Marcus smart just hit a fan!

What was said absolutely matters.

Fans should not have free reign to say whatever they want to players. Shouldn't be allowed to say anything you wouldn't say to their faces if you saw them on the street.

It should not matter in what happens to smart

Good luck with that.

In a perfect world, perhaps -- and if it's established that the fan used a racist epithet, I'd be all for Tech 86'ing him from their arena permanently. But Smart's behavior cannot be condoned, no matter what the fan said. Thousands of college basketball players have put up with fan nonsense and not lost their cool, and you can rest assured that many of the remarks shouted over the years have been offensive in one way or another.

But how many college players have gone up in the stands and attacked one of those fans?

Again, I have no defense of the fan if he crossed a line, but there's no defending Smart's behavior either.

Let's not dramatize this. He didn't "attack" the fan. Ron Artest attacked fans. Smart got up and didn't even manage to push an old man over.

It may be more than he said she said when the smoke clears. There were dozens of fans and players close enough to hear what the guy said, not to mention the baseline official. I, for one, will be anxious to see how this turns out.

One thing is for sure, it overshadowed a great OU win tonight and became the news everyone wants to talk about now.

I just figured it might be too loud to really hear what was said... But as you said, who knows once the smoke clears. And I agree it has overshadowed a great Saturday for Basketball, especially our great W over the underachieving Baylor Bears!

Anyone remember several years ago when the Tech fans were dropping red ink on our football players when they came thru the tunnel? I have video of it somewhere.

Good point. He had ESPN rush to talk to him about how often he falls on his butt. If he wanted to get back at that guy I'm sure he could have found plenty of people willing to interview him on the topic. That said, I don't believe he was thinking. I think it was an emotional moment in the game and he just lost control.

And I think most people will agree that he needs to be suspended for doing so. I might be mistaken, but I think teaching people how to resolve conflicts appropriately is one of the goals of higher education.

Look at the lady to Smart's left that is clapping in his face. What would go through your mind as an adult to act that way?

Suprised no is bringing up when Thomas (can't remember his first name, was #0) went into the stands at GIA.

It doesn't matter one damn bit what the fan said. Smarts behavior is completely unacceptable and he should've been immediately ejected. He should be suspended for the rest of the season for this. Should the fan be held accountable? Yes. However, no matter what he said, smart or any player can't assault fans in any way. Smart should be suspended for 4-5 games, if not the season.

Not for lack of trying; the fan (who's probably in his 50s, which doesn't make him old) very probably got held up by the fans behind him.

Pointless semantics aside, perhaps you can tell me the last time you saw a college player do what Smart did tonight.

I'm 23, anything above 30 I consider old. ;)

Saw Legarrete Blount sucker punch a dude once. Regardless, this was no attack, unless you're into British tabloids then it might be considered one.

Tech fans are saying the guy is known to be a heckler but always keeps it clean.

Mitigating circumstances are taken into account when deciding punishments in the criminal justice system, I see no reason not to here.

If the guy said "scoreboard" or "you suck, Marcus", I think Smart's punishment should be much more severe than if he crossed a line, which using the N word would obviously be. (Other examples would be saying something about sick, dead, or disabled family members, or things of that nature).

Regardless, Marcus should have handled it better no matter what was said. But I also absolutely detest anti-social behavior by fans, something that has become commonplace in the age of social media.

So, what are you saying? If a player is only moderately offended, he can not go into the stands and assault a fan. But, if a player is severely offended, he can go into the stands and assault a fan. Or, is it that the degree the player was offended should have some bearing on the punishment for going into the stands and assaulting a fan.

Sorry, players can not go into the stands and assault fans. Period. End of story.

Well, this incident helped the site set a new online users record. It got over 700. Previous record was 420 I think. So there's that.

after watching the replay several times and in slow-mo, there is no indication the guy said anything racial.. you also cant tell what marcus said to the official... I will say that as marcus steps up to the man.. the guys says something to the effect of "you're not my type" but the man also raises his hand near marcus' face as he says that.. I could totally see marcus react to the hand raise in an extinctive sel defense manner with a shove... bottom line, he still should've never stepped to the man in the first place...
