OU - a&m

In watching this game when OU made a good run it was exciting to watch. It was a total team effort. In the second half everything OU did in the first half stopped and Jones got back in the game and ran the show. A&M has not seemed to come together as a unit yet but the 3 guards do a great job in keeping them in games. Next season could be very different if team doesn't enter equation

Lots of good points in what you have posted here, Norm.

I am amazed that Gabbi was the point guard for the International Team that won a gold medal but can't seem to do that for us. I think the key is they asked her to run the team not score. She scored very little last summer. Much like Blair is asking of his pg. We seem to want her to do everything. Manage the team, score with drives, hit lots of 3's, etc. That is not her skill set.

The problem is mainly that Little has disappeared from scoring. She can't hit anything - even when open. That may come later but it is not certain. So we are asking others to score - even though they struggle at crunch time. That is where A&M had an edge over us last night. They have 2 players who can score pretty effectively. We have only one this year - only KK hits a really good percentage of her shots (admitting that on one occasion last night she literally threw it over the entire rim - but I can take that occasionally since she hits such a high percentage).

Once KK leaves the game, we drop so far off in our ability to control the inside..... I like Vivi, but she simply cannot control things for an extended period. She plays too soft and moves too slow. She does hit an occasional really nice shot - and my hope is that with another year of healing she may really step up her game.

Now as to Maddie. I'm frustrated but not ready to give up. I thought at one moment last night that she might be ready to put us on her back and take it to the next level - but then she quit shooting. Think about OSU's leading scorer. She scores by shooting tons of shots. She typically shoots about 7 of 24 or so. Then with a few free throws has 20+ points. Sherri needs to tell Maddie - "I want you to take at least 20 shots every game". It may not work, but what we are doing is not going to work well against teams with lots of height.

And it is far better than letting TT run inside and throw the ball away. I'm sure that frustrates Sherri too, but she seems to think "it didn't work that time, but surely it will next time so I will not put a stop to it". Well, I can assure you that it is NOT going to work next time either. It's just going to be another turnover in effect - even though it gets recorded as a missed shot.

Brittany Martin is 100 of 192 from the field for a .521 FG%. Averaging 24.3 p/g. Maddie is shooting 34 of 96 for .395 from the field for 9.4 p/g.

atlanta? Step back from the edge of the cliff. I'll only address a couple of your points.

I've seen several posts suggesting that Maddie is not living up to whatever was expected. I'm rather surprised at her development, given that she is still somewhat sore in the knees after games. I don't know that she has escaped the fear of an injury just yet, and it appears that she is somewhat reticent, for one reason or another, to take over and keep it. Yet, in two very key games, it was Maddie that brought us back to life.

We were pretty low after losing to North Texas, as we should have been. I think it caught everyone by surprise. BYU was a worthy opponent, and they did beat A&M. Yet, Maddie almost single-handedly put BYU on their heels from which they never recovered. I don't see the play-by-play of the game, but I still have the recording. In probably the first three minutes of the game, Maddie had eleven points, two beautiful entry passes to Kay Kay that led to easy points, a couple of rebounds, and a steal. OU began with a 15-3 lead, and BYU never made it close. Maddie ended up with only fifteen points with seven rebounds and five assists. But, that momentum carried us through several games.

When we encountered another tough game against Washington, it was Maddie who led us with fifteen points with a couple of assists and a couple of blocks to go with five rebounds. We shot 39.4%. Maddie was five of eight. We shot 38.5% from three. Maddie was three of four. She has been rather key in crucial games. With ten points, seven rebounds, two assists, three blocks, and three steals, she didn't exactly disappear in the A&M loss.

I think Maddie is showing signs of breaking out. Sherri and Chad have been around a while, and Sherri is not known to exaggerate. When they say they think she will be the best player in the conference, you might want to take that to heart. They just didn't say when.

You also have to acknowledge that OU is missing a key ingredient. Excuses seem to work for Texas. So, we are missing Gioya. We just got McKenna back. I think Gileysa is still working off an ACL injury. Do we get excuses? They just don't count as games won. Do they?

syb,
No one gets excuses. I don't care what excuses UT fans throw out. Certainly not someone getting 800k a year.
Gioya COULD be a missing piece. I hope so. She not Maddie was the
best player on the team for a ten game stretch last year.
There's no ledge, there's no hyperbole in anything I said.
You just don't like it.

Answer this one question, what annual level of performance do you expect from
women's hoops?
Based on your answer is OU achieving or underachieving at that performance level?

To me, OU should be competing for conference regular season titles every year and winning at least one title in a four year cycle.
OU should also get a tourney bid every year and once in that 4 year cycle make a deep tourney run (elite eight). All while avoiding NCAA issues and posting a high NCAA APR.
That's the standard Sherri set. I don't think it's unrealistic.
in the last 4 year cycle.
no titles conference or tourney (and atm left during this stretch weakening the conference
considerably).
and last year was really the only year OU was competing with Baylor for the conference title.
not a single deep tourney run.
No NCAA issues and the APR has been excellent (that's more of a trailing score but it's the only metric out there)

Manning discussion just needs to be tabled until season end. Data will tell the tale on where that question is trending.

