COLUMBIA | Matt Painter will wait for another day to decide whether he wants to remain the men’s basketball coach at his alma mater, Purdue, or take the vacant opening at Missouri.
According to a source with knowledge of the meeting between Painter and Missouri athletic director Mike Alden on Tuesday morning in Orlando, Fla., Painter listened to Missouri, did not say yes or no, and now is pondering what his decision will be.
“The ball is in his court,” the source told The Star. “Purdue has come up with more money (reports in Indiana say $2.3 million). They don’t want to lose him.”
Will that sway Painter to stay at Purdue?
“I have no idea,” the source said. “He has genuine interest in the job. But he has leverage. I think he’s looking at the Xs and Os, the long term and short term.”
While Missouri was initially believed to be offering between $2 million and $2.3 million a year to Painter, The Star’s source said he believed MU would be willing to go higher to assure they get the man they have identified as their No. 1 target to replace Mike Anderson.
“This guy is going about it the way a guy we want to hire is going about it,” the source said. “While it may be frustrating, if he decides to come here it will be a long-term decision. He’s doing his due diligence. If the Missouri job is a better job, he’ll take it.”
Alden flew to Orlando on Tuesday morning, where Painter and his family were on vacation. Alden was believed to be returning to Columbia on Tuesday afternoon.
Before Alden’s plane ever took off, MU officials called reporters who had assembled at Jefferson City Memorial Airport to warn them of two things — that Painter would not be on that airplane, and not to read anything into that in either a positive or negative fashion.
