OU-Texas

Can someone who knows explain what a "players only" meeting is? Why do you need one? Why do you need two? Why we seem to have one every year? Do other teams have them? Do they tell the coaches what they did after the meeting? Do some coaches encourage then when they have no idea what to do now? Appreciate any insight.

I suspect that 'team only' meetings aren't uncommon but I have no way of knowing for sure.

I think they are more common when a team feels they aren't performing as well as they should. I can think of a lot of possible reasons a team might want to meet without the coaches. Basically, I think their purpose is to dig deep and figure out what's wrong and what they can each do to fix it. I don't think these type of meetings are about x's and o's. I think they are about chemistry and anything that might be affecting the team's chemistry.

Sherri stressed that we were more "intentional" in this game. Absolutely true. By "intentional" i understand we were intentional, purposeful, in our play as opposed to reactive. They were quicker, player for player, than we are and bigger but our play was deliberately purposeful and that's what we must continue to do.

Always a big win in the Red River Showdown. Karen has more athletic kids on the way Kim for kid Texas is better on paper in the 2016 recruits but that prob applies to the kids on the floor today. Goes to show it takes way more than just talent to win this deep in the season. 17 and 18 will be important for OU to get some game changing kids tough kids that know how to win will get OU back to a final 4

I think everyone agrees that we need to keep recruiting at a high level. But in the discussion of a game where we were down by 6 and then went on a 31-7 run to win by 17, it doesn't seem to make much sense to suggest we don't have "game changing", "tough" kids on the team already. Perhaps a better way to say it is "They need to play with that kind of intensity" all (or at least most) of the time. The biggest question is can they?

And to be fair, Texas did get a bit rattled and missed some shots you would have expected them to hit. The best take away from the game is that even before that 4th quarter (really last 6 minute) rally we played evenly with the 6th ranked team in the country.

It was great to see Peyton get her shot back. And Maddie played a wonderful game on so many levels: rebounding, scoring, assists, blocks, etc.

sweetest,
Cannot get too high after a one big win or big loss.
It was a very good win.
There are still talent issues with this team to compete at a top ten level every night. If your expectation is a team that comes in 3rdor 4th in the Big 12 and is ranked in the low 20s, then no problem. No overhaul needed.
You want to consistently win big 12 titles. OU's got to get more, better players.
Same thing happened in football to Bob. The current roster is kind of stuck in neutral. It's not
tanking by any stretch, but it's not game over game improving either.

Actually I (we) can get as high as we want. I don't appreciate other posters telling me how I should react.

Priceless comment on hornfans.com board!

Our coach stands there and does nothing as refs screwed the heck out of us !!!! Cole raised hell when she thought she wasn't getting calls.....That is why we will never beat Baylor. Refs are afraid of Kim, and know they can get away with cheating with our coach....

Now, let's address why people over 60 do not count as fans???
or kids 15 and under? (so there were REALLY only 200 fans) Now I understand some PEOPLE, no matter age,
might not be interested in the game but enjoy going. Thinking more of youngsters. Am 65 and have been going to games since I was 4 or 5. Of course, nothing for females. I watched the games...talking everything from football to wrestling. 8 of my 9 of great and great-great
nieces and nephews, who are 13 and under, love sports, play sports and watch sports. I mean sit down at the games and watch what is going on and discuss it afterwards. And I know there are many kids just like them.

Oh and the 60 and older. Well, many of them have been following OU from the time Sherri started when the program was still in the toilet. Not me, but have heard some of those people talking.

Sooooo, Banjo, what's up with your comment? :facepalm ;) :)

So tired of the talent deficency comment--- not one team other than Baylor has beaten Texas this season. And we shot 41% and beat them- thats a very average performance. Did they struggle? of course they did- but a lot of shots they missed were contested. We sped them up, slowed them down, and matched their physicality and athleticism- we caused a lot of those misses.

Also why do they have the right to struggle, but when we struggle as we have shooting wise most of the season (assuming that shooting 30-35% as a team fits everyones definition of struggling as a team) we blame it on talent and not "struggling"?

