Good grief people, come in off the ledge. Trust your AD already, the process takes time. I assume OU won't make the same mistake again and hire a East Coast guy with zero ties to this part of the country. Capel was a fish out of water in these parts. Would OU hire a football coach with no experience recruiting in Texas?

The coaches OU has targeted might still be coaching. OU has a list of 5-10 or we already have a deal in place and the guy is still coaching.

I won't love the hire if it is the UConn girls coach he doesn't know this region for recruiting. Another fish out of water.

I agree it takes time. It is also complicated by the fact that at least some of our targets are still coaching. Several posters will likely commit suicide before the process of hiring a new coach is complete....

Take all the time you need Joe. Just make sure you make a better hire than the last. Next year is not that important, but after that it needs to get much better.

Am I in the Twilight Zone? Butter aren't u supposed to be a Debbie Downer?

Good post and I agree

If boren, Joe etc were happy with statu quo JC would still be here.

We may not get all the qualities we want but it will be different than Capel.

It will be someone with a combination of

More expertise and X and O
Better ties to the area
Better ties to aau in the area

Let the process work itself out.

Stoops didn't have any experience recruiting in Texas. However, his first hire for asst. coaches was Bobby Jack Wright who has been known for years as a stellar Texas recruiter.

Honestly, the longer it takes, probably the better, the Marquette buy-out stuff sort of bugs me, but if it was a money thing, Castiglione would have given Capel another year. For some reason (probably wishful thinking), I really get the feeling that we are going to throw some serious $$$ at someone to get this program back of the ground.

I just jumped off my daughters Little Tikes doll house, does that count???Go Sooners!!!!!

I'm not panicking, but it didn't take Texas Tech very long to hire their coach. Just sayin'...

I agree with you, but Tech, IMO, has to take a reach at a hire because they are Taco Tech. They don't have the success we've enjoyed in Norman and the United arena is nice, but I think we have them beat on other facilities as well as administration, support, etc.

They also didn't have to pay a buyout, if I remember correctly. Wasn't this the last year of Knight's contract? Maybe I'm wrong on this one.

I will also add them getting Gillispie for the small amount of 800K tells me they weren't bidding against anyone else, so we weren't interested. Or, Boren wasn't interested.

I seriously doubt Buzz's buyout is $2.5 million. Remember buyouts cut both ways and is a cost to the school if they want to make a change. I would expect it to range from $1 million to $2 million. High enough to make it hard for him to leave but not too hard to fire him if he doesn't do well.

The other thing to remember is that he has only been head coach for 3 years and no one has made a run at him before. So Marquette hasn't needed much of a firewall to keep him there.

Thats because Texas Tech has no trouble hiring someone who might kill someone in a drunk driving car crash. Im glad we didnt hire that guy.

Wrong Slim. Stoops cut his coaching teeth at KSU under Synder. They raided TX and more importantly Oklahoma PLus he coached in the Big 12 against everyone. Stoops had a big 12 O and D Cord. already onboard when he took the job with coaching ties in the big 12 region.

I may be wrong, but Stoops didn't recruit Texas when he was at KSU. That's why he hired BJW so early after getting the job.

They raided Oklahoma more than Texas and they made a killing on JUCO players.

People do turn their lives around, you know. Alcoholics gets sober and stay that way (and teetotalers sometimes take their first drink and fall rapidly down the rabbit hole). And I'm not in any way making light of drunk driving, but anyone we hire could kill someone when behind the wheel, by talking on his cellphone or being distracted by a pretty girl or reaching into the back seat to the quiet the kids or falling asleep behind the wheel. It happens every day.

Gillespie says he's sober; I have no idea one way or the other. But I won't be the least bit surprised if he gets the Red Raiders on track, and quickly.
