Anyone else see the JR Raymond similarities? IF nothing else he seems to be totally fearless -just like Raymond. I also thought JR looked just as bad as Calvin did when trying to run the point.

I can see it. JR Raymond was a little better at get teammates involved, but that is not a bad comparison.

JR was a more well-rounded player than Calvin as a rebounder, assist-maker, defender, and offensive player, but I think Calvin has a chance to be a better shooter and scorer before he graduates.

Lawrence McKenzie may be a good comparison as far as guards who come off the bench and score.

I do...streetballesque

Guys like him need a Sampson/Kruger to reel them in a bit and keep them focused...love the dimension he brings to the team

Agree with all of that except the "shooter" part. I see Newell being better at scoring it, but Raymond was a REALLY good shooter. Career 3 point percentage of 40.8%. That is a better career percentage than any of the top 14 career 3 point shooters (ranked on makes). That is pretty outstanding.

I'll admit, so far I've been wrong about Calvin. I thought he wasn't going to see much time because he would be playing selfish and out of control. But, so far he has played very well. He's a shoot first guy so he'll always be a little selfish, but he has managed himself very well so far and has been playing good basketball.

This.

I remember Raymond as the only guy I've seen who would be on a wide open fast-break and instead of going to the hoop like everyone else would stop and drain a three.

....Me to!!!! I actually questioned if he could be a D-1 player, and I thought SBD and Nick were crazy when they said he should start. :)

I'm eating a lil crow right now, because he is playing good ball.

You can count me in that group who said he should start. I said last year his on ball defense was better than Pledgers and unlike Pledger he could get to the hoop.

I actually thought he was as good at PG as Blair last year given all facets of his game. He could score, Blair could not, he could play defense, Blair could not, both made turnovers handling the ball.

I'm glad we have Grooms to run the team now though, and Pledger seems to be a different player. So I'm ok with Newell coming off the bench.
