Next head coach Porter Moser

True. The rest of my list was guys like Musselman, Cronin, and Donovan (a lot of smoke that he wants out of the NBA). None of those were slam dunks to be interested, but you don't know if you don't ask.

I wasn't really interested in the USC coach. I had some interest in Oats. Ohh, some interest in a Baylor assistant (Tang or Jakus).

And I was on record as saying I preferred McCasland to Moser, but I might be changing my mind on that one. I was never overly high on McCasland, BUT did like that he was new enough to this coaching game that I thought he had considerable room to grow/improve as a coach.

So if Matt is asking who I would have been happy with, that might have been realistic, I'd say Kellen, Tank, Jakus, Musselman, Cronin, and Donovan off the top of my head. I'm sure there are others too whose names simply have not come up.

Cronin, musselman, and Donovan were not realistic. I would have loved to have them but Cronin and Donovan make Lincoln Riley money. We can’t compete with that at all. Musselman is at a lateral job and he has built it back up. Why would he leave that for another rebuild? Think we got the highest profile guy we could.

Billy D wants out of nba?

He just resigned long term with the bulls....

People I've talked with who have some high level prospects and future recruits are really excited about the hire and think Joe C got better than what was expected. I will say they are much more excited about OU basketball than they were two months ago.

That's what I'm hearing. Heard OU reached out, even if it didn't go any further than that.

As for the contract, if you are offered a contract like that, you take it. You can always leave. I'll go on record as saying I don't think he'll be coaching in the NBA 2-3 years from now.

Two months ago, when we had just pulled off three wins over top 10 teams in a single month, were ranked in the top 10 in the country and were in the midst of an 8-1 stretch?

That's saying something.

Gotcha! Unc should call then!!

I know, right? It’s not me to tell people what they should think. I just know these people felt Lon was a nice guy but we’re not excited about the direction of the program. I guess if I had said one month ago you would be saying ,” well OU just lost 5 of 6 so I can see why people wouldn’t be excited”. Is that correct?

Or they could've said, "Yes, it's a nice run, but let's see if they can avoid their annual 'February Faceplant'."

Speaking of which, I should call the Trademark Office. I wonder if I could slip that phrase past Joe C's hired goons.

I wouldn't have said it, but I would have understood their feelings at that time. None of us were thrilled with that stretch at the end of the season.

Sure I would have....

But hiring a 17 year coaching veteran who has been to 2 NCAA Tournaments and has lots of bad seasons seems off to me.

He's finished last in the Missouri Valley 4 times.

4-14
4-14
6-12
1-17
5-11
4-14
7-11

That's 50% of his conference seasons... 4 of those are last place finishes.

He has finished with under .500 conference records 10 TIMES... 10 out of 14 conference records he is under .500 in his league... That is 71% of the time.

Think about that... OU just hired a coach who finished UNDER .500 in his league 71% of the time.

Defend that.. Justify that.
Is that worse than finishing with a losing record in the big 12 year after year?
I don't know.

How about a guy that's finished 1st, 1st, 2nd, and 1st in his conference in the last four years?

This.

I won't blame people for not liking the hire. I could very well see Moser turning out like other hot names that made runs in the tourney and then flame out at new schools.

I could also see him succeeding.

We will see. He had to have been a hot name so I'm excited we were able to snag him

My take on coaching....

your success isn't solely on your overall record...you have to account for what they walk into. A guy who takes over a down trodden team and makes them competitive can coach...period. Some of those guys are better coaches than guys who walk into a gold mine and just keep it running. Some guys with average records working in lesser jobs are often better coaches than some guys with better records. Just my opinion.

Honestly curious, what would that look like to you?

I'll tell you what it is for me at OU. It's Billy Tubbs, Kelvin Sampson and Lon Kruger. It's getting to the tournament almost every year. It's a Sweet 16 every few years and a deeper run every once in a while.

Frankly, anything better than that with our support and facilities would be pretty incredible.

Consistently fighting for the big 12 regular season title, having a really good home court record, competing in the big 12 tourney, can consistently having a top 4 seed in the ncaa tourney and making it to the ssweet 16 most years.

Basically, not celebrating being ranked in the top 25 would be a good start.

So in other words, only by being a blue blood will the next coach make us a success?

I felt Oats and Musselman were borderline unrealistic, but then again, I thought Moser was wishful thinking as well. I don't think there's anyway we pluck somebody from UCLA or the NBA. Woulda had about as good of a chance at Beard.

basically kelvin sampson.

He had two seasons at OU where he finished worse than 3rd in the conference. The most conference loses he ever had was 8. We played well in the conference tourney. We didn't have a great time in the big dance outside of his ff and e8 appearances.
