OU vs TCU

We have used that 2 point guard line-up recently, but not against TCU. I think that Coach was so disappointed with Gabbi's play that there was no way she was getting back in the game. I was surprised when they started fouling at the end that we didn't take T'ona (a 54% free throw shooter) out. But I guess she had earned her way.

I think there were a lot of messages being sent last night, as well as perhaps in recent games. Sherri has done this in the past (sitting Kay Kay at Arkansas last year). I get the impression that she is doing it more this year. I may go back and look at the minutes played in specific games relative to occurrences at some point.

If she is sending the messages that I think she is, it may be because she, for the first time recently, has someone on the bench on whom she can count. We have at least eight or nine contributors who can actually contribute. Everyone has had their moment in the sun.

I don't know exactly what messages were being sent last night, but the alternation of Maddie and McKenna on offense and defense was some sort of very loud message. Maybe they understood. I didn't. McKenna is not a good defender yet, and Maddie is one of our best. So, it doesn't make sense for it to be an offense/defense thing. It may relate to how Maddie was used and what she did with it. They put Maddie at a high post a lot last night, and most of it was wasted. Maddie made some mistakes shooting and passing from that position. I thought they would use that to make her a distributor. She used it only to shoot or feed Kay Kay (often badly).

We know what Gabbi can do. But, she seems very stubborn in doing exactly what has got her some time on the bench. All she really needs to do is to settle down. Mixed in with the superlatives, T'Ona also made some really dumb mistakes that she continues to make. But, Sherri didn't seem as agitated about those.

I think it was the Kansas game in which Sherri ripped into McKenna very angrily when she called timeout after some mistakes by McKenna. It was probably the most agitated that I have seen Sherri. Last night, she absorbed McKenna's mistakes which were the same.

I don't begin to know what she has told each to do. But, she seems inclined to make a point this year. She has the depth to do it.

McKenna would seem to be physically stronger than Maddie. Might it have something to do with that?

Possibly. But, if you watch them rebound, Maddie is more inclined to get the rebound and rip it out of there than McKenna. McKenna loses a lot after she has them. They get ripped from her. Maddie has been second in rebounding in most of the recent games, probably averaging about seven recently.

Sherri can get very agitated at times. Many times it doesn't show on TV but from one that attends most every home game pretty close behind the scorer's table, I've seen her very irritated, with players AND officials. After watching games recorded back at home, this doesn't come across very often. She was FURIOUS at Vivi in one of the early games as it looked like Vivi popped off at her. I was really surprised Vivi returned to the game. She was HOT!

TT brings energy and the "want to" and is a good defender.....She needs more minutes.. Just keep working on those free throws, please !!!!

I think everyone agrees that T'ona has significantly improved from last year. Most have seen recent improvement in Treece as well. Is it possible that LaNesia might be the next one to show improvement? Sherri apparently likes her.

I have no problem with Treece's defense. She doesn't always stop a drive but she stays with her opponent well on the drive and stays in position to make the shot hard.

Also you may have noticed that Sherri was alternating Treece and Maddie down the stretch when we were coming back. Maddie for offense and Treece for defense.

Not saying that Treece is as athletic as Maddie but she is pretty mobile for a 6-4 player. I like her game. She can hit the outside shot, from mid-range and has the size to score with her back to the hoop. She is a good passer and doesn't make a lot of bad decisions with her passes; seems to find the open player. She blocks a few shots (10th in minutes played and 4th in blocked shots) and gets rebounds.

She needs to be more agressive on the boards. She positions herself pretty well and uses her size to block out but does not agressively fight to get position on the boards as say like Joanna McFarland did.

I think we become a better team when Treece is on the floor at least 20 minutes a game.

Full disclosure before I post. I am a big Derica Wyatt fan. I understand she is not as quick as most, but since several compare her to Gabbi and don't think both should be on the floor at the same time, go to their season stats. I am not going to post them, but go look at them. Right down the line they are neck and neck in all areas except one. Derica has 10 fewer turnovers than Gabbi. Derica is very solid fundamentally, one of three kids I see that knows how to pump fake, and plays good solid gap defense. She doesn't get you beat. Obviously with Gioya struggling to get back into the line up, she has earned the right from her coaches and from daily practice to be in the starting line up. However, I will also be the first to say, I like when we go big with Kaylon, McKenna, and Maddie in the line up. To me it looks like Sherri is seeing what combinations work well against all situations. Last night was the start of a big push to keep the best performers on the floor. She thought enough of Derica to leave her out on the floor for 38 mins. If she isn't pulling her share of the load, then she also should see the bench. Just one old man's opinion for what its worth.

Good post! Derica has taken a big step forward this year in her play. She's shooting 35% on 3s and she's taken the second most on the team. She finally seems to be just shooting when she's open and not thinking about it. Just a natural motion. She had a huge steal late in the game yesterday as well. She's a positive on this team. Of course, not having Gioya has slowed the progress a little but if Gioya can get back to near normal by March it should be huge for this team. I think consistency is the biggest issue facing this team and playing so many this year has probably affected developing consistency. On the other hand IMO, one of the strong suits of this team is versatility in having many different combinations to use against different teams.

I think this team is close to turning the corner, if they can become consistent. The second quarter against A&M, I thought we looked very strong. There were times against Hypocrite U that we looked really strong as well. The 4th quarter against Washington we looked good.

Our fouling (whom most of us thought needed improvement) has gone from an average of about 21 fouls per game last year to about 16 fpg. That's pretty good improvement.

I think as this season progresses and if we have continued improvement in shooting and more consistency we can have a very good run in the tourney. Outside of UConn, I haven't seen anyone totally dominating and can be beat on any given night. I think we're headed in the right direction.

Derica may be the most improved player from last year. JMHO. She looks more relaxed and is a lot more confident in herself.

One thing Sherri did was bring Maddie to the high post (as opposed BTA) which I liked even though it didn't produce the scoring it could have. Maddie undersells herself and she routinely turns down good scoring opportunities. When the guards passed to her at the high post, if she would have quickly turned and shot a jump shot, she could have had that shot time and time again because with her height, length, and jumping ability, it would be difficult, if not impossible, for most teams to defend. From the high post, I believe Maddie can make that shot close to 50% of the time. But, Maddie's first thought is, who can I pass to. She needs to develop a Buddy Hield mentality and score the basketball when open. I truly believe she has the ability to score 18-20 points per game. Maddie stops scoring when a defender puts a hand in her face. Whitney Hand was not as athletic as Maddie but she was smart. If you didn't guard her she would shoot. If you did guard her, she faked and got by her defender and took a jump shot. With Maddie's athleticism, it should be even easier for her to do the same thing. The only thing lacking is confidence in herself. People have mentioned the improvement of Kaylon, T'ona, Derica, Treece, etc. I believe the one person who is capable of the greatest improvement on the team because of her ceiling is Maddie. She is also capable of better defense. I believe if she becomes a take charge player on the offensive end, it would also carry over to the defensive end. She can do it. The question is, will she.

I agree. TT had moments of playing well last year, but Derica has made the biggest improvement.
