syb,
Answer this one question, what annual level of performance do you expect from
women's hoops?
Based on your answer is OU achieving or underachieving at that performance level?
To me, OU should be competing for conference regular season titles every year and winning at least one title in a four year cycle.
OU should also get a tourney bid every year and once in that 4 year cycle make a deep tourney run (elite eight). All while avoiding NCAA issues and posting a high NCAA APR.
That's the standard Sherri set. I don't think it's unrealistic.
in the last 4 year cycle.
no titles conference or tourney (and atm left during this stretch weakening the conference
considerably).
and last year was really the only year OU was competing with Baylor for the conference title.
not a single deep tourney run.
No NCAA issues and the APR has been excellent (that's more of a trailing score but it's the only metric out there)
I have a bit more pride in what has been accomplished than some. When Geno made the comment that Sherri was what women's basketball should be about, I think that also spoke for the University of Oklahoma as a program and reflected on the University of Oklahoma as an institution. It is difficult to argue with what he said, and I didn't see much disagreement. I wonder if he was also considering his own highly-successful program when he made that statement. Could it be possible that while being the dominant winner in women's basketball that he could have admiration for a program that he wished that he could emulate?
Sherri is fifty, the youngest of the three coaches that we often discuss on this board (Kim is 53, and Karen is 51). Yet, Sherri is the only one in the Hall of Fame as a coach (Kim made it as a player. I wonder if they would ever consider her as a coach). She has taken something that barely existed and built a program that drew admiration from one that most regard as the best.
I'll give Sherri the benefit of some patience given what she has accomplished. She has been to sixteen straight NCAA appearances as compared to one in the history of the program prior to her arrival. I think she was disappointed that she didn't achieve a national title with Courtney. One big upset hurt that run as well as the loss of every guard on the team the following year. Kind of need those guards to go with the posts, as some will find. And, I think Sherri would also express regrets at missing on some key recruits that could have kept the program where she wanted it. Missing a few when you are at Norman shouldn't be all that much of a surprise. How many national women's recruits have gone to OSU? Sometimes, we were one key player away from a deep run or a title. Sometimes, that player was on the sidelines with an ACL. We don't have the depth to overcome the losses of a Whitney Hand.
Despite the fact that we haven't had a deep run in five years, we have only once been lower than third in the conference since 2005, Since winning that first title, we have finished first six times, second three times, and third three times. Now, compare that to a one-time power in Texas. Is it where we would like to be? Not really, as far as winning is concerned. But, this is an educational institution, and winning is about more than the score.
When I look at what we put on the court, I see players that I can be proud of. They will do well in life. They have exhibited excellent performance as students and as role models. Not only will I be proud of their performance at tip off, I will be proud of them ten and twenty years from now. I also have faith that none of them will be writing books in which they tell how disappointed they were in their treatment at OU. Furthermore, I have faith that each will be able to write. Given the videos of some All-Americans at a local university, it is obvious that they did not learn English in college.
I have also seen that if Sherri does have some talent that she can coach it. We do have some talent arriving, contrary to what is posted on this board. I suspect that Sherri will be doing better than competing for a conference title with it. I have seen that Sherri can recognize talent and develop it. Just as importantly, I have seen that Sherri can do this while instilling a reverence for the ideals of education and a respect for what can be achieved. I am prepared to give her a wide berth. She has earned it.
