Yeah being OU’s best 2 way player & honorable mention Big12 is an embarrassment.[/

He was bad on offense. Scored 0 points against sam Houston state. I called him out as a problem for the season in that game and I was 100% right.

He also couldn’t defend legit power forwards. See osu.we are better off without him as our starting pf.

You know who doesn’t agree with you? Porter Moser. So much to the point that he’s contemplating filing a tampering grievance on UNLV.

I think the argument between Hill and Soares is closer than some want to believe. Hill is a likeable kid and the ultimate glue guy which will leave him forever in a good light with fans. The truth is they are different players. Hill is a Forward and Soares is guard, both can guard 3-4 positions fairly effectively.

This argument should really be Soares vs J Groves.

This.

Hill played a total of 42 more minutes than Soares. But fine, let's look at the per-40-minutes averages:

Points:
Hill--.11.8
Soares--9.88

Rebounds:
Hill--7
Soares--5.12

Free throw attempts:
Hill--3.70
Soares--2.56

Assists:
Hill--1.64
Soares--.2.52

Blocks:
Hill--.76
Soares--.44

Steals:
Hill--.092
Soares--.080

Oregon played more games than us so we have to use average minutes/game instead of total minutes:

Hill 32.7
Soares 27.9

That brings Soares average ppg to 10.3 per 40 minutes. The link below shows the per 40 for both players. Hill is slightly better in more categories, but I don’t think it is statistically significant in anything aside from Rebounds/game (in favor of Hill) and Assists/game (in favor of Soares).

And yet still shot a higher % from 3 than Soares. His biggest weakness is still better than the guard you are touting.

I am not touting anyone as much as showing (with statistics) that Hill isn’t the loss some want to believe he was. 6-6 guys who play good defense but cannot stretch the floor on offense are a dime a dozen in D1 basketball. Check the link above to see how close they are across the board.

Exactly right, and Sampson embraced it too. Conversely back in the day the OU basketball team provided exciting Saturday games for football official visitors. They worked hand in hand. Would be nice for bball to hold up their end of the bargain again...

I had a GREAT Sat years ago...

saw Blake in the afternoon beat a crappy team...then went to the Jump Around butt kicking of TT that night...what a great day! Especially coming from KC it worked out great.

I agree with this. I was wondering from the beginning why some were citing Soares as a replacement for Hill. Soares played 351 more minutes than Groves, but here are some of their respective stats from 2023.

Shooting %
Soares: 38%
Groves: 44%

3pt%
Soares: 25%
Groves: 38%

Free throw %
Soares: 83.1
Groves: 70.8

Points per 40 minutes
Soares: 10.3
Groves: 13.2

Reb per 40 minutes
Soares: 5.1
Groves: 5

Assists per 40 minutes
Soares: 2.5
Groves: 1.6

Free throw attempts per 40 minutes
Soares: 2.6
Groves: 1.5

i think the other thing to note is that Soares is likely to be back to the 20 min a game kind of role . .

Untrue.

I hope this guy isn’t the starter. I said that in other post. We need quality depth.

But I also know 13 guys aren’t gonna play. I know 1-2-3-4 guys are gonna transfer next offseason most likely.

is that positions...1/2/3/4 or just the number of guys that might...1 to 4. No offense but I think I could put that out there and be right...about ANY team. Seems the portal has created a yr by yr team.

Number of guys.

Only 2 teams had no transfers. That’s my point. If a team has 13 ships, handful gonna transfer every year. So you’re gonna take guys just to fill the roster. Or projects. Or flyers. Or Local kid with limited upside.

13 guys can’t play.

Wat?

I’m stating that if Soares is coming to replace Hill then OU got considerably worse at that position.

If he’s the 6/7th man at 16-22 minutes a game this is a great get. Or even a starter in order to bring Cooper off the bench as a freshmen, but Cooper playing more than him as the season progresses.

Is it not more likely the starters are already Uzan, McCollum, and Oweh?

I think so, but OU might go with Cooper or Soares at the 4.

A 4 man seems like the last big piece. If a clear starter at the 4 comes in , I won't worry how the minutes work out down the roster.

I don't see how anybody can consider that a good thing as a starting lineup.

I don't mind going that small for stretches of games, but with all of our rebounding and inside problems, essentially going to a 4 guard lineup (Cooper and Soares are neither prototypical stretch 4's) probably isn't going to solve them.

And we need shooters. Another reason I don't really understand how this is going to work. We'll see who else Moser can add.
