OT: Football Talk

I mean you are acting like the oline was healthy this year as well. It wasn’t even close to healthy
But go back to any preseason pod or article and it was pretty much universally agreed that the line was the biggest weakness on the team, even before anyone got hurt. The injuries just meant we replaced mediocre players with other mediocre players. Maybe they were slight downgrades, but not like we went from all conference guys to high school players.

lol wow
Such amazing logic

I have him blocked, but I see that now. Having said that, I stand by my arguing with a wall stance.

The day of Riley's first game at OU, he had Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray, Sterling Shepard, Samaje Perine, Joe Mixon, Rodney Anderson, Mark Andrews, and Dede Westbrook on the roster. And not just on the roster, but all but Rodney and Kyler were contributing in a big way from that first season (i.e. not developed).

I don't think a QB-less team with Mims and Farooq is even remotely comparable.
Mims, Gray, Willis, three future NFL offensive linemen, and Brent was able to bring in a very good QB. That roster wasn’t as good as the one you mentioned, you’re absolutely right. But it was a lot better than where the offensive roster is now. We may never see as much offensive talent as we had in 2017-18. Those were arguably the best offenses in the history of college football. But even though the offense wasn’t as good his final three years, it was still very good. There is no reason it should have gotten this bad, this quickly, injuries or not. And don’t forget … we were fully healthy at quarterback all season, and got awful play due in part to Arnold flopping, Brent hiring a terrible OC, and the team not having a decent QB coach. And it’s hard to understand how guys like Murray and Finley still have jobs. If they aren’t forced out or told to seek other opportunities, it will be another sign Brent hasn’t learned from his mistakes.

Sooner04 is right, there is no use arguing with someone who doesn’t even try to make a cogent argument.
Your post was idiotic

Your reasoning is that the injuries don’t really matter because it was the weakest part of the offense already.

That is one of the dumbest things I e ever seen on a message board

If you're up in arms about a glorified scrimmage like this, you need a reality check. The season was terrible, but this game couldn't have possibly meant less. Bowl games don't matter anymore, especially when your QB and playcaller aren't even with the team. Not to mention Stutsman, Bowman, and our first two strings of pass catchers. Bowl games had been trending toward irrelevance for years, but the Bob Stoops game against Oregon was the final nail in the coffin.

in a macro sense...no the game didn't mean anything.
to sooner fans who want a win every time the team steps on the field....it showed nothing has changed in the time the regular season ended.
questionable coaching decisions continued that show sooner fans that even tho a few changes have been made.....the problems are with bv who will still be here next season.
i have hope that the offense will be much better next season. but i have no confidence in bv's leadership/decision making/coaching....and losing to navy only reinforced that lack of confidence.

I’ll defer to Gabe when it comes to the health of our line and what our best unit is. His comment on the pod was that we were as healthy as you could possibly hope for this time of season and that with this group available against this opponent, there was no reason why we shouldn’t be able to go out and have our way offensively. Instead, we went 8 straight scoreless possessions after scoring the first two times we had the ball, and outside of the long TD run, our backs averaged about 3.6 per carry against an undersized service academy defense that got gashed on the ground by the good or decent teams on their schedule.
sure but with the 2 starting OT's (and best linemen ) out for the game ..

The OL was always expected to be the weakness of the team, and it was even worse than expected. Arnold was running for his life against teams like Temple and Houston. It was horrifying.

A lot of the issues were putting our faith in Arnold, which didn't work out, but made sense at the time. I also have a hard time faulting our WR room when we had 1-5 go down, though I would have liked to see more production by season's end from the young guys. When healthy, the RB room is not overwhelming but more than enough.

The OL, though...that was unforgivable. We have to find a new coach or put more resources into it. We clearly did based on our HS recruiting this year, but I would have liked to see that supplemented with a top-notch transfer portal guy or two. I think Arbuckle and Mateer are good enough if the defense continues on this trajectory, but BV's job will depend on the OL. SL underwhelmed, but he was also fed to the wolves with this roster. Nobody was going to succeed with this year's team.

Again, you are acting like the OL was healthy

I don't see any logic in crediting Riley for Brent landing Gabriel. That was based on Brent's OC hire. Riley left a completely empty QB room.

Gray had 37 carries for 145 yards in conference play the year prior. Lebby saved his career. At best, Gray would have been RB4 on the team Riley inherited, and that's not even a guarantee. He's run for 73 yards for his entire NFL career and is likely on his way out of the league. He was a good back, but much closer to our current group than Joe Mixon.

Brayden Willis had played 4 years of college football and had 484 receiving yards, with his season-high being 177 yards. He more than doubled that in one year with Lebby. I believe he's gone on to record exactly 0 catches in the NFL.

If we brought in a guy that averaged 3.9 YPC in the Big 12 and a TE whose career high was 177 yards receiving, you'd be mercilessly mocking our transfer portal additions right now.

For reference, Bauer Sharpe had 324 yards this year, which is almost double what Willis had ever done in a season under Riley. If not for a COVID year, Willis would have graduated with similar career receiving numbers, and it took him 4 years to do it.

WTH is going on.
Alley leaving is as bad of a betrayal as riley

No loyalty. Don’t let the door hit you on the way out

Losing the glorified scrimmage bowl game didn't phase me.

The optics of Alley getting poached by WVU concerned me, and there may be more troubling stuff that comes out later, but he should be easily replaced. This has always been BV's defense, and it's completely understandable if he wants to go elsewhere where he can actually get credit. Still not overly concerned.

Losing Lewis Carter to the portal is the most troubling to me of all the events that have happened these past few days. Maybe I overestimated him and he wasn't a major part of the plans next year, but I thought he would be a key player with the departure of Stutsman. If there is any position that playing under BV makes sense, it's LB. I'll be watching the events that unfold in the coming days. Hopefully things stabilize quickly.

I really hope this football mess doesn’t spill over to basketball somehow. Moser is doing a very good job with this years team so far. I think this could be the start of an upward projectory for OU basketball if Moser makes the tournament. I would absolutely hate for that to be thwarted because the athletics department is in shambles cause OU football is a sinking ship.
