OU - a&m

I agree with you on the crunch person.
Sherri wanted it to be Morgan and Morgan finally gave up saying something akin to "what more can I do" in frustration at her coach.

Peyton isn't a leader. Maddie isn't a leader. We don't have a leader.

Whitney was a leader. Courtney was a leader. D-Rob was a leader.

Not having a leader, or having one, is an indication of recruiting successes and weaknesses.

Maddie only played half the game. She quit at halftime. You're right, she is not a leader.

I have been on Gabbi's bandwagon ever since she arrived in Norman. Great kid, had some nice games last year and even a glimpse or two of coming around this year. But, she is not the quarterback we need. She cannot create for herself. She is not coming close to being the conference leader in assists. She is not a shutdown defender. She is not running this offense. She is just Gabbi. She is a pretty good ball handler. She can knock down an open shot once in a while. But, put a hand in her face and she is toast. We better hope that Sherri is all over Tatum or someone as good/better than her.

Like everyone else, I have seen the potential in Maddie. What I haven't seen is Maddie using that potential to be a great player. I'm to the point that day is never going to come. She will graduate OU with the label, "greatest potential that never materialized." I have never liked her playing out front and never will but, that's another issue.

Peyton is a good player. High IQ. Great anticipation. Normally good shooter. If she were quicker, she might be a great player.

Derica is a player you can use off the bench for 8 minutes a game to knock down some 3 pointers.

LaNesia and T'ona are great kids. Both are very quick. Both are normally good defenders. Both scare the heck out of me every time they touch the ball. I understand why T'ona plays as much as she does...Gabbi.

I don't think we have a player on our team that would have started for Blair last night. The bad part is, A&M is not the best team we will play this year.

We have to have better players.

Tatum looked pretty good in that highlight video I posted, but I'm not sure if she's be an elite point guard...

We lost to another ranked team. Y'all are acting like its the end of the world. It could have been much worse than what it was. It's as simple as this. We take the loss, learn from it, and move on.

It's not losing to another ranked team it's the way it happened. A what = 21-2 run? Or 25-5 or something like that. That's ridiculous. Baylor would still be scoring.

There has been some discussion and varying opinions on this board about Johnson. Since Blair and some other very good coaches are interested in her, I am hoping that Sherri is spending a lot of time recruiting her as well.

We are also recruiting Evans but I have to believe she is a longshot for the Sooners.

I was disappointed in our rebounding and our inability to finish at the rim. After getting a ten point lead we just seemed to forget how to play the game, or do the things that got the lead. A/M went on a 21-1 run and we couldn't hit free throws or lay ups. I personally did not think the Ags were necessarily that much better than us, as we continued to beat our selves. I agree, this team needs to find leadership that can take a game on their back and bring team mates with her. Maddie is close, she needs to be consistent. Kaylon has shown flashes, but she has to quit throwing up bricks and be solid off the glass. I may have more confidence in the future of this team than others. The biggest key is the want to do the dirty work. Make the extra pass. Don't wait til six seconds are on the clock before closing out a quarter, run the offense and get the best shot you can. We need kids that want to rebound and go to the ball. The answer is simple, but you have to have the kids want to. This team can compete for a conference championship, its just how bad do they want it.

I agree totally! We looked pretty good during the 2nd quarter and not very good during the 3rd. This team is far ahead of the team a year ago at this time. We're also missing a very important piece of the puzzle, Gioya. It was good to see her warming up with the team but when she begins to play, it's going to take a good while for her to get back to her play last Jan/Feb.

Lots of good points in what you have posted here, Norm.

I am amazed that Gabbi was the point guard for the International Team that won a gold medal but can't seem to do that for us. I think the key is they asked her to run the team not score. She scored very little last summer. Much like Blair is asking of his pg. We seem to want her to do everything. Manage the team, score with drives, hit lots of 3's, etc. That is not her skill set.

