OU vs OU

If you will remember what DRob was like as a freshman, she was all talent with little discipline. She might throw the ball into the stands. She couldn't hit layups or free throws. Wouldn't even try a jump shot until late in her junior year. Never shot a three.

Shaina is much further along than DRob was at this stage. What she doesn't have is a group of seven or eight upperclassmen to take center stage while she learns. The three freshmen have been thrown into the fire because they are, other than Vivi, Maddie, and Gabbi, all we have. LaNesia still isn't really a high D-1 performer. Penzo may actually be more valuable by the end of the year.

Mandy didn't play a high level of AAU ball. She is maybe a step show. But, I'm not so sure. She is as lost as a fawn in a thunderstorm when she runs into better teams. I think we have to wait to see if she develops. She has done a few things which say she has more than she has shown. She is quick to put up an offensive board. She isn't bad on the offensive boards. I don't think she knows how to guard a stroller. Let's see how much and how fast she learns.

If Ana continues to grow, she is someone that I see as a lot like Ionescu, who has been in the fire. Ana was a dead-eye in HS. So far, she is inconsistent in college. But, the instincts are excellent, and the stroke is good. She has been missing even free throws. I think she was six of six tonight.

Both Shaina and Ana have hands that play defense. They are quick with their hands. Ana is also quick with her feet. But, she hasn't been taught yet how to guard her position. She's being asked to learn a lot in a hurry.

Let's start talking in April.

No matter if wee shoot better, cutting way down on turnovers and whatever else , none of that matters because we dont play defense, dont know and dont learn. I'm beginning to think thaty the staff plays little or no attention to it. I'd rather not think that they dont know how to coach it or dont caree.

Talk to me about bad defense when we shoot better than one of twenty-one from three.

Since our girls still do a lot of standing around in what Sherri calls a motion offense, I would like to see both Manning and Ana go away from the 3 pointers so much... Manning should be driving to the rim more then she does, at her size and skill set she could make a living at the line. Ana has a good offensive instincts, and some of the best foot work I’ve seen form a guard in a long time, she should look to score from mid rage more and create scoring opportunities for herself...

Gabbi gives it her all, but when her shot isn’t falling she disappears, she’s small and not the best defender, and still holds on to the ball to long at times...

We got 29 Free Throw attempts, Oregon has only 4, please don't blame the Officals.

The Officals had zero to do with the outcome, no excuses for our team.

They shot fewer free shots because we didn't contest their shots, our defense was that bad.

It was still a poorly officiated game. Didn't cost us the game but still bad.

I still don’t understand how a team that likes to shoot 3’s got that many off vs The Sooners? The same way Depaul did..

Way to early but yeah..looks like any other OU team for the last few years

Apparently OUr coach and her staff can't figure it out either.

Sherri doesn’t have the shooters to play the game she wants, we lose Ortiz after this season so unless Ana improves, some adjustments will have to be made going into next season... This is where losing a said to be great shooter like Rich really hurts. Maybe Tatum and Robertson will be good/ great shooter next season, Sherri normally likes to have 2-3 kids on the floor who can shot at one time...

We will need a lot of accurate shooters to cover for the pitiful defense that is our norm.

This issue of team's hitting 3 point shots was one of the points I made in an earlier thread. For some reason our coaches teach our defensive players to (intentionally) leave opponent 3 point shooters wide open in the corners.

I was hoping against hope that they would finally understand that such an approach is a terrible concept. Watch the next game. Frequently when an opposing player moves to one of the corners, our defender almost immediately heads for the lane, leaving said player wide open.

Once it became clear that such an approach would once again be practiced this year, I knew we would struggle with that. And we have. Opposing coaches have to be laughing at us, and set their offenses to take advantage of it.

You will notice that it is rare when an opponent just leaves our shooters wide open. For good reason. But us? We do it a regular basis. And continually pay a price for it.

Leaving the corners open and guarding the line from 4 to 6 feet back from the shooter the majority of the time are my two biggest gripes. We even guard the hot shooters from more than arms length away much of the time. Puzzling.
