OK State Cribs

No, what's really lame is continuing to brag about those NCAA tourney titles, more than sixty years later (aggie fans pretending that the NIT wasn't the more prestigious tourney at the time is also lame).

OU went to the NCAA title game back then, but it rarely comes up in conversation. Why? Because very few people are still alive who remember that game. I mean, cool that we went that far in the tourney (and yes, even cooler if we'd won it), but honestly, at what point are those NCAA Tourney titles not worth bringing up anymore? Will your children's chldren's children still be citing those titles, even if the aggies haven't won it all in the ensuing seasons?

When a team wins consistently over the decades, it's different. OU fans can cite the football championships the Sooners won under Wilkinson because they also won some under Switzer and they've won one (and come close several other times) under Stoops. There's a consistency there. Heck, even before Bud, there was Benny Owen. We're the only program in the country to have four coaches who have won 100 games or more.

But when a program has had just one dominant coach, and his best days were in the 1940s and '50s, and another who did pretty well but never won a title (nor even came very close), then to continuously cite NCAA Tourney championships that occurred more than six decades ago is the very definition of lame.

Imagine if OU had been only fair to middlin' in the years after Wilkinson. Some good teams, a few bowl games, even a major or BCS bowl or two, but no titles -- not even any appearances in the title game. And a slew of sub-.500 seasons.

In other words, imagine if OU football was the equivalent of oswho basketball.

Under those circumstances, aggie fans would roundly mock OU fans if they kept citing those titles from the 1950s as if they meant much, and the Sooner fans would deserve it.

Just as Aggie hoops fans deserve every bit of razzing they get.

WTF are you even talking about?

Do you honestly think that the two championships in the 1940s are the only thing that OSU hoops can hang its hat on?

How about two Final Fours, an Elite Eight, 4 other Sweet Sixteens, two Big 12/8 championships, and three Big 12/8 tournament championships in the past 20 years or so. That's what most people point to these days. It's just a nice cherry on top that we have a few championships from way back.

Also - what does any of this have to do with OU football? This is a basketball board.

And I'll pose you this question again - if winning those championships was so effing easy back then, why doesn't OU have a few?

Because we weren't a farm school able to bring in draft dodgers, duh Jeff.

Also Jeff, those numbers seem really weak when a little ol "football school" like Oklahoma has matched or exceeded those numbers in the past 20 years or so.

I'm sure Henry Iba had nothing to do with it.

I could be wrong but I believe at the time the winner of NIT and the NCAA tourney played each other and that is how the national champion was determined.

This...I'll admit I was on a fishing expedition, but there were two deferrals available at the time, agricultural and religious. Ergo, the mighty oSu vs. Marist clashes.

Ooops, I meant DePaul....had to look waaay back in the database for that one.

I never said it was easy (though it was easier than winning the NIT in those days): I said it was a long time ago, and not really salient any more, but oswho fans keep bringing those NCAA Tourney titles up, as if they carry some weight today.

Since those NCAA tourney wins, oswho hasn't been an exceptional basketball program by any measure. A good one, now and then, but not a perennial national power. Not even close.

The football reference was merely used to illustrate my point; I'm trying to help you understand, is all. It clearly touched a nerve, so I guess it worked. You know it's true that if, in the post-Bud years, OU had only been as good in football as oswho has been in basketball in the post-Iba years, you aggies would laugh yourselves silly over any OU fan who brought up the Wilkinson-era championships.

But you guys keep bringing up the national titles, because they are the only thing that places you above OU in any meaningful way in basketball. OU's better by literally dozens of other measures, so you guys cling dearly to the dusty old trophies, as they're just about all you have to win the ongoing Bedlam debate.

Pretty impressive set up they have in Stillwater... I think they mentioned something about $4.1 million? haha

Dang sky. That was one impressive beat down. I totally agree with the content provided to our osu bretheren. BOOMER SOONER BABY!!!

Re: OSU Cribs (locker room video)

Not to be dick but there is already a 2 page thread on this.

Right.

I forgot. You just waited for the G.I.s to come home and then set up a slush fund in order to pay the best ones to build a football program.

My mistake.

Also Jeff, those numbers seem really weak when a little ol "football school" like Oklahoma has matched or exceeded those numbers in the past 20 years or so.

Please explain to me how that is in any way, shape or form relevant to the point I was making.

Oh... right... the old "the NIT was the real champ" argument.

Lame.

If winning an NCAA championship was no bid deal back then, explain to me why OU doesn't have a couple?

Were you not competing in b-ball back then?

Seriously... if it was no big deal, why not just win a few?

We're not talking about those pre modern era championships again? Alright, let's do this. Any Cowboy NC defender name me 7 players on that team and give me a brief run down on them as far as their contribution to that team, a small bio, how that player ended at OSU etc.

:woot

crickets. fingers typing keyboard, searching google......

I'm actually SHOCKED that the NCAA would recognize any championships from that era under the circumstances.

At least those guys weren't yellow, they served their country. Just admit it those so-called "championships" are as phony as "pistol pete" himself (a two-bit drunk who has proven out to be a fraud in numerous articles).

LeBryan Nash certainly was impressed by it.

Yeah and the word I am hearing is LeBryan Nash and his high school buddies were enjoying the bar a little too much also on his visit. This causes youngsters to talk to much, especially about things their future colleges don't want getting out.

any more info, i haven't heard about this yet

What year are we allowed to start counting championships in? Thanks and I'll take it off the air.

Wasn't UTEP the first team to win a title with a black player on their team? If so that's the first year the sport started. So that year.

O yeah, that locker room is not very nice. My $275 a month health club here in Scottsdale puts it to shame.

:ez-laugh: Yes, it was impressive, Faithful. But I don't think I'd go so far as to call the aggies "bretheren." Heathen, maybe.
