OT: Football Talk

Anybody else at the game?
I'm not sure if this is an every game occurrence, getting into the stadium was embarrassing. It took us an hour to get in the gate. And every gate was just as long of a line. In particular, gate 6 had everyone going through one metal detector. The alabama fans we were with thought it was a joke. We missed the first drive of the game. They were super bummed to miss the pregame festivities. It was so bad they thought maybe gate 6 was the visitors only gate...apparantly, at LSU, they have a visitor's only gate that is purposely slow in getting visitor fans in.

I"ll email the AD department but it is really unacceptable. You shouldn't have to get in line an hour before kickoff to get to your seat in time.

Hoping that turns out to be a turning point in the Venables era and we can all look back in two, three or four years from now and go "The OU-Bama game is when the Brent Venables' era officially began." He's such an easy man to root for and Saturday's brand of football was incredibly enjoyable to watch. We kicked their ass, make no mistake about it. BV and Alley had Jalen Milroe in absolute hell and JJF put together a really effective gameplan that the players executed at a high level. Complementary football baby! It's beautiful.

Suddenly feeling a lot more confident about being able to hang with the Tigers in Baton Rouge, especially seeing what this Bama offense and ground game did to the LSU defense a couple of weeks ago.

If he really punched a coach he shouldn’t have gotten any carries.

Doesn’t make sense to still play him if that was the case. If you are going to allow him to play at all after that alleged incident, then freaking play him
They are speaking of Walker, last year.

The rumor was he took a swing at Demarco. He was inactive for a game or 2 last year as personal reasons, but was his punishment. He played after that. My understanding is ou would not give him scholarship or nil do to this, so he left.

An average offense with a good-but-not great defense doesn't necessarily get you where you need to go playing the schedule we will face in the SEC.
OU's defense was great this year.

It wasn't elite. But it was great.

but of course you will disagree because that is what you do

We can quibble on elite/great, but it wasn't good enough to make us a national title contender if paired with an average offense. Riley's first three teams could have won the title with an average (or slightly below average) defense because we had some of the best offenses in the history of the sport. Our D this year gave up way too many big plays. I've heard so many game recaps on the pod where Teddy and Gabe say "our defense played great . . .except for four or five big plays." The problem is, those four or five plays count. It would be like saying an offense played great "other than the four turnovers." We need to get better on the back end. and still need more game changers on the D line.

Will Arbuckle be contractually obligated to use Bauer Sharp in at least one trick play per game?

Defense still has lots of room for improvement. Missouri converted too many third downs on the ground. They've come miles in three years. Unreal how far Riley allowed it to fall, but that's what you get when you hire an Air Raider to lead your program.

What is your definition of a title contender?
Because we are a playoff team with an average offense.

With an average offense, we beat tennessee, south carolina, ole miss and missouri.
Probably still lose to texas and lsu

Tennessee and South Carolina didn’t even have to run their offenses against us. There is no way of knowing how those games play out if our offense hadn’t put us in such deep holes, but I wouldn’t like our chances against either of them with an average offense. I certainly wouldn’t bet on us winning BOTH games. Our defense had a halftime lead against Ole Miss and got absolutely gashed in the third quarter. So to count all three of those games as wins seems a stretch.

I’ve just seen so many people make this kind of comment, as if our program is in great shape other than a bad offense. In reality, the defense is pretty much the only thing that isn’t bad. We need much more than just the addition of an average offense to be a very good football team.

Our third quarter troubles worry me most going into next season. I'm confident Arbuckle will be able to cobble together something that resembles a decent offense, but our performance after halftime leaves much to be desired.
