Was a good basketball school? The entire upper bowl was dark and empty and a lot of the lower area had empty seats. Interesting

This is happening all over the country. College basketball is dying as a draw.

The product is pretty poor. It's hard to watch when you get used to seeing Lebron, Kobe, Durant, Carmelo, Zach Randolph, etc

I'll take a good college bball game over a Nba game anyday of the week. Nba is awful to watch most the time, all about pick and roll and mismatches. Not much team bball being played. Just awful defense it pains me to watch. Just pay attention to most defensive effort in the nba, just pathetic.

:clap

The "March Madness" behemoth is killing college basketball. There is zero interest in the regular season anymore.

This isn't the first time the NBA has had star power. If college basketball could draw crowds while Bird/Magic/Jordan were doing their thing, you can't blame the current NBA crop for what is going on.

You make a good point. And I fear that college football is making its first steps in that same direction.

Defense in the NBA is INCREDIBLE.
It always amazes me to see all the people spout off about how bad defenses in the NBA are, I guess because a lot of points are scored.

A lot of points are scored because these guys are incredible shot makers.

I think it's a combination of the NBA being big, and the one-and-done rule. What made college basketball so appealing in the past was the badass teams, not badass players. By that I mean, in ten years, we won't remember UK's championship team from last year. Maybe that MKG was on there, but aside from that, they were just a group of underclassmen who came in, dominated, then left. It's like watching prep ball. But we'll always remember the Hinrich and Collison teams at KU; Dixon and Wilcox at Maryland; and Jay Williams and Battier at Duke, to name three.

The best shot for college basketball to become nationally exciting again is either (a) ditch one-and-done (I would prefer baseball rules, where you can enter out of high school, but if you go to college you have to stay for 2-3 years); or (b) for these NBA prep schools to suck, so that the "revolving door of players" style of recruiting will die off.

I always laugh at the "no defense" in the NBA thing, they actually have to relax the rules to get points scored.

There's no continuity due to the one and done rule. So few college stars are developed beyond one year in the ncaas. We need to implement the college baseball system!!!

Womens basketball seems to be the bigger draw in communities among retirees, alumni, casual fans, etc. A few reasons might be:

- The coach has been at the program longer
- The program has done more to connect with the community via service projects and participation in community events
- The players don't leave early for the pros and do not transfer/quit as often
- The tickets are more affordable
- The games are not scheduled at odd times to benefit TV
- The games are not televised as often, encouraging attendance
- Less off-court issues that alienates fans from the program/players/coaches

Agree completely.

I was in a library today doing research. That involved scanning through microfilm of early-'80s newspapers. I came across several articles about Mizzou games vs. Tisdale-led OU teams, the Stipo/Sundvold/Frazier Mizzou teams, matchups between the Jordan-led UNC team of '83-'84 and the post-Stipo Mizzou squad (not a great team, but played UNC close in Carolina), etc. I scanned through stories about Georgetown and Houston from the same era, as well.

Those types of teams simply don't exist anymore. It's sad. We can tinker with the age limit, but I don't think anything will change things back to the way they were.

Don't forget that the Bud Walton Arena seats 19,378 with 47 suites. Listed attendance for the Oklahoma game was 12,548 per the box score which is more than the official capacity of LNC although the record attendance is 13,241.

I'm positive that was the "tickets sold" and NOT the actual attendance. They were lucky if there were 7,000 butts in seats.
