NCAA Tourney Thread

The charge call killed Iowa St. That was a bad call.
But all Iowa St had to do was control a rebound on the free throw and that game goes OT or Iowa St wins.

The rebound call was questionable too. 95% of the time that is called ISU ball because the Ohio State player hit his arm causing the ball to go out of bounds. The refs generally don't call a foul but instead just award the ball to the defending team.

Ive seen Temple a few times this year and this is BY FAR the most consistent I've seen them play.

NICE job and NICE coaching. Boy, some teams really picked up their game in the tourney this year.

They're making a big deal about whether the tOSU defender was in the restricted area or not. My issue with the call was that it looked like the offensive player was in the air before the defender had position established.

I was wondering if he got the shot off before there was contact. Maybe that rule has been changed too.

This is true except for on that play there was no foul. They could have called it out of bounds on Ohio st though. Still just grab the ball Iowa st.

has this season been Self's best coaching or his worst?

I havent seen this team be particularly dominating all season long and I am left trying to figure out if they actually lack talent or if they just don't play as well together as past gawk teams.

I still dont think I want them to lose to UNC of all teams.

The officiating today is reprehensible. Home calls for Ohio st, ku, and Indiana. All higher seeds being protected by the officiating. It's predetermined. There is no level playing field and the players are only allowed to impact the game if they're wearing the right jersey.

oh please. :facepalm

Like whatever Self told his kids in the locker room. They have definitely come out to play ball in the second half!! The ball movement and decisions have been 110% better and they actually look like a worthy team now.

No, you just need the talent to win the title.

White and Price didn't win the title. They actually ended up losing to a team with a player who played in the NBA

Yeah, I think the teams with the least NBA talent to win the title in the last 20 years are that Duke team and the UCLA O'Bannon team in the 90s.

That Duke team also had Lance Thomas, Miles Plumlee, and a couple guys who haven't finished but have shots to play (Mason Plumlee, Kelly, maybe even Dawkins).

So four guys on active rosters and a couple others who will probably make it at some point is quite a bit when that's maybe the least talented champion in two decades.

Just think...if Kansas doesn't offer late Travis Releford more than likely goes to OU.

And that UCLA team had 5 guys spend at least 1 year in the NBA

Did the Maryland team in the early 2000s have a lot of NBA talent? I only remember 1 or 2 guys but maybe I'm missing someone going only off memory.

They have two guys still in the NBA eleven years later (Chris Wilcox and Steve Blake). Dixon also played in the league for a long time.

Florida Gulf Coast and SDSU in a battle early on.

Precisely. Really the only two formulas anyone has ever used in my lifetime to win a title are to have one or two (or more) high-end NBA talents or a bunch of low-end NBA talent. You might be able to do it another way. Butler came close a couple times, OU came close. Others have come close. But it hasn't happened yet and I doubt it happens this year, as there are only a few teams with legitimate chances, and they all follow one of those two formulas.

Heck, Steve Blake is still in the league (and Wilcox)

And OU's best team was easily the 1988 team IMO and that team had 3 guys who had long NBA careers

He's in Boston, having a career much like Ed Najera's, just a little bit better.

I think the point that you don't need highly rated high school guys still applies, however. I don't think any of those Maryland guys were all that highly recruited (even with Frank Martin's cheating to get Steve Blake), for instance. But you have to either luck into that talent or develop it.
