OU vs Houston Baptist now on FSOK

By far the deepest team we’ve had in years and years. Exciting times.

Time will tell if we're a legit 10-deep. We've had many years going into January thinking we could be 10 deep, and end up disappointed every time. The 1990 team was the deepest ever, and is always going to be the bar. However, it is encouraging that we have 5 guys who could come off the bench, and in a given day, be the reason we win a particular game.

Sometimes being deep just means your starters aren’t very good. I don’t think that’s the case here, but right now our starters aren’t really playing that good together. You could tell Lon is still trying to figure out what he has in that second group.

Disagree 100%

Aren’t playing that good together? They had one clunker game vs Xavier. Reaves and manek both playing like 1st teamers.

Adjusting to Mo, Victor getting back late bc of covid. 2 week shut down 17 days before the season.

They let 1-6 Houston Baptist embarrass them in the first half. They aren’t playing well on offense and are absolutely horrid on defense. Lon needs to figure this out.

Some folks are acting like our second 5 beat ku...

Yes I’m glad they bumped up the intensity and double the margin but man... let’s be realistic. This team HB is not good.

I’d be more upset our first 5 laid an egg vs the second 5 did great.

Yes, it’s a win...I’m happy but not going over the top.

Only one. And he's always like that. Take him for what he's worth.

HBU does one thing very well -- shoot threes. Not just against us -- they average 9.4 made per game; that's better than every team in the Big 12 save Baylor.

In three-point percentage, they rank 22nd in the country (40.32), behind just one Big 12 team -- Baylor. And their non-conference strength of schedule is 43, which ranks better than any Big 12 team except WVU, so they haven't put up those stats against weak sisters.

They're not good and we played a poor first half, but they do shoot threes well. At least they have in the eight games they've played so far.

As for us not playing well on offense, we trail only Baylor among Big 12 teams in assists per game. We're also second in the conference in shooting percentage, again behind Baylor. In points per game, we're 29th in the country (85.3), which puts us second in the conference, again behind Baylor. Our percentage from deep ranks third in the conference, behind Baylor and KU.

Our nonconference SOS is admittedly weak, but the same is true of most of the teams in the conference. WVU is the only team in the top 50, while KU and texas come in in the second 50. Everyone else is lower than 100.

All that said, the day I can't find a way to enjoy a 19-point win over even a team like HBU is the day I'll turn in my fan card and look for entertainment elsewhere.

I was away with family on Saturday and unfortunately I recorded it. That may have been the worst basketball game i've ever seen. Not sure what was wrong with our first team, they looked like they didn't want to be there. This team has a long way to go. I really, really hope they wake up and find something before tomorrow night. Sheesh that was ugly!

Voice of reason. Thanks sky.

Re Victor: He ( and Hill) are really improved this year. Vic earned his first foul, then all the rest were totally phantom. He will be a very good back up 5 this year.

Re Kauth: Vastly improved and gives us a competitive 5 against anyone.

Re Starters vs. reserves: Starters give us our best chance to win against good teams. Reserves are just to a man better athletes and play better defense. Take away transition points off of defense, and they are not nearly as good offensively as starters.

Deepest team in recent memory. I like this team, and have thought they would be better than most on here believe. Too early to tell, but that prognostication may end up being true. Lon typically does well with senior laden teams and he has one. This team is also deeper, and he has some shooters (phipps and moj) he can bring in to get us out of an offensive slump when needed.

Rest of the big twelve: Kansas, TTech, OSU, Texas all look like good teams but certainly aren't super teams. Kansas is good but this isn't one of their best teams, same with TTech. WV looks scary good to me. Just haven't watched Baylor enough to form an opinion.

The TTech game tuesday will tell us something about our team.

I agree with most here: nothing to panic about. HBU is better than their record, they can shoot it, and they have played good competition. We didn't blow their doors off, but no one's beat them by 50, and Lon played the entire roster. He put the walk-ons in with 3 minutes left when we were up 22 or so.

My biggest concern is the same thing that bit us at Xavier. Our first team is not putting enough pressure on opposing guards. Not pressuring the ball handler, not fighting over screens, not running through the passing lanes.

Allowing teams to rotate the ball for good shots is a killer in a good league.

embarrass is a bit strong .. and saying they are not playing well on Offense is just simply not true

Too much logic for this crowd to handle.

Well said, pnkranger! I shake my head in disbelief sometimes when a few here get all bent out of shape if our players are criticized for anything at all. Missing shots is not always something you can control. Playing defense is a different story entirely. Good defense is mostly about desire, toughness, and playing through pain when you’re exhausted.

Our starters deserved the criticism they received during the HBU game, just as the second unit deserved high praise for showing them what “hustle and heart” really means. If our starters play the same way against Tech tomorrow night, the game will be over at the half. I’m hoping they learned from that experience.

It’s not that guys can’t be criticized it’s acting like this team is 1-7 like HBU....

You know things are good when people are pissed about a 20 point win.
