Most of these, I saw, but they're all great to recall.

Of course, the most memorable one for us Sooner freshmen in '77 was the game that year around Feb. 1. It was the first-ever LNC sellout, and OU pulled off a miraculous rally to win it, 66-63.

But, the one the year before, in front of a pretty good crowd on a Saturday night, was amazing in other ways. The '76 OU team was woefully small and inexperienced, yet they whipped a nationally ranked MU team that was an overtime away from the Final Four later that season. OU won by 11, and as I recall, never trailed in the game. Still have a mental picture of freshman John McCullough getting open all night on the baseline for easy jumpers.

The game in my senior year, February of '80, was fun in that OU took out the overhyped Steve Stipanovich and Co. It was also a game that typified Big 8 officiating - they let Norm Stewart take forever to make substitutions after his players fouled out trying to cut in the OU lead by fouling to stop the clock.

I had to miss it, but the game in '87 was great because OU won it on a last-second shot by Tim McCalister. I really enjoyed the '88 game when OU destroyed the preseason Big 8 favorites (OU was picked a distant third). Stacey King went for 40 that day, and Tony Martin just posterized a Mizzou guard named Lee Coward late in the game on a fast break dunk of the "windmill" variety.

Maybe the wildest one of all, though, happened when I was living in Albuquerque the first time. That was the "no matter how terrible the officiating is" game in '89. I remember that OU got down something like 22-5 before roaring back after the "T" on Billy Tubbs. I still have that one on VHS, and I'm SO glad I taped it while at a game in Albuquerque that night.

The game in '90 was also great because OU blasted the No. 1-ranked Tigers (then followed it up by crushing the hated Beakers, who had just ascended to No. 1). I still have both of those games on VHS.

My last OU-MU game to see in person was in Blake Griffin's freshman year. That was a really good game, on a really cold day, and it was my only chance to see the guys play live that year.

This is probably my favorite Tubbs in-game story. Honestly, I think Missouri was OU's biggest basketball rival for a long time. I hated to see them leave the conference.

I also have that Mizzou game on tape. It never gets old!! Hightower immediately gives Tubbs the "T" after he said that...it was so awesome and was exactly how Tubbs rolled in those days. Now what made it even nicer was the fact we then went on a run and ended up beating their a$$e$! During a span of 5 years or so, Mizzou had some great teams and Tubbs & Norm seemed to enjoy squawking at each other. Fun times.

Thanks for bringing back those great memories. Mizzou has a deep basketball tradition, yet OU leads the all-time series 112-97. Also, OU has been to four Final-4s, while Mizzou is still looking to make their first trip to the FF.

Besides all the great games played with Mizzou in the LNC, there were also memorable games played in the post season. During the Sooner’s run to the Final-4 in 2002, the final step was the Elite-8 victory over Mizzou in San Jose. Back during my “traveler” days, I had the good fortune to see all these games in person:

2002 NCAA Tournament (OU was ranked #3)
> 1st Round in Dallas: OU defeats unranked Illinois-Chicago 71-63
> 2nd Round in Dallas: OU defeats #22 ranked Xavier 78-65
> Sweet-16 in San Jose: OU defeats #7 ranked Arizona 88-67
> Elite-8 in San Jose: OU defeats unranked Mizzou 81-75

I also remember the the quarterfinal game at the 2000 Big-12 Tournament at Kemper Arena, when a freshman named Hollis Price hit both ends of a pressure-packed 1-and-1 to send the game with Mizzou into overtime. OU won that night in Kansas City 84-80. All the wins over Mizzou in Kansas City were memorable. Based on my travels, Mizzou has the worst behaved basketball fans in the country. (As an aside, Colorado has the worst football fans.)

Isn't that Norm Stewart's favorite official, Jim Bain, with the whistle in his mouth?

He was Stormin' Norman's secret weapon when OU (or anyone for that matter) played Mizzou in Columbia.

OU football played at Missouri in 2002 the Fall after OU beat Mizzou to advance to the Final Four. Mizzou had a little tv booth set up on the field right in front of the visitor's section. The interview that day was Quin Snyder. Hilariously and predictably, the Sooner fans started chanting Fi-nal Four! Fi-nal Four! To his credit, Snyder just smiled and waved.

I remember watching those epic OU-Mizzou games in the mid/late 1980s.

It seemed like it was almost always a matchup of top 5 teams.

And I definitely remember the "...no matter how bad the officiating is..." game.

:D

Yes, how fitting that Jim Bain is in that picture. I think that was also during the time frame when OU was something like 0 and 30 when Stanley Reynolds was officiating.

I also remember Wayman's freshman year at Missouri when he got either 2 or 3 first half fouls on him and Billy took the air out of the ball in protest. Seems like the final score wound up something like 46-41.

Also remember the famous "Francis the talking mule" quote from Billy about Norm Stewart.

Great fun and great memories.

didn't a little used Jameel Heywood hit a buzzer beater to beat Missouri around 2000ish? That was a good Missouri game.

I liked 2002 beating them in the NCAA Tournament. 98 through 2003 was a great run by Kelvin against Missouri, He won 9 of 10 including 4 wins in the Big 12 Tournament and one win in the NCAA Tournament.
