Any of you go to the open practice yesterday? What are your thoughts?

Re: Oct 27 practice report

You should've put a question mark on the title

Thanks Ada

Didnt go but heard they got after it defensively and looking like a Sampson, scrappy team.

ok. scrappy defense and lon's offense. I'll take it.

I dunno if the game today will allow that type of defense ( Sampson style)

Houston gave up 64 ppg last year, which was 18th in the nation.

Oklahoma gave up 82 ppg last year, which was 334th in the nation.

To put that in perspective... only 14 teams in the nation were worse than OU in defense last year, and none of them are high majors.

It probably just means our D looks good b/c our O is so bad.

Just sayin'.

Or, it means guys like Vbdad and Bob Przybylo, who have actually watched the team practice this season, may know what they’re talking about. How many practices have you seen lately?

After a year complaining about how bad the defense was (and blaming Trae to a large degree), I'm sure a lot of people will enjoy complaining when we don't score 90+ per game this season! :facepalm

Abd, I think your post comparing us to Houston is a bit too simplistic because it doesn't account for pace of play or competition, but it is beyond question that we were a very bad defensive team last season. I'm confident that the defense will be much better this year, both statistically and from an effort standpoint. What remains to be seen is whether that will be enough to overcome the likely offensive decline. I'm glad we get to start finding out the answer in 10 days!

How about a Complaint Tread for all of this
and keep actual news on a Practice Report thread.

so your pessimism is supposed to be noteworthy? I think not.

Being optimistic JUST to be optimistic is dumb.

I don't expect the team to be very good this year. At all. I certainly hope I'm wrong, but I'm allowed to voice that opinion. I'm not here bashing Kruger, or the guys, or the team (yet), just stating my opinion based on the facts I know.

I trust my grandmother's opinion as much (or moreso) than Bob's.

Everybody was saying the OU football D looked improved in practice too. Practice doesn't mean much. Will the D be improved? Probably. It was God awful last year. But with the fall off we're going to have on O, the D improvement isn't likely going to be enough to have a positive effect on our record.

Again, I hope I'm wrong. I've put my prediction on record, and I'll eat the crow that comes with that if I'm incorrect.

Preseason polls seem to agree with me though.

I believe they do have some open practices for the media.
But that isn't what he meant. There was a lot of talk of the Defense being good. From the coaches, the players, from the scrimmage notes, etc.

They’d have some open portions in August, then boot them

Yep. This.

Defense was an afterthought last year. It should have obvious to everyone that the plan in every game was to score a lot of points and hope it was enough. There was very little thought—or effort—to making stops, even when our offense went south. It didn’t help that dissension among the players made it virtually impossible to develop anything that resembled team defense.

I was told that at the team meeting last year the players (minus the two who transferred) committed to a change in philosophy that would put defense first in their plan to win games. Early reports seem to suggest that is exactly what they’re doing.

I understand why some posters refuse to believe we’re finally going to see really good defense again. I’ll admit that I’m cautiously optimistic. But I’m willing to give our players a chance to prove themselves because I truly believe the commitment to defense will be different this time. If I’m wrong, no one will have to remind me to serve up a healthy dose of crow for myself.