Honestly- when it comes right down to it. This might be the best recruiting job IN THE COUNTRY. What teams out there have found a no-name post player that could physically and mentally dominate the best defensive post player in the nation? Nobody. What teams out there found a no name player that can average around 15+ pts a game (since being truly healthy) in Gioya Carter ? Nobody. What team out there saw TT Edwards becoming the lightning quick- defensive nightmare she has become?? Nobody. Maddie leading us in rebounding, assists, blocks and steals yesterday- if she just starts shooting around 40%- she's arguably an ALL-AMERICAN w all she brings to this team. What teams were after her??? We just punked one of the top 3 most highly recruited teams in the nation yesterday- that doesn't just happen without talent, as Texas has proven- Teams don't just beat them on a regular basis. You don't go 25-2 in the Big 12 by accident, it takes a really talented teams to beat them. (Baylor, Us)

This was an absolutely PHENOMENAL recruiting job. If teams performed based on their high school rankings, we probably wouldn't even make the tournament. Instead we are competing w the top teams in the country. Beat Baylor last year- played them tough this year. Beat Texas twice last year, and were 1-1 this year. That doesn't just magically happen, otherwise more teams would be beating those teams. STOP SAYIN WE HAVE NO TALENT.

womenssports, my point was not about not counting old folk and kids as fans, it was about WHERE THE HECK WERE THE YOUNG AND MIDDLE AGED ADULTS???

I am older than you and have watched Molly (McGuire), Dan (Hodge), Bart (Conner), Tommy (McDonald), Alvan (Adams) play. The crowds then were full of all ages.

I said that if you took those kids and codgers away there would have hardly been anyone in attendance. We codgers and our grandkids are carrying the load.

We certainly do count as fans (I was in the stadium when the golden homers ended our run, as a matter of fact I was listening on the radio to the Pittsburg tie that lead into the streak.) My wife and I have been season ticket holders to Men's and Women's Basketball and Football. we were there when OU Men's Gymnastics won a national championship at Lloyd Noble. I played in the Pep Band when Gar (Heard) was an All American, I marched in the Pride when an unknown sophomore QB for Alabama beat us in the Orange Bowl, Joe (Namath)

I am a fan. Where are the others?

Okay, I get it now. (and I was just messing with you a little and a little serious, but not mad) And I remember Heard but I will concede you are older than me, based on that comment. :) I was 12 when Notre Dame
beat us on "Owen Field" in 1962. It was my first time at a college game.
So much fun, IF we had not lost.

Actually, weren't Peyton and Maddie ranked fairly highly, as was Gabbi?

Yes, the had good rankings. But as we all point out at different times, a high school ranking doesn't mean much in women's basketball.

I certainly enjoyed the game -- and, of course, another critical game and it's not on television because it's a game where they burn their couches and grandma has to hold the television antennas outside on the roof of the house with tin foil between them.

Not having this game on TV is unforgivable. Just what the heck is the athletic department doing? I know, Im getting spoiled on having the games on tv.

It just irks me that this late in the season in a critical game with meaning for the post season we have to listen like we're all a bunch of 1930s hicks hanging on the scrambled fuzz of radio signals.

The game was on TV in Oklahoma. If it wasn't on TV out of state, I don't think you can blame the OU Athletic department for that. Blame the conference and the networks.

LOL. I believe OH was referring to this week's game at WVU.

I think Texas was still playing at a high level for the first five minutes of the fourth quarter. It's just that their long-range shots weren't going in, and the interior defense was forcing some uncomfortable shots. It seems interesting that Kay Kay appeared intimidated by Boyette, but Boyette seemed to have difficulty shooting over Kay Kay and Vivi. Her hands weren't following through due to the fact that Kay Kay and Vivi had their hands up, and it left most of her shots just a bit short. The Texas posts seemed more afraid of our posts than we were of them. But, McCarty was a fireball of emotion until the end.

At about three minutes, they did come apart a bit, attempting bad shots once they fell behind by about ten. But, we were guarding the shooters, and they really weren't open. But, I think they still had some confidence at the five minute mark.

What we did not see against Texas were a lot of bad plays. After every game since BYU, I have often shouted at the TV as someone made a lazy pass or took and off balance shot. It might have been someone driving to the paint once more, despite the fact that they had turned it over every time they had done it, or Kay Kay reaching into or over an opponent's arms. Kay Kay did have a couple of reach in fouls. But, she played fairly solidly. Gabbi didn't make the spaced out mistakes. We acted like we belonged.

When we do that, we are pretty good. We don't have to shoot lights out if our mental lights are on. We never really lost it against Texas.

Athleticism? I think Kay Kay and Vivi are both more athletic than the Texas posts, just not as tall. Vivi will be a lot better than any of them. Maddie had her way with the Texas forwards and guards. She is deceptively fast, and her game is beginning to come together. Now, if she and Peyton can just begin to shoot the way they had done in the past. Gioya adds a short range jumper. Texas has some "athletic" guards in the sense that they are quick. But, they don't play basketball all that well. McCarty does. Sanders always hurt us. Felisha Gibbs was an athlete.
