McGusty and Young Earn Preseason Big 12 Honors

I've always thought preseason awards to be a strange concept. But if they're going to have them, I'm happy to see Sooner players included.

Here are my comments after reading the article:

1. Didn't Christian James get some pre-season recognition last year? It supports skyvue's contention that pre-season awards don't mean much.

2. McDonald's must not have had an AA game when Alvan Adams was in HS. He would have made it.

3. I actually refereed a game when Tommy Mason-Griffin was in HS. He was a stud but I could tell he was a punk. I had a friend who was a security guard where I worked whose son was a teammate with TMG and Tiny Gallon. Gallon was really a pretty good kid but was young and immature. He was punished for deeds committed by 2-3 adults in his life.

4. On a positive note, congrats to both McGusty and Young for the recognition. I was a little surprised Odomes didn't get an honorable mention.... I guess they couldn't recognize 2 returning players from a 9th place team. Of course I'm biased.

5. Will Manek earn some newcomer recognition by the end of the season?

Agreed. Strange custom that has been around for a long time.

Preseason polls/rankings are in the same category. The primary purpose seems to be to sell newspapers and magazines, and to drum-up interest in the upcoming season. It gives fans and so-called journalists something to talk and write about.

Congrats to the OU players for the recognition. Hopefully, it will be earned during the actual season.

If there is an "all-newcomer" or "all-freshman" team in the B12 at the end of the season, then both TY and Manek have the potential to gain that recognition.

Odomes is motivated as well. Cant wait for the season to start

For anyone that's gone to preseason practices, how's Mcgusty progressing? He had a great year last year, but in Australia he seemed to camp out behind the 3 point line and wait for somebody to pass it to him. Part of what made him effective last year was he would take it to the rack. Is he still doing that?

I have seen only the practice on the 13th and vids in August but one of my impressions is Kam needs to work on his shooting mechanics. He is very talented with his feet and athleticism but behind the line or at the ff line he has a lot of room to improve. Trae sat out practice but it didn't appear serious.
