Capel has not set a foundation to build on in his 1st 4 years. The Griffin years were his big chance to capitalize and upgrade the program and he has so far failed.
Baylor has leaped ahead of OU and Anderson at MU seems to have a more solid program even without any supper star in his tenure. Ford is on track at OSU.
OU could be lumped with I-State, CU and Nebraska in the struggling programs of the Big 12.
BUT, OU can't cut Capel loose right now or we might lose our class of 2010 except for Neal. I imagine there is a tremendous amount of negatives being tossed out by other programs about about Capel's tenure, how long will he last at OU and possible NCAA penalties.
I suppose all Joe C. and OU can do now is cross fingers and tread water for a year or 2.
Anyone have a clear solution to all this outside of a miracle recruiting coup in the next few weeks?

All 3 will beat us next year and as long as Capel is the coach they will all surpass us. Not program wise, but they will all beat us regularly as long as Jeff is head coach.

I reserve the right to change my mind about this if some big recruiting miracle happens, but that would be on the same level as when Moses used the staff to turn water into wine.

Only way to fire Capel would to hire another coach who brings his recruiting class with him and some transfers too.

We should support Coach Capel and have patience. Also, we should quit dwelling on the recent bad news. Try to forget 2009-10. What is past, is past. There is nothing we can do about it.

There is nothing to do now, but move forward with hope and optimism. I am convinced that Coach Capel wants to stay here a long time. He has something to prove, and I wish him the greatest success in building back the program.

I have been negative and cynical in recent months, but there is no reward down that path.

It is what it is. There is nowhere but up from here, but one must have patience. Patience and optimism. Those are the words. Just think how much we will appreciate the good times to come.

Right on 61sooner,the foundation for Capel should have been built his first year or second year & you improve from there.(he did with Blake & I will give him credit for that)Now a year after Blake has left Capel finds himself in a total rebuilding mode again & that is unexceptable at OU.You can"t expect any consistency with mass defections & mass busts in recruiting. That sets square on Coach Capels shoulders...Go Sooners!!!!!!

Great post, Traveler! I could not agree with you more.

I started to put up a post that was similar, but Traveler nailed it. I actually like clean slates, and this program, and this coach, needed it.

We are about to find out how tough we are as fans and how good of a coach Jeff is. Our backs are against the wall and thats when the never quit/ Boomer Sooner swagger has to come out.

Coaches have been winning games forever without the best talent. HCJC needs to nut up and out coach some guys next year. Defense, heart and hussle can overcome some shortcomings. I'm ready to find out what we are made of.

Only a year ago we were all saying how Capel has built a nice foundation and had 3 franchise players to build around for the upcoming year...Capel made some other mistakes in recruiting but had a lot going as far as newcomers already signing in the early period, with TJ and Cam committed to play with Tiny and TMG, things were looking great (sure we all assumed WW was gone anyway)...

Even though Capel needs to take some of the blame on misses with some of the "role" players in the last few years, he cannot control who leaves after 1 yr...i'm pretty sure none of us as well as him thought either of these guys would be one and done, Tiny possibly but it was unlikely...

I think he can get this thing back on track, but patience is going to be needed...He is still going to bring in top notch talent, i just hope he does a better job with those "role" players...those are the ones that will define our success from year to year, the franchise guys just heighten the opportunity to compete for that Final Four...

Also, we should quit dwelling on the recent bad news.

I agree with your post, Traveler, but it's hard to quit dwelling on the bad news when it won't stop coming. One can only put bad news behind you when there's no more bad news.

it would be much easier moving on from this bad news if Capel was filling his roster with top Juco players, but right now he's already on to plan B or plan C in some instances on Juco recruits and he still can't get any takers.
Have fun recruiting to Lloyd Noble when no one is going to be there next year.

And for the record I would like to be positive, just show me something to be positive about.

To his defense, a lot of this stuff happened very late in the recruiting season...its difficult to find out late in the season you have to replace 4 or 5 guys and just go get them...especially from Juco...i personally hope he only gets 2 or 3 Juco guys, those are so much of a crap shoot...at this point, just get the filler players and start beating the pavement hard for the next season...

I have to admit that I'm back to square one with Coach Capel. I honestly have no idea if he can get us turned around. I'm not saying he can't, but I just don't know.

That's a lousy feeling to have after four seasons with a coach, but the past year has been such a disaster -- on the court, off the court, you name it -- that I just don't know what to think. I'm not saying he should be fired or anything like that, but if I'm honest about it, I'm not saying he shouldn't. As I say, I'm back to square one with him, and that leaves me feeling not patient or optimistic, but depressed about our current circumstances and not confident about the future of the program.

I wish I could find cause to feel differently.

I think, now that Tiny is gone, that the "bad news" is behind us. It has all been flushed away. The next news we hear will be about a new signed recruit or two.

I try not to worry about news of recruits we lose out on. They just were not meant to be Sooners.

The three recruits we are bringing in seem to fit the bill as far as what OU "needs" long-term to be successful. Good solid players and citizens. Also, Pledger and Fitzgerald look like they have the potential to be solid role players that stick for all four years [and got their stupid move out of the way early]. Also, we are going to bring in some players, who those guys might be is anybody's guess, but based upon what happened this past season, I expect that they'll be solid citizens. Maybe see who those guys are first, before you reach a conclusion about what will happen?

Bravo. Well said and, I think, spot on. We can't worry too much about next year barring a recruiting miracle over the next few weeks.

I think in two years we will look back on this program cleansing as a very positive happening.

Predicting things is hard, especially about the future. Right now we are in a tough spot program wise. If Joe C. does not thknk Capel can right the ship then pull the plug now. IF he doe have faith in his ability to right the ship then don't worry bout next year and hold on for at least two more years.

Given the level of fan support at the games, this approach should not piss off too many people - even if they think Jeff should go.
