Need More Talent

The Switzer Center is awesome but why couldn't they have built a large fieldhouse on the South side of the football field for basketball and put the Switzer Center elsewhere? Shows you the priorities.

Joe C wanted to build one a couple years ago but got turned down by the city council. I think the priorities will be on baseball and softball first. But I bet when the SEC move happens a basketball arena will be proposed and probably similar to the one Joe C wanted.

I remember that proposal. I thought it was pretty cool.

I hope you are right.

I think that’s a very outdated take. It shouldn’t take that long in the portal era. Look at that Texas/Tech game last night. Both those teams lost their head coach and both are made up primarily of transfers. It’s very possible to remake a roster and find success in a year or two. Heck, Lon inherited a brutal situation and we were good by year two and really good by year three.

If you mean our Final Four year, wasn’t that in year five? The following year our FF high went south in a hurry when Lon’s team finished 11-20.

I get that coaches have a job to do or the honeymoon could be over before the marriage is consummated with a kiss and a cup of coffee the next morning. But my response was to WT’s suggestion that Porter Moser will not get 3 to 4 years. Anyone who has been around since Joe C arrived at OU in 1998, knows full well that he believes in the coaches he hires and that he is NEVER QUICK to replace them. WTSooner knows that, too.

By year three, we were a 4 or 5 seed, which was remarkable given the disaster that Capel left behind. Capel was fired after five years, two of which were successful due to Blake. That’s why I don’t think Joe C would wait around for five years if we haven’t made the tourney a time or two. Given how fragile our fan support is, we couldn’t afford to be in that position, especially as we transition to the SEC.

I think this will be a moot point because I expect Moser to get things going. We aren’t out of the tournament race this year, and certainly have reason to think we will be better next year.

You are correct about Joe C, but there is a catch. Steady improvement will have to be made. He did hire and fire the baseball coach he got from Virginia Tech, and he wasn't around very long. 3 years maybe? I think that's all he got. That said, there isn't any serious pressure on Moser beyond that steady improvement.

Let's also remember that the last FIVE OU men's basketball coaches have all made it to at least the Sweet 16. I'm not sure any other school can make that claim beyond UCLA and Kansas. At the end of the day, Joe C will give Moser every opportunity to win at OU, and will expect that to eventually happen.

True, I meant within easy walking distance for the students. LNC feels like it's in a remote area. Even the softball field is closer.

Again, it's like basketball is an afterthought.

Not meaning to be a total ass, but aren't you the poster that complains after every game when a poster talks about the refs... and youre talking about new facilities/gym? Do you see it?

This digression re: porter's job security is absurdly silly

He isn't going to get 3-4 years. That isn't the reality of today's world. With recruiting and the Portal, there needs to be improvement as soon as next season.

Plenty of schools had coaching changes this offseason, and lost guys to the Portal. They aren't using it as an excuse, and neither should we.

you clearly havent paid attention to how Joe C treats coaches if you really think he wont get 4 years. Unless we get hammered by NCAA violations

This year was just a rough spot for OU with the guys that all left. Adding Williams talent and Harmon you are looking at a much better roster overall. But we have what we have. I don't see why so many people early on were expecting NCAA tournament with those losses. But based on early recruiting I bet we get a couple more transfers that make OU even better next year. We'll get it going under Moser. This year was just going to be tough.

Those two things are unrelated except in your brain somehow.

You’re spot on, as usual, WF!

I also agree with what Wichita said in his last paragraph. This argument will be a moot point because Porter Moser is not going anywhere.

Lol you are the one setting up this analogy bc you posit that the complaining about the refs happens after every game. While the topic about the facilities and new gym is definitely a topic that has been beat to death on this board. Interesting that you see no similarities

Okie dokie

The LNC is within walking distance (an easy half mile from the dorms). The buses run to and from the dorms to the LNC every game. And, the new softball stadium will be the same distance.

Are you serious, WT? Moser will not be under pressure to leave if he continues to make progress. You know as well as I do that Joe C doesn’t operate that way. If LK got eleven years, PM will get at least half of that number.

NCSooner told us why Porter deserves more time. I see no reason to repeat it.

I literally said their needs to be improvement.

LK got 11 years b/c Joe C. BEGGED Lon to leave Vegas to come save our program. LK got as many years as he wanted out of respect. LK also never missed the NCAA tournament twice in a row at OU. That was my point, we miss this year, and miss again next year, if you don't think the seat gets hot at that point, I don't know what to tell you.

Other than the Capel years, you have to go back to Billy's last two years to find a time when OU basketball missed the Dance in back to back years.

I'm on record as saying I expect more changes from Moser this offseason, largely to stave off the possibility of missing the Dance next year, or not being an improved team.

Yeah. But we aren’t moving on from groves Harkless Gibson noland Bijan hill.

Rick Alston? yes move along.

I agree with you on the two players who aren’t good enough. Problem is Jacob Groves is right there with them.

Moser is committed to playing him along with his brother who is turning out to be a role player and not the focal point that Moser thought. How do you feel Moser should approach that dilemma?

This is true. I think Moser is putting more stock in these two guys than they deserve. Their good games are few and far between in Big 12 play, and what is being defined as a good game is pretty questionable compared to what i'm seeing on other teams around the Big 12. I do think Tanner would be OK off the bench, but I fail to see what Moser loves so much about Jacob. I guess he could grow into some minutes.

I think OU's talent level is so low, and OU fans want to be hopeful, that we are trying to squeeze too much blood out of this turnip. These dudes aren't talented enough to be playing the roles they are. Moser appeared to have hired an all-star recruiting staff. They had a really good first fall class. Now they need to clean some more house and get even more players in here. I'm sure(I hope) Porter can see that. This ain't Loyola.

Your response to NCSooner:

I was simply pointing out that your response that Moser would not get at least 3 years to develop the roster he wants or needs is totally out of character for OU’s AD. Joe C will weigh the circumstances as they apply to Porter Moser, with little or no regard for other coaches.

The mass exodus of OU players at the end of last season was a reality, not an excuse. Moser arrived in Norman facing the monumental tasks of trying to convince freshmen recruits and players on our roster to stay, hiring a staff, and competing for players in the transfer portal. He also found time to embrace students in an effort to improve attendance.

Joe C likes to win games. But, I doubt if the games we have lost this season are even in his rear view mirror. He sees a much bigger picture than fans like us when evaluating the performance of the coaches he hires.

Agree with this. Moser will get time to build a team. Anyone who knows and loves basketball can see he is doing a lot of good things. He also has no home court advantage, not his fault, and he is trying to fix that but needs time.

I was a soph at OU when Tubbs started and sometimes I thought I was the only fan in the LNC. That changed as he started to build a team. I realize it is even more difficult now. Moser doesn’t have to sell it out. He just needs to keep doing what he is doing and add more wins, especially big wins at home, to get more students interested.

On the flip side, will Gibson Hill or Harkless transfer? You know coaches are after them behind the scenes. Harkless and Gibson may not be allowed to move around again.