Sherri's guaranteed compensation is $1,100,000 plus bonuses which is about $500,000 more than anyone else in the conference not at Baylor or TCU as their information is not subject to the public information act due to there being private schools. Almost assuredly Kim is making more than Sherri but who knows.

Maddie has earned the right to have us wait to see what kind of a WBB player she will become. Jason White won his Heisman in his sixth year. She has a long way to go to get to the B12's best player but let us give her the opportunity to get regardless how likely/unlikely it is.

One of the most interesting things you learn from the links is the extent to which Sherri and Kim have dominated the league. Sherri has won more regular season titles and Kim more conference tournament titles.

Bill Fennelly is a clear 3rd in results - but quite a ways behind Sherri and Kim. Clearly pay is based on results - just the way it should be. The most surprising fact is how little the other coaches have been able to do to close the gap.

Your links clarify once again that Sherri is a superstar coach - exactly why she is entering the Hall of Fame.

I have a bit more pride in what has been accomplished than some. When Geno made the comment that Sherri was what women's basketball should be about, I think that also spoke for the University of Oklahoma as a program and reflected on the University of Oklahoma as an institution. It is difficult to argue with what he said, and I didn't see much disagreement. I wonder if he was also considering his own highly-successful program when he made that statement. Could it be possible that while being the dominant winner in women's basketball that he could have admiration for a program that he wished that he could emulate?

Sherri is fifty, the youngest of the three coaches that we often discuss on this board (Kim is 53, and Karen is 51). Yet, Sherri is the only one in the Hall of Fame as a coach (Kim made it as a player. I wonder if they would ever consider her as a coach). She has taken something that barely existed and built a program that drew admiration from one that most regard as the best.

I'll give Sherri the benefit of some patience given what she has accomplished. She has been to sixteen straight NCAA appearances as compared to one in the history of the program prior to her arrival. I think she was disappointed that she didn't achieve a national title with Courtney. One big upset hurt that run as well as the loss of every guard on the team the following year. Kind of need those guards to go with the posts, as some will find. And, I think Sherri would also express regrets at missing on some key recruits that could have kept the program where she wanted it. Missing a few when you are at Norman shouldn't be all that much of a surprise. How many national women's recruits have gone to OSU? Sometimes, we were one key player away from a deep run or a title. Sometimes, that player was on the sidelines with an ACL. We don't have the depth to overcome the losses of a Whitney Hand.

Despite the fact that we haven't had a deep run in five years, we have only once been lower than third in the conference since 2005, Since winning that first title, we have finished first six times, second three times, and third three times. Now, compare that to a one-time power in Texas. Is it where we would like to be? Not really, as far as winning is concerned. But, this is an educational institution, and winning is about more than the score.

When I look at what we put on the court, I see players that I can be proud of. They will do well in life. They have exhibited excellent performance as students and as role models. Not only will I be proud of their performance at tip off, I will be proud of them ten and twenty years from now. I also have faith that none of them will be writing books in which they tell how disappointed they were in their treatment at OU. Furthermore, I have faith that each will be able to write. Given the videos of some All-Americans at a local university, it is obvious that they did not learn English in college.

I have also seen that if Sherri does have some talent that she can coach it. We do have some talent arriving, contrary to what is posted on this board. I suspect that Sherri will be doing better than competing for a conference title with it. I have seen that Sherri can recognize talent and develop it. Just as importantly, I have seen that Sherri can do this while instilling a reverence for the ideals of education and a respect for what can be achieved. I am prepared to give her a wide berth. She has earned it.

This is a great discussion. My only addition to it is that there has been endless discussion about recruiting. I think recruiting is why Pam DeCosta was brought in. Sherri has said that she doesnt care for recruiting. Looking back over months of posts, I think we all agree that OU has been one outstanding player short to achieve the success we all want. Most all like the success we've had but that only makes us want more. Having that one really good player to go with what Sherri usually has would do it.

syb,
great comments about Sherri. Don't disagree with a single character or past performance stuff. Facts don't lie. Sherri's been a great coach.

Now, Answer the question stated in my post.
2015-2016 and moving forward.
What are your expectations for Sooner hoops program?

For Bob/Football
OU should compete/win a Big 12 title every year.
In a 4 year cycle, OU should win at least 2 Big 12 titles, and make at least one legitimate
run at the college football playoff.
Maintain improve APR to avoid loss scholarships.
Avoid major NCAA problems.
For a 4 year cycle Bob was not meeting expectations and needed to make changes.
Significant changes especially in staff and recruiting approach were made and are paying
off.
He's now setup to maybe make a run similar to 2000 to 2004.
Again Bob established this standard/expectation.

