It is hard to evaluate Sherri. She has a way of bouncing back and she definitely lifted the Sooners to national prominence. She is a credit to the university.
She seems to be a good coach but the great ones do not have teams that play like their hair is on fire one game and like they have gone 48 hours without sleep or food the next game. That rarely if ever happens to Geno's or Muffins teams or Pat Summits in the past.
My biggest complaint at this time is the bad judgment by the players. Passes that have little or no hope of connecting. Shots well behind the NBA arc or at bad angles near the basket. Drives and passes into double and triple team. I know she likes her players to take risks but at times they are so close to the edge they fall off.
I have always faulted her for not using her depth but she is using it on steriods this year and has begun to develop a more consistent pattern. Getting Carter back has really helped.
A lot of people give her a lot of grief about recruiting maybe because she has gone on record not liking recruiting. But she has a McD all-american coming in along with a player who seems to be breaking out. Llanusa should really also have a shot at all-american and has a lot of game. Now if she can fill out that 17 class and land Murcer in 18 we could be in good shape. I also like the girl out of Kentucky. I still don't understand the dropping of the summer program.
We do a good job of uptempo when we can rebound but we are also inconsistent there and have big rebounders like Ortiz and Edwards leading the team at times.
I think with the depth we have we could play a lot more full and half court pressure defense. But I am partial to pressure defense. I believe that pressure defenses could add to our up tempo offense
We are also inconsistent in our half court offense. Sometimes we move around well and at other times no one is moving but the one with the ball. We run some brilliant out of bounds plays but at times we have a hard time getting open for good shots. Little has a particularly hard time and then when she gets open she doesn't shoot with confidence. I don't understand why she doesn't shoot more pull up jumpers. She has a quick first step but always passes off after penetrating to 8-10 feet from the basket. she has great short range touch and if she started pulling up and nailing short jumpers she would find herself open more often from behind the arc.
If Sherri can get her team to play with more consistency we could be tough this year, especially if what we saw from Carter against Tech is what we will see from now on. If not it is concievable that we would finish behind not only Texas and Baylor but also West Virginia and Oklahoma State, Uggg
