I rewatched the Iowa State game, and I was particularly trying to analyze Manyang's play. His biggest stretch of minutes came at the end of the first half. He subs in for Lattin at about the 6min mark of the first half and subs out with 1 min left. Here is a sort of a play-by-play on offense and defense that specifically involve Manyang:
- Manyang offensive rebound that leads to a Buddy Three
- Good defense on McKay, alters shot but is called for a questionable foul. McKay makes 1/2
- Iowa State player goes up for a shot, Manyang contests, and Iowa State throws it out of bounds- Manyang forces turnover
- Got lost on pick that leads to an open dunk by McKay, Woodard fouls. McKay makes 2/2
- Breaks up pass on defense (would have been an open layup for Iowa State). Instead, it leads to a transition layup by Woodard on the other end
- Blocks shot that leads to an open transition three but James misses
- Plays help defense on Niang, alters shot, but somehow Niang rainbows it in from almost over the backboard.
Iowa State scores 7 points during Manyang's 5:30 stretch of playing time. It's interesting to note that we "go small" while Manyang is in with 4 guards and Manyang -- James being the fourth guard. We did this in the second half as well with Lattin when Spangler got hurt.
There were a couple of bad plays -- he has trouble with the pick and roll which is probably why he is not playing as much, but for the most part, he played really well. Iowa State had a tough time getting good looks while he was in. After looking at this, I was surprised that Manyang did not play one minute in the second half (I think).
Now, I am not questioning Lon at all -- I am positive that I am missing a lot of things; I am no expert. And with how Spangler and Lattin are playing lately, it makes it hard to take away minutes from them.
I hope Manyang starts to see a few more minutes. We need Spangler to be fresh at the end of the year. Hopefully, he works hard in practice on the small things he isn't doing right.