For Lon/men's hoops.
OU should earn a tourney bid every year.
In a 4 year cycle, compete for a Big 12 title. Win a conference tourney championship.
In a 4 year cycle, make a deep tourney run (elite eight).
NO NCAA problems.
Maintain improve APR to avoid loss of scholarships.
Billy and Kelvin set the bar here long ago.
Capel failed these expectations in numerous areas and was appropriately fired.

j2d2,
Bob used to be pretty disengaged from recruiting. Relying upon his key assistants.
It worked well from 2000 to 2008
Recruiting changed in 2007/2008, and continued to evolve.
Social media exploded in 2010, OU got sloppy, lazy recruiting by some assistants. Bob made a terrible hire at OL coach. Made a mistake promoting Heupel. Didn't react to changes that no longer allowed him to have strong recruiters/weak position coaches.

Sherri's got to continually change/upgrade her recruiting practices. Talent acquisition is
vital especially in women's hoops where difference makers pretty much rule the game.
She needs to get on Twitter with a big presence. Needs to start "recruiting" encouraging
OU fans to create Twitter media content.
There should be Vines of OU women's highlights every game.
The state of OU's women's social media efforts are archaic.
OU fans should know via Twitter who OU is recruiting and when they are visiting.
There's a passionate OU women's hoops fanbase that can help.
Lon's tapped into it.

Excellent! The problem I foresee is, it's highly unlikely that Sherri is going to make changes to her staff or start using social media to her advantage.

Guys, you are living in the dark ages ranting about Twitter. Visit a few college campuses. Twitter is losing it's attraction to kids. On the LHN recently they asked the Texas players what their favorite social media tool was. Few - I believe only one - emphasized twitter. Middle age - and older folks are migrating to twitter - and think it is the do all end all. Young people are moving on to much better formats.

Read what Bob says. He doesn't use any social media personally - and does not intend to start. Assistants do that for him. Whether a head coach personally taps around on social media is not an issue. Recruiting is very hard work. Coaches are very busy. They are not sitting at their desks tapping out tweets all day. Think about it.

I think Sherri has made some attempts to improve the program. Injuries have cost her a couple of key players who could have helped. Whitney looked like a world-beater as a freshman. Maddie did for three games. Then, we lost both twice.

This is a team that was a clear second last year. It wasn't all that far from first, closer to 14-2 than to 9-9. It was one of two teams to beat Baylor. A lot is back. Losing Gioya hasn't helped. But, this team has everyone coming back next year except for Kay Kay. They are beginning to fit, and that should improve. I suspect that the addition of Nancy, Chelsea, and Morgan will make next year a dangerous team. The program may well win it this year if Gioya comes back strong, and Maddie continues to develop. It wouldn't hurt if Peyton would regain her shooting, and Gabbi settled down a bit.

But, I expect improvement, and I don't think we are that far from a Final Four team. If we come together, we could make it this year, primarily because there really aren't four good teams out there this year that stand above. I think it may well be nothing more than who is playing the best during Sweet Sixteen week. I think we are closer than many think.

I don't compare football with women's basketball. Football has never been cancelled for lack of interest or support. It has also had a tradition. We had some good years in the thirties. But, Bud and George Lynn Cross build a dynasty that is self-fulfilling, and it has the full cooperation of all of the alumni support it could want. It also had the good fortune of being the first university in this area to open up to African-Americans which gave a recruiting advantage that lasted a while. Thus, I have no interest in conference titles. I expect them. If OU doesn't win a conference title, I look hard at the coaches. But, that foundation is firm, and it isn't difficult to put a roof on such a strong foundation.

Men's basketball should be easier than women's. It hasn't been cancelled either. But, it hasn't had the history of the football program to build a giant. We have had some very good coaches who built the program, but only as long as they were there. The program isn't self-sustaining like football. I am very pleased with this year's team, just as I was pleased with the efforts of Sampson and Tubbs. But, expectations differ in various sports. Right now, the only program that is disturbing to me is wrestling. It doesn't look like the program that won seven national titles and dominated, along with the Aggies, for over forty years.

The point is not whether someone is using Twitter. It is still fairly popular. But it is being overrun by other forms of social media. Like I said spend some time on a college campus. It is amazing how fast things are changing.

"More mature" folks are slower to figure technology out and they finally start paying attention to one form. Then they think "this is what everyone is doing". But kids are always looking for the "next best thing". To keep up you have to watch all of it. Not just twitter. I bet lots of our players and recruits are using several forms of social media other than twitter.

I really doubt Cox's decision to go to Baylor instead of OU was not due to the # of tweets made by Kim and Sherri.

I'm not saying the coaches must use Twitter exclusively. If some recruits use other forums, use those too!

Snapchat is pretty popular. its short 20 second videos people use... some kids have them listed for public use, Snapchat is something OU can use to upload videos of locker room excitement, or what the team does on buses to the game stuff like that... ILOVE_GIRLSBASKETBALL is a page i follow on instagram, they had put up a highlight of Little hitting 10 3s vs Kansas St last year...
