Our Problem is Recruiting

My gripe isn't with the recruiting, or any of the individual players, but consistency. Any team has good, better, and worse games. BUT we have 13 decent players, different talents and skills, and there is no way we should look this way against a mediocre team. We missed inside shots, 0 for 7 on 3's in the second half, shot pooly at the free throw line, couldn't defend the pick and roll, did not rebound well, and most importantly, North Texas played with more composure and confidence in OUR gym than we did. And we did not gather ourselves and put on a spurt in the second half/ 4th quarter to win the game.
It was a poor performance that was more than mental, more than physical, more than players, more than just coaching. We had better players, and we did not win.
Correct the course of the season, or this could be another disappointing year.

Lol i just read that we need a stretch 4 thats about 6'1, 6'2..... ummm. I think we have one?? The only thing that needed to happen was the post players finishing shots that they practice day in, day out and we would of won by 30.

Maddie at the 4 is a complete advantage for us.

Let it play out, we looked tired. We weren't there mentally. I do think that we missed Gioya's physicality, but I think we will adjust. I think this will force Maddie and Gabbi to take on greater roles and we will be better for it in the end.

Some of us have talked about this a lot but the problem continues. We have to have better players to keep up with Texas and Baylor. Period. I know that some on here disagree. That's fine but, we stopped contacting Richards which makes absolutely no sense. We can't impress Wilson who would be starting right now if we had her. But, the staff keeps falling in love with players who can't play. Why??? Who is making those decisions? Bob Stoop had that problem and he cleaned house with positive results. I think it's time for Sherri to consider the same thing. Insanity is doing the same thing and expecting different results. I understand some players will have bad shooting nights. I don't understand why we don't have capable backups who can come in and score. Losing to a bad N. Texas team should get Sherri's attention. Let's hope it does.

You may have hit the nail on the head

Are you still here on an OU board when you are obviously not an OU fan. Of course, neither is Norm.

Do you not understand the concept of social media? Just in case.

I don't think S.C. can reel in the top players. I dunno if these young ladies just don't like her or what.

Sherri has said that recruiting is not something she particularly likes. That could be the answer.

Actually, Spock brought up something that tends to prevail in the social media, or current media at large. There is a propensity for negativity. In general, people say things in anonymity of a message board that they would never say in public. You don't see a lot of increase on a message board after a win. People show up in droves after a loss.

There are posters that we never see during a typical winning streak. After a loss, almost every loss, a great influx of the negative posts will flood the board. If these comments were made in public in the presence of coaches, they would probably be subject to such derision that they would remain silent. Here, they are safe to expound.

It is somewhat like the public's love of conflict in the media in general. Feel good stories are only presented on Christmas. It's not Christmas very often on message boards.

I have seen OU Fans voice concerns on here about the coaching staff "not recruiting", "not staying in contact", "not building relationships", etc on this board. My own experience through the recruiting of my daughter has been remarkable. They have stayed in contact on a regular basis, attend max allowed games, summer games and have made her feel like she is already a part of the OU Family.

My daughter loves SC and every coach on the staff. They have checked on her when she battled an injury, lifted her up when she had a tough loss and have shown me that they genuinely care about her as a person, not just a player. I don't know anyone else's experience, but ours has been truly great!

And I also understand the concept of only social media that is approved by Sybarite. I disdain the latter. Much better to exchange ideas than to muffle them.

I think the problem we have is consistency. I think Sherri is a very good coach but not "Great". By saying that, I mean in order to become a great coach you must have consistency with your team especially on the recruiting side.

I'll say we will continue to be mediocre and settle until we hit another recruiting Homerun. Everyone else especially in our conference is doing it, why haven't we?
We need something to put us over the edge. We cannot always live by the 3pt shot because eventually we will die by it. Something has got to change within Sooner Basketball team somewhere. I have seen no change. Step out of her comfort zone for a change.

That's the kind of report that's refreshing to hear!

About a decade ago, I snuck into an ESPN.com chat with Sherri Coale and bombarded it with questions. When I got one through, it was about how to sustain the success she had early on at OU. Her answer was that it was all about recruiting.

Alas, one of our top in-state talents is likely headed elsewhere later today and I haven't really been excited about a recruit since Danielle Robinson and Whitney Hand.

I love OU and I love Sherri Coale. My expectations off court are the same as always, that our team and coaching staff will continue to make the community proud. On-court, I no longer expect Big 12 championships, deep NCAA runs, etc. Those expectations are now for the men's side of Lloyd Noble

Wonderful to hear Soonerfan. That matches exactly my knowledge about Sherri, Jan, and the other staff members. I have never been more excited about folks we are recruiting - and those we just signed. Sherri Coale is as trustworthy - and as fine a role model - as any coach in America - and there is no better characteristic for a recruit to look for than that.

Thanks for your post.

who is this Stretch 4 that we currently have other then Kellogg? You'll notice Manning is listed as a GUARD not a FORWARD...
