Need More Talent

They looked to me as a tired team, but I haven't seen them enough to really tell for sure.
TCU was much much quicker..so it looked

One thing we all know by now. Teams either get better or they regress (because the opposition has gotten better). I watched that first game against TCU when we lost a game we should have won, but certainly didn't play badly. Last night, you could see TCU is a better team than they were a few weeks ago, so that means we got worse.

We were within 3 points of the #1 team on the road with about 10 minutes to play, so we know what we saw last night is not the ceiling. As such, it's hard not to be a bit disappointed. I was hoping this team would be like Kelvin's 1997 team or at least like Billy's 1982 squad...but those teams got better as the year went along.

Well, Lon's Achilles Heel post-Buddy Hield was the month of February. Perhaps we can reverse the trend for this year and have January be the bad month. If we can win in Stillwater, then there is a glimmer of hope. If we don't, I honestly don't know if / when our next win will be.

Yeah. But we aren’t moving on from groves Harkless Gibson noland Bijan hill.

Rick Alston? yes move along.

I said in another thread that I thought Alston was a “honor” ‘ship…in other words moser felt obligated to a degree to bring him to OU. We’ll see how it goes

People really thought we didn't lose much when we lost Harmon and Williams and a couple others. But put those guys on this roster it's a pretty solid team. We don't have that type of athletic ability. It could be a couple years before we get that.

Wasn’t Alston the guy in preseason practices that was a great athlete and really wowing people in practice? Or was that total BS.

Williams was one of the best pure athletes we’ve had. He just didn’t put it all together, whether that was his fault or the staff’s. Harmon, to me, is an average athlete at point guard. He definitely would help this team, but he’s not an extraordinary athlete like Williams.

We definitely need more talent BUT you have to give Moser enough time to get his guys in here......he was hired late and had several guys bolt immediately. He had to fill a roster kind of fast.....you impatient guys crack me up. He will need probably 3 years to get the roster where he wants it or needs it to be.

No way was this year going to be where it needs to be.

He was easily a better scorer than anyone on this roster right now. Manek I could take or leave. He's basically a taller version of Gibson.

I think that’s a very outdated take. It shouldn’t take that long in the portal era. Look at that Texas/Tech game last night. Both those teams lost their head coach and both are made up primarily of transfers. It’s very possible to remake a roster and find success in a year or two. Heck, Lon inherited a brutal situation and we were good by year two and really good by year three.

No one was expecting miracles this season, but the majority of the players on this team are guys Moser brought in. Two are holdovers from the last staff, two were recruited by that staff but have only been coached as college players by Moser's staff (and both of those players are contributing). Every other player (save Big Rick, who is a non-factor) is a player that Moser brought in. So the notion that he doesn't have "his guys" is only partially true.

Admittedly he had to assemble a team on the fly, but in these days of the portal, quickly putting together a solid roster is possible -- not easy but certainly possible (look at Tech and texas, who also have new coaches and who also brought in many transfers). There is no way it should take three or four years.

This team's failures -- poor rebounding, way too many turnovers -- are things that definitely can and should be addressed with solid coaching. But instead of growth and improvement we're seeing a regression. All I hoped for was that Coach Moser would get the most out of this team, however one defines that, and then continue to improve the talent level over the next few years. But I can't honestly say that I think he has so far gotten the most out of this team. If they turn it around, great -- I'm certainly not throwing in the towel -- but right now they have a huge hill to climb.

One thing I will say:

We have had the toughest schedule in the country since conference play started --

Baylor 2x
KU
@Auburn
2x against TCU -- playing like a top 20 team right now
@Texas
@West Virginia
Iowa State
Kansas State

--

We have not played well, but we've also run into a buzz-saw stretch. It wouldn't surprise me to see us go 5-4 or better in the next 9 and end up squeaking into the tournament as a 10 or 11 seed. Shoot, 6-3 gets us back to .500 in the toughest conference in the country and a guaranteed ncaa spot.

2xOSU
WVU
Texas
2x Tech
@KSU
@ISU
@Kansas

Win the remaining home games and pick up one road game, and we're in. We're a good enough team to do that.

He isn't going to get 3-4 years. That isn't the reality of today's world. With recruiting and the Portal, there needs to be improvement as soon as next season.

Plenty of schools had coaching changes this offseason, and lost guys to the Portal. They aren't using it as an excuse, and neither should we.

Are you serious, WT? Moser will not be under pressure to leave if he continues to make progress. You know as well as I do that Joe C doesn’t operate that way. If LK got eleven years, PM will get at least half of that number.

NCSooner told us why Porter deserves more time. I see no reason to repeat it.

The elephant in the room is the need for upgraded facilities. I truly believe that a better arena closer to, if not on, campus would bring more people in and also bring in higher-level recruits. Why would a high level recruit want to play in a 1/4th full dump? I love LNC and its history, but going to a game there is not a pleasant experience.

The school just isn't that serious about basketball or it would find a way to get this done.

The Texas situation is way different than ours....and he brought guys with him that he was already recruiting to Lubbock.....I think you will see Moser make a solid jump in year two....he inherited a gutted roster though and had to build a team in a matter of a couple of months. There have been positives with this group but they definitely have some needs.....I don't think is really fair to start judging him in less than a season. just my opinion.

Give Moser that "year or two"

the LNC is on campus

Lon got us to the tournament in year two, a high seed in gear three, and the Sweet 16 in year four, followed by the FF. So he not only showed progress each year, he had us as a national player. With the portal being what it is now, I think it’s absolutely fair to expect tangible progress and results within two or three years. I expect that will happen, but if it doesn’t, I don’t think he should get a free pass just because three key guys transferred after last season. Two of those guys would have been out of eligibility anyway if not for the Covid year, so it was really just typical roster attrition.

The Switzer Center is awesome but why couldn't they have built a large fieldhouse on the South side of the football field for basketball and put the Switzer Center elsewhere? Shows you the priorities.
