Kornet

I felt like early in the season Nicole was our most effective player. She was shooting the three like we hoped she would. She looked confident and competed hard. Our lineup was changing on a regular basis due to the early season losses. For whatever reason when Sherri decided on a set lineup that has led to the winning streak she decided that Nicole as well as Derica didn't fit into her plan. I don't understand why she made that decision. Obviously it has worked, good winning streak, improved play by Gioya K-K and Maddie. I think that killed Nicole's game, confidence, hopefully not a bad attitude. As a former coach myself, Derica would have a heat check every game. She has gone many minutes and halves without touching the floor. She is to streaky of a shooter not to get her some shots each half. She has shown us in the past she can get on a roll. We certainly go through stretches when we struggle to score. Heat check time to me for Derica! Since we aren't at practice we cant be sure but it sure looks to me like it wasn't anything more than a coaching decision. It has worked for the team, but certainly hurt the production of Nicole and Derica. Seems to have had a negative effect as well on the freshman Williams.

Excellent post!

Nicole is a good player. She's a tough defender, but I don't believe she can defend the block like Sharane and she's not even in Maddie or Petyon's atmosphere on defending 2's and 3s. Those are elite defenders, they close down passing lanes with best, they play on the ball with the best and they close out on shooters, with the best.

I also don't see where Nicole fits in the offense. Do you want to take the ball out of Gioya or Maddies hands for a step back three? She is a good shooter when she gets going, I think saying she is "better" than Maddie though is a big stretch. Maddie has shot around 50% ever since she started here and is shooting 55% from 3.

Not enough is made of her efficiency in the Offense. She fits so well with Gioya and the rest of the team- she is one of the best passers in the country, her and Peyton are elite defenders, she is our second best scorer/creator and she doesn't need the ball to be effective. A crucial part to the this team, because any shot taken from Gioya, is a real mistake- Gioya is one of the best scorers in the country with strength, speed and power- she can finish in the Trees with the best of them and if you sag, she'll hit the 3. Gioya, needs the ball to be effective- and it we want to win, we will give it to her. I think Nicole is a good college basketball player, but she too needs volume- you want to give her shots over one of the best pure scorers to ever attend Oklahoma? Not to mention the rest of the top 6 players?

We have lost one (fluke of a) game where both Maddie and Gioya have played extended minutes, and thats not a fluke- They are our two best players and they make us a top tier team. In closing, Nicole will have another big game at Oklahoma, she'll go out and catch fire and score 20 like it was nothing, but your giving up a lot to allow for that to happen IMO.

I think Laneisha, will be a good player once she finds a role, I think the coaches see that- So she need minutes. Peyton scored 16 pts last night and you didn't even notice, she's a scrapper- a critical piece- needs/deserves lots of minutes. You can't play Nicole at 1 or 5- Sharane, is a unsung- big bodied- physical defender- Watch the offensive players she guards, they are absolutely frustrated at the end of the game- needs minutes. And when Maddie plays 4 we are every bit as dynamic as Uconn, a team that can beat you in SO many ways- NEEDS MINUTES. Gioya- without saying- NEEDS MINUTES. So I personally don't see where Nicole fits- She's a good player, not a great fit IMO.

I think that Sherri is going with her best defensive team. We have a couple of pretty solid scorers. Then, we have some people who can contribute to the scoring, but they often do it with defense as well as offense. Then, we have Kornet.

I think Nicole has been pulled primarily because she is too easy for her opponent to get around. The person that she is guarding often seems to get layups when they have spent fifteen minutes not being able to get to the rim until Nicole enters the game. She has a tendency to follow the ball rather than her player, often resulting in being out of position to cover her player. I think she does it because she is trying to make something happen. But, she hurts the defense.

Last night was somewhat indicative. We had a nine-point lead. We subbed Nicole. She had a foul and a turnover, missed a shot. But, suddenly, Texas, who had been having difficulty getting to the rim, got two straight layups in 53 seconds. Then, Nicole committed her charge, resulting in her being pulled. Texas now hit a jump shot, and the lead was three. This entire thing lasted 1:15. That has happened too often. We keep someone at bay. Nicole enters, and they get to the rim. Texas had 24 points in 18:27. Then, they had nine in 1:15.

Good explanation.

I agree with a lot of what you said however, we only have one elite defender and that's Sharane. IMO

Sharane is great. Not saying that, you might be right. But who beats Maddie and Peyton off the dribble? Rarely happens. And do you pay attention to the turnovers, tipped balls, jump balls, block shots and the hands in shooters faces that Maddie and Peyton contribute. They are everywhere and blessed with GREAT HANDS. Maddie absolutely shrinks the court with her length/athleticism combination. Trims it down to nothing.

Yes.

Both Peyton and Maddie are good defenders. But, they are both behind Sharane and Gioya. In fact, I would say Gabbi, Peyton, and Maddie are about equal on the defensive end. Maddie had a really good first half last night and a poor second half on offense. We suffered when her scoring stopped at halftime.

I think her position is kind of awkward. She can play the 2/3 spot and that is what she is used to, and strong at. But with having a heavy load of guards Sherri prefers her at the 4 spot. She isn't used to playing 4 and maybe not as confident there. She has the height to be the 4, but not the knowledge of the position since she played the 2/3 for two years. I think she deserves more playing time and maybe more over LaNesia and T'Ona. I don't see her transferring. I think she is too close to a lot of the players. And being a senior next year, it's her turn to step up and be a leader. Just my opinion tho.

Rewatch that half if you can. They quit getting her the ball- number 1, number 2, the refs made some horrid calls that took her out of the game. number 3, Kaylon is stout at running the Pick and Roll, Vivi needs some work and Vivi played a lot of that second half. Vivi doesn't set the pick right sometimes, and Maddie as well as Gioya both suffered from it. Also, this time they mixed up there defense on the picks well- sometimes they went through them, sometimes they went under. When they go under, Maddie needs to learn to rip it. Something I am sure she will figure out, she is a freshman after all....

Are we watching the same game on Defense however? I feel not. Peyton and Maddie are EVERYWHERE!? Maddie guards 4 positions!!??? Never gets beat off the dribble enless she's shifting on a pass, and who other than Peyton causes more disruption. Need to pay more attention I feel Norm, but you entitled to your opinion.

I guess we'll see who makes the all conference defensive team and who doesn't.

Not sure exactly which players we're disagreeing on, Norm. I was just responding to a post from Sooners4Life.

Let's agree to disagree until the all conference defensive team is announced. If anyone other than Sharane makes the team, I will gladly say I didn't know what I was talking about and you did. Deal?

Lol Deal Norm. No Harm intended- its all in good procrastination of things I should be doing aside from posting on OUHoops. But, fun it is. lol Lets get bk in the win column eh?

Would it not be possible for two of those Sooners to make the team?
