Open Practice

Monday and Friday in the practice gym
Tuesday and Thursday in the main arena

Is the practice gym open too or is it only open in the main gym? Thank you for the quick answer!

All practices are open.

I asked in another thread but didn't get a response. Has anyone heard from Gary in a while? He could be busy with other things, but he's usually all over these practices and I havent noticed him posting at all. I miss those reports!

We all miss them!

Problem is, some knucklehead on Kruger's staff asked him to stop posting his practice reports on this board. And, yes I know I have used the word "knucklehead" before in describing the underling who made that decision, but it's the best I can do if I want to keep my comments clean as well as civil.

If Gary wants to add to what I said, he doesn't need my permission. Just know that he was not too happy when he passed that information on to me several weeks ago. To be honest, I'm still as mad as hell about it! I find it hard to believe that Coach Kruger even knows about what this guy told Gary, much less instructed him to do it. LK is the only coach in my memory to create an open door policy at all OU practices as a way to get fans more involved. No way he would do a complete 180 by barring someone like Gary from reporting what he saw on a board that was launched six years ago to promote OU basketball.

I'll stop here before I get all riled up again!!!

Whoever told Gary to stop posting is being a hypocrite, it only hurts gaining fan interest. Wish I could skip work and ask LK about this.

Here's what Gary posted about it on Sept 19th:

No, not now. While myself and a handful of others attended most of the summer practices, a mid level flunky with the program insisted that I not post practice reports for that period. I jawed back a little but went along.

Now, he insist that no "outsiders" be present for practice until Oct. While that rule may apply to me and everyday day variety season ticket holders and tip in club members, I would guess that it does not apply to big donors to the program. Any of those will probably continue to filter in and out as they please.

It is unclear if the policy change comes from Coach Kruger. My guess would be no.

Does that mean he can start posting something in October now that official practices have started? Remember Fox SW is going to televise the Thursday practice. I have my DVR already programmed.

You're absolutely right, sooner83! Coach Kruger knows that, too, which is why I don't think he has any idea what a member of his staff said to Garyeb2. I will be very disappointed to learn that I'm wrong in assuming LK had no part in barring Gary from posting his practice reports. It would go against everything he has tried to do since coming to OU three plus years ago.

Email him and copy his assistant.

There's absolutely nothing in those practice reports that reveals any surprises or inside information to opposing teams. Not at this point of the pre-season practices. Maybe if it was during game-week preparation for a particular team, I could see the reason for exercising some discretion with the information.

It's a refreshing change from the the paranoia around the Sooner football practices. It's all just general pre-season / conditioning type information that give us some perspective about the team.

What have we learned so far?
  • TaShawn Thomas can really help the team this year. If there is one thing I gleaned out of the reports is he runs the court better than I expected. He's a stud.
  • Buford isn't practicing. For his development, I wish he could at least practice.
  • Dinjyl Walker is probably a better backup PG than I expected. He's a good, smart player.
  • It sounds as if all the "veteran" returning players have gotten better.
  • Spangler has improved his offensive range.
  • Lattin is going to be a lot of help in the post. He's better offensively than I expected. McNeace is probably a year away.
  • The summer injuries don't seem to be bothering Cousins or Booker too much.
  • They are emphasizing defensive and rebounding improvements much to my delight.

None of those items are a shock.

Exactly my thoughts usetobe. There's nothing in those reports that would be a cause for shutting it down. Mainly just a lot of telling us what drills were ran and what players stood out. Certainly wouldn't think Kruger would be that worried about it since he has all these practices open. Even streamed all of them a couple years ago. It makes no sense.

Hey guys. I wouldn't want anyone to gin up any grief over this. In fact, there were two other good fans and message board members that were present and participated some during the initial interaction with the staff member in question. Their perception of the motivation and tone of that interaction is in varying degrees different than mine.

I just had the chance to sit through one hour of practice all of last week. I had two dental appointments and a long wait in line at the Social Security office jamming up my schedule. Tomorrow, I'm leaving town for an eight day Vegas trip. I'm sure that at some point I will get my panties unwadded and make a few practices. I'll be happy to post my observations on those occasions.
