Last four years in Big 12 play

It’s an appropriate record for the interest and support of OU basketball

MBB is essentially an Olympic sport here

A small passionate following of about 500-1,000

Because the AD has treated it as such. Catering solely to football is what caused this. Also, keeping Kruger this year was not a good move, either. He will leave OU worse than when he got here.

I agree. It all starts at the top and you can’t have a championship caliber program when the leadership is indifferent. It’s depressing how much they don’t care about the basketball program.

I'm not satisfied with "less than mediocre" results in conference play, but I don't even get worked up about it anymore. It's beaten a few of us down now for four seasons when all you can do is take a deep breathe and move on to the next one. It isn't going to change anytime soon.

I'm as down on Lon as anybody, but he's got a lot of work to do if he wants to recreate the tireyard fire left behind by Capel. We're a long way from that mess.

Yup, lower your expectations. We're not as good as we thought we'd be or hoped to be. We're just ok.
Maybe next year.

Do you suggest that joe c pays for a new arena by himself? Do you expect joe c to bribe fans to come to the games? This program needs a lot more support from the fans, not joe c.

Your last sentence has to be a troll, right?

76-77 in his 8+ years here, and that is including a 4 year stretch with Buddy and Isaiah going 47-25. OU bball is what is what it is at this point: mediocre/bottom half of the conference for the foreseeable future.

For anyone interested here is OU's conference record under Kruger in descending order:

5-13
11-7
12-6
12-6
12-6
5-13
8-10
7-11
4-5

No. It isn't. OU has gotten to a point where the ADs office does not care about either basketball program. So yes, the program may be worse off than when Lon got here. The mediocre results since the Final Four year have made things worse. The fans here respond to winning; having a blue-blood football program does that. Being average does not fly well with OU fans.

This is exactly correct. Especially the last four sentences.

Guess that depends on how long Lon stays...I don't think Lon will stick around much longer, unless OU throws lots of $$$ his way

Hopefully he kept his house in Vegas and he and the wife are missing it.

Be careful what you wish for. If you think it'll be easy to find a coach who's consistently better than Lon Kruger and is willing to come to OU, you may be in for a rude awakening.

Also, lots of folks were eager for Sampson to leave and now we have lengthy threads praising him to the skies.

Lots of folks also supported Capel until and even after he was finally run out of town.
Don't let fear blind you to what's happening right in front of your eyes.

Believe me, I'm not fearful. I just don't kid myself that Hall of Fame coaches grow on trees. I'm a big fan of Joe C., but I haven't forgotten that he's the one who hired Capel.

Like I said, just be careful what you wish for.

Yea I think part of this debate, at least for me, has less to do with what a coach has accomplished and more to do with how well they fit at OU.

Coaches aren't guaranteed to win just anywhere, even if they are a good coach. There are certain exceptions to that, kind of like Bob Knight taking a Texas Tech program that sucked for a few centuries and made them competitive. But Bob Knight is at the top of his profession.

So I would be looking at people that have a style that fits at OU, would understand how to recruit at OU, know how to put a team together at OU, etc. I always felt like Lon and Capel were more interested in signing the best available player instead of filling needs with players who can contribute right now.

The reason I bring that up is... when compared to Lon you could throw out a lot of names and loyalists would say "Lon has won more games", "Lon has been to a Final Four", "Lon has done X, Y, and Z"... but that doesn't make Lon a better fit in Norman.

Does that make sense at all?
