done it. And if he hadn't been basically banished from the NCAA probably wouldn't want to have done it.
8 years ago if we had a thread about KS going to be a head coach in the NBA everyone would be saying no way and the NBA primma donna's couldn't take his old school mentality. I don't see why it would be any different now.

I like KS a lot as a college coach, and knowing him back from his OU days he's an even better person. But this would be a terrible hire.

I think he's way too meticulous and strict on his players for the NBA. If college players were frustrated with him to the point that many of them either transfered or thought about transferring, how do you think grown, professional players would handle him?

Great college coach. Would not be at all for the NBA.

+1

I'm sure he's a solid assistant coach in the league, but his head coaching tendencies and philosophies are more conducive towards the college game.

Sampson talked a bit about this in his interview with James Hale a few weeks ago. He said he knows that he was a disciplinarian in college, but recognizes the NBA is a completely different beast. It's difficult to say for sure if his instincts would start to creep back in as a pro coach, and whether or not he'd be able to suppress them if they did, but I think he realizes you cannot treat grown men the way you do college athletes.

That's a fair point.

No one knows how he would handle his hiring, but IMO I think his instincts would end up taking over. I just don't see him going from strict disciplinarian to a laid-back coach.

Surely there's a large area in between those two poles, though, where he might fall. Not every NBA coach is laid back, I wouldn't think.

Should specify: I meant laid-back enough to succeed in the NBA.

That's what I'm unsure he can do.

My first reaction is that he would be to hard on players to succeed in the NBA. But the really good people do the best job of adjusting to whatever environment they are in.

Calipari who is loose as anyone was run out of the NBA by his players. Petino who is supposed to be a players coach was not an effective NBA coach. So who really knows what it takes to coach in the NBA.

Sloan is more like Sampson for sure but he has hung on in a franchise that doesn't have the bucks to really compete for top talent. Chicago has more bucks but their management has always been somewhat flaky.

It seems like only a matter of time until Kelvin Sampson gets an NBA job. Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo says that both the Cavs and Clippers have inquired about him.

I agree. He screwed us over. He can go to hell.

I have no idea why any real Sooner fan would care about him anymore, much less wish him well. (I do understand about his family though, they seem nice)

So someone that made an extra phone call per week to recruits should go to hell?

I guess I'm not a real sooner fan then, since I have moved on.

I think most people, other than the one's sitting at the kids table, have moved on.

Perhaps you should use your username as self-instruction.

I don't think so but it was more than an extra phone call per week. It was the arrogant attitude that went along with it. If he'd have manned up from the get go I think some feelings wouldn't be as harsh.
Nevertheless, some of the same people who still support Sampson and stick up for him are throwing a kid like Tiny Gallon under the bus in other threads and washing their hands of him.

Personally, I'd give kids the pass before the adults. The adults are the ones screwing up high school, AAU and college basketball, not the kids.

I think my point was Sampson has been gone for over 4 years. My suggestion was that sane people would have moved on and not be hoping he goes to hell. The people ripping on Tiny should also relax, and hopefully in 4 years they will have calmed down. If not, I'll say the same thing about them, and that is that they are idiots, clowns, bozo's, whatever term you want to choose from.

Anyone still holding ill will to a point they get fired up enough to wish he was hell bound needs to get a grip, pull themselves together and re-assess their life. Wishing him well is another story, and that's not what I'm talking about. If an OU fan doesn't want to wish him well, that's fine, that is a reasonable and logical thought process.

ESPN talked about him getting the Clipper job partly due to his relationship with Blake Griffin.
