Marcus smart just hit a fan!

If the N word was used that is horrible. BUT, you can not react like Smart did. No chance this would be the first player to have a racial slur yelled at them. It is deplorable (if true) but you CAN NOT go into the stands and shove the guy. Just walk away and make your millions in the NBA. Now, most likely, he has cost himself a ton of cash.

What was said absolutely matters.

Fans should not have free reign to say whatever they want to players. Shouldn't be allowed to say anything you wouldn't say to their faces if you saw them on the street.

What was said matters in the case of deciding what consequences the fan will face. It has much less to do with Marcus Smart's consequences.

A couple of situations come to mind:

1) Remember when Roy Williams got all bent out of shape when on of his players fell at the north end of the court? I can't remember the exact situation.

2) There was an incident with a Texas player at GIA several years ago. I can't remember the particulars about that, either.

I think it was Rex Walters; when he was on the ground, a student got in his face.

Texas player went to save the ball and hit a pregnant OSU fan. A pushing match ensued. Why a pregnant lady was on the front row; I have no idea. How an OSU fan got pregnant; she must of had a nice wool coat.

I am not sure it should matter with regards to Marcus Smart's punishment, but it should certainly matter with regards to that man's season tickets. I am not sure he should be attending games if the allegations that he called Smart an N-word are true. A grown man should know better than that.

Although I do want to hear Marcus' side of things, I don't think it changes what happens to him or should it... As a leader and a young man in his position you have to be above all that. Think about all the names Jackie Robinson was called (not condoning racism that happened there); but the only reaction he gave was being motivated to play better. At the end of the day, we will never truly know what happened because it will be he said, she said stuff... All we will know is that Marcus Smart went banana's foster and shoved a fan. He should be suspended for at least a couple of games.

banana's foster? what is that?

Having said that, I'm technically considered a minority (Jewish) and if someone made an anti-semitic remark to me when I was 20....I'm not sure I wouldn't try and deck someone. I'm older now, but I can understand, to a degree, how that would set someone off. Still, you have to understand that when you're a big time athlete....people are going to be ugly to you. You have to try your best and walk away.

Agree with the second paragraph. Does not excuse his action but I can at least fathom that response. If what everyone thinks was said actually happened, hope the bigot gets outed.

It's not as though Smart's only options were to attack the guy or just take it. Smart is one of the most visible athletes in college basketball if he had decided to start a discussion about racial abuse in college arenas he would certainly be given a platform to do so.

Good luck with that.

In a perfect world, perhaps -- and if it's established that the fan used a racist epithet, I'd be all for Tech 86'ing him from their arena permanently. But Smart's behavior cannot be condoned, no matter what the fan said. Thousands of college basketball players have put up with fan nonsense and not lost their cool, and you can rest assured that many of the remarks shouted over the years have been offensive in one way or another.

But how many college players have gone up in the stands and attacked one of those fans?

Again, I have no defense of the fan if he crossed a line, but there's no defending Smart's behavior either.

It may be more than he said she said when the smoke clears. There were dozens of fans and players close enough to hear what the guy said, not to mention the baseline official. I, for one, will be anxious to see how this turns out.

One thing is for sure, it overshadowed a great OU win tonight and became the news everyone wants to talk about now.

Good point. He had ESPN rush to talk to him about how often he falls on his butt. If he wanted to get back at that guy I'm sure he could have found plenty of people willing to interview him on the topic. That said, I don't believe he was thinking. I think it was an emotional moment in the game and he just lost control.

Great OU wins are so common these days.
