McNeace Injury

Wow. That just blows my mind. I don’t understand that at all. I can see how that would be terribly frustrating for the coaches and the other players. How can you trust a guy that has basically quit?

He is a great kid and will do well in life. He absolutely has the talent to play professionally.
I will stick with my statement.

For whatever reason at this point he just wants to sit on the bench and laugh joke with the guys and the fans. Even when he is in the game he is looking into the stands and even pointing to guys on occasion. It is mind boggling.
As Wichita says LK never throws a guy under the bus but there have been several quotes about we will see etc. He is saying the guy was healthy physically but not ready to play.
Also a big comment by LK after getting in the dance about how we have to be ready to play and play harder etc. This is what has caused the team to be so frustrating for us. It is difficult to imagine why as a group they don't compete better.

Thanks for the info.

This is one of the problems with recruiting guys who didn't play much in HS (i.e., projects). You never know if they have the mental makeup to be a college player.

I don't understand why we are recruiting so many projects. I would consider Lattin a project too and he never really panned out. Freeman, Polla, Kuath, Manyang, etc., need I go on?

Lattin was top 150 out of Hs & started on the final 4 team. Manyang was the #2 juco and looked like he was going to be pretty good until something happened. I’ll give you the others but no one knows yet on Kuath.

Hard to build the right culture when you let guys behave that way. I know he isn't playing as much, but he is playing, and he is still on the team. Other kids see that. When I hear stuff like this, it's easy to see why we've been soft, not always played hard, and had chemistry issues the past 3 seasons.

Then what about the reports that Konate could’ve came back but doesn’t want to risk injury for the draft?

Lattin never improved so I guess that falls more on coaching.

As for Manyang, what qualifies for pretty good? I'm getting old so my memory isn't what it used to be but I don't recall him doing much.

Lattin got better but the rumor was he never worked on his own, which is a player fail.

Manyang has a foot issue his year at OU then got arrested and was kicked off the team. Averaged 13.5 & 8 on a WAC team.

Ah, then I stand corrected on Manyang. Maybe he could be considered a project due to character issues? Or, maybe in fairness to him, that was just an isolated incident.

Manyang is very tall. He was a dreadful basketball player for us. He had no clue how to play team defense. None. When I read posts that he could've been a difference maker I want to crawl into the sewers and scream at the rats.

That is all.

lattin is far from a project ... he may have been the same player his last 3 years but he is also the all time leader in blocked shots ..

lattin improved a ton year 1 to year 2 .... then was that same player the rest of the way

How could you know? He battle the only year he played at OU with a foot injury & only played 8 mins a game.

I heard he was a knucklehead but hopefully has changed since then.

FWIW, on the road trip to Lubbock in 2016, I had a very nice conversation with Akolda Manyang in the lobby of the team hotel several hours before the game. We were both enjoying the free lemonade the hotel provided near the check-in desk. We chatted for a bit more than 5 minutes, as we were the only two people in the lobby at the time, other than the hotel employee at the front desk. Akolda seemed to be a very nice young man, and was happy to converse with a Sooner fan. He came across as someone with a great attitude about his coaches and teammates. As I am 5'8" tall,I was forced to straighten my posture to look up at the 7' tall Akolda as we talked. I had high hopes for Akolda in the next season, but was severely disappointed when the following sequence of events happened ...

Akolda's moment in the spotlight (2016 1st round NCAA Tournament game):

After that, tragedy struck and Akolda was gone:

Then in June 2016, the final straw:

Thankfully, Akolda never gave up and played his senior year ...

I also add my THANKS to vbdad and the information he provides about the team. Thank you.

It’s insane to me, and a telling glimpse into the soft culture at OU basketball, that McNeace just wants to hang out on the bench his senior year and be a cheerleader. The team NEEDS him and he has checked out. Unbelievable.

If this is an accurate assessment then it represents the antithesis of sportsmanship and teamsmanship.

If Muni isn't busting his butt to play, that is clearly a problem and something he deserves to be criticized for. But I notice a lot of the anti-Lon crew using this as an example of lack of leadership, discipline, and accountability in the program. To those folks, I would ask -- is it worse than Raymond and Brown getting booted from the program because they wouldn't stop smoking dope? Or guys like Lavender and Foust generally acting like fools and eventually leaving the program? Was the discipline lacking then? If so, does that staff deserve any blame, or is that solely reserved for Lon in this situation?

These are KIDS. We establish this fiction that they are adults at 18 and that isn't even close to being the case. The human male's pre-frontal cortex (pfc) doesn't mature until 26-28 years of age. This means their logic and reasoning control center isn't up and running as it should be and their thoughts/drives are dominated by emotions and memories. Their limbic system dominates over the minimal input of the pfc so adrenaline and hormones play a key component in their actions.

You can rely on little them doing being reliable other than their unreliability.