The problem is mainly that Little has disappeared from scoring. She can't hit anything - even when open. That may come later but it is not certain. So we are asking others to score - even though they struggle at crunch time. That is where A&M had an edge over us last night. They have 2 players who can score pretty effectively. We have only one this year - only KK hits a really good percentage of her shots (admitting that on one occasion last night she literally threw it over the entire rim - but I can take that occasionally since she hits such a high percentage).

Once KK leaves the game, we drop so far off in our ability to control the inside..... I like Vivi, but she simply cannot control things for an extended period. She plays too soft and moves too slow. She does hit an occasional really nice shot - and my hope is that with another year of healing she may really step up her game.

Now as to Maddie. I'm frustrated but not ready to give up. I thought at one moment last night that she might be ready to put us on her back and take it to the next level - but then she quit shooting. Think about OSU's leading scorer. She scores by shooting tons of shots. She typically shoots about 7 of 24 or so. Then with a few free throws has 20+ points. Sherri needs to tell Maddie - "I want you to take at least 20 shots every game". It may not work, but what we are doing is not going to work well against teams with lots of height.

And it is far better than letting TT run inside and throw the ball away. I'm sure that frustrates Sherri too, but she seems to think "it didn't work that time, but surely it will next time so I will not put a stop to it". Well, I can assure you that it is NOT going to work next time either. It's just going to be another turnover in effect - even though it gets recorded as a missed shot.

Gabbi has had a few games where she has shot well, but I think she is a better PG to set up the plays and distribute. She could eventually be the leader in a year or two. She is pretty vocal and a true point guard should be a leader. If her role changes I'm not sure as to the leader on this team. No one really stands out. Some have had glimpses from time to time. Little has a lot of heart, even when having as bad a game as this one......but still not a leader to me. Maybe playing A&M got in her head. Trying to do more than what she can to prove something. It didn't work. If I had to pick a player at this moment to lead this team, it would be Maddie, just barely. I'm sure these girls don't wish to lose, but they have got to come together and get better in a LOT of things. FT's and rebounding would be top of the list!

keep in mind it was 2016 point guard Crystal Dangerfield (Uconn) who played alot with the USA team...

Excellent post. Also, why is Treece not getting more playing time? She brings energy to the team. She should be the first sub in for Manning, Little, and Wyatt. Maybe should be starting for one of them.

Treece would also be a bigger body for rebounding purposes. Needed that yesterday.

I started a new thread about Treece just because I think several have seen some good things about her game that can benefit this team. You just mentioned a great one in rebounding.

Wow it's amazing how two people an watch the game and see it so differently. I thought when Ti came in she gave us a great spark. Ortiz is just dribble dribble dribble dribble, I've never seen a point guard play like that. You simply can't compete with really talented athletic teams with a 6'3" post and our level of athleticism.

True. Also, I agree T'ona did better than others here. Also believe McKenna instead of Derica. When you get minutes you play better and think Mckenna could have helped with defense, as well as offense. But don't want to debate it. Just voicing my opinion.

Tatum is the next Gabbi so I don't think that helps.

The motion offense doesn't work well if you aren't in motion. No offense looks particularly good if you are standing around on offense. Maddie and Peyton were in motion. Did anyone pass the ball to them when they got to a spot? Were we only trying to get it inside? Maddie and Peyton are pretty good from three point range if you get it to them when they are open and facing the basket. We didn't get either any good looks in the second half. T'Ona looks to the middle. It is the rim or the post, not a kickout.

We lost. We didn't play well on offense or defense. If you aren't playing well, you look slow and non-athletic. Some criticized out lack of athleticism as compared to North Texas. That's old, and Courtney is overweight. You have to play into a plan, and we didn't. We lost.

Don't disagree with that. If you count the years with Morgan (which I do) as this team not having a real leader, why do you think that is, Syb?

I think Hand was a leader, but she was out so much, it was difficult and then her play diminished in her last year and it was kind of changing of the guard thing.

We do need a Baker Mayfield, that is certain, but I'm not sure we will get it any time soon.
