Outside shooting

We only have two starters who can shoot from the outside...Morgan and Aaryn. Off the bench we have Derica who is shooting 40% BTA. We are much more dangerous inside of 15 feet. That makes me wonder why opposing coaches don't sag off the other players and dare them to shoot. Likewise, I notice that we defend poor shooters to the 3 pt line. I remember Doug Gottlieb was a very poor outside shooter at OSU and teams would sag inside to the free throw line and he still wouldn't shoot.

Does anyone have any thoughts about why women's coaches don't back off poor shooters more and protect the inside?

I kind of thought that they were laying off of most of our shooters. The Marist defense appeared to be to station one person following Vegas everywhere, and three people forming a circle around the basket to prevent drives. They seemed to know that we weren't going to shoot out there unless it was Vegas.

For the most part, Sharane and Gioya seem to have enough room to shoot long twos, much less threes. They tend to follow Morgan more. But, they aren't killing themselves to guard anyone out there except Vegas. It was interesting that they put someone with Derica when she came in the game.

Most teams seem to play us somewhat similarly. They aren't guarding Gioya and Sharane outside much. Sometimes, they lay off Morgan because she doesn't shoot that much. It's guard Vegas and try to keep the interior tight.

There are some teams that we let shoot at will from outside: K-State, for example.

I suspect that we make them a lot more in practice... then get to gameday and bonk-bonk-bonk. Probably the same with free throws.

I volunteer to be the Happy Gilmore heckler if they need to simulate the gameday experience a bit more in practice :)

All generalizations are false. This one is more false that most. I remember about the same time Stacey Dales was coming into her own, Texas Tech signed the number one point guard in the country named Erin Grant. Grant was a great penetrator and distributor, but she had no outside shot. We, as well as other teams soon learned to sag off of Grant, and that began Tech's descent from the heights of glory. People played a step back from D-Rob also, respecting her first step a lot more than her outside shot.

Also, this year we defended a poor-shooting Tech team by playing defense with all 5 players having one foot in the paint.

Last year, both Kornet and Campbell demonstrated an ability to hit the trey. I think opposing teams don't wan't to give them a chance to find that shot again.

I nominate Badger to be our "heckler", bring signs!!!!

I don't know why our 3-point shooters basically suck this year, but they do. Sharane showed us Saturday what a very good mid range shooter she is, to go with her drives to the basket. She needs to do more of that. Derica needs to get more involved and take the three when she can, but become more of a threat inside the arc. I would much rather we move the ball around and get to the 12 to 15 foot range for shots and make the defense play us honest, then look for the 3. There are too may good coaches in our conference and they will exploit our weakness to score from the arc if all we do is sit and do nothing. We have seen how well these kids can play, they need to get back to having fun and playing basketball instead of thinking too much and forcing things that aren't there.

Tango, I disagree with you. Many generalizations are completely true. I could give you several examples, but that moves us off the topic of the team and basketball.

Also, I completely disagree that Kornet has "proven" she can hit the 3, because 9 times out of 10 she isn't. Kornet is virtually no threat to score at this point. So, teams sag off of her almost ALL the time.

Other than, that, we have some agreement.

They sag off of Morgan too because she won't ever shoot from outside anymore and they sag f of Sharane because she hasn't been hitting mid-range to 3 point shots anywhere like she did the last half of last season.

So opponents double AE and sag in or help on Griffin and that leaves really only Sharane on the drive or Morgan on the drive.

Not exactly a winning offense.

Morgan needs to be taking 5-8 shots per game from mid-range or 3. She will hit them when she gets her touch back. That will also open up easier drives for her. Frankly, her ability to shoot the 3 and drive is why I think she should be playing the 3 and Carter/Edwards should be starting at point.

Sharane just needs to keep shooting. Her touch will come back.

I agree with all who said Derica has to move and shoot more. She'll score 10 points a game if se does that.

If we could just do that, the inside will open like the Red Sea before Moses and Morgan/AE/Carter/Edwards/Sharane could skip to the basket for layups wiwthout fail

Does anyone know where I can find cheap WVU gear in time for next Saturday's game? I think that movie's heckler is likely very close to WVU fans:

You're gonna need a blanket and suntan lotion, cause you're never gonna get off that beach, just like the way you never got into the NHL... you jacka$$!

You will not make this putt... you jacka$$!

Hey Gilmore, you suck ya jacka$$.

I like the way you think. They need to be more proactive and play a little smarter.
